Research Question:

This concept paper aims to determine the effects of online

games to the school performance of grade 11 Humanities and
Social Sciences students of Nuestra Señora de Guia in the School
Year 2019-2020 and seeks to answer the following questions:

1.) How much amount of time students spend playing online

games?

2.) Who influence them in playing online games?

3.) Can a student focus well on studying while being online

games player?

4.) What are the effects of playing online games on their

school performance?

5.) What would be a healthier option rather than playing

online game?
Background of the study:

Nowadays, online games are the most widespread way of

spending one's free time. Everyone is into online games
regardless of one's culture, age or gender. But seems like this
leisure activity becomes an addiction to everyone, that it is
not a leisure activity anymore but a priority activity that they
have to do every day or every time they feel the need to do it.
As a student, we see it every day from our seatmate, classmate,
schoolmate or friends. They've become so devoted to online games
that it ruins their focus on their studies and results to poor
academic performance. Because instead of studying or reviewing
their notes they spend their free time playing online games. On
worse case, some even pave a way to escape and to do it even the
teacher is discussing in front. Whether all of these are just
merely habit or an addiction. We recognize this problem and as
concern fellow students, we want to conduct this study to
resolve the said problems and help them to avoid or become free
to online addiction and regain their belief and give value on
the importance of education.
Preliminary Literature Review:

Stated by Hassan, there is good and bad impact that you can
get while playing online games. Good for those who know on how
to limit their time in playing games and know how to manage
their time. Bad for those students who are attached themselves
seating for a long time playing online games. We all know
nowadays students spend their vacant time in playing online
games instead of advancing their studies that will affect their
study habits.
In study of Daria J Kuss, she declared that online games
became popular, while studies of internet gaming addiction
emerged, outlining the negative consequences of excessive
gaming, its prevalence, and associated risk factors. The cited
neuroimaging studies indicate that internet gaming addiction
shares similarities with other addiction, including substance
dependence, at the molecular, neurocircuitry, and behavioral
levels. It emphasizes the necessity of an in-depth understanding
of the meaning, context and practices associated with gaming.
For most children, young people or even adults playing
online games is a fun way for them to spend time with friends
and create opportunities to develop teamwork and skills. But it
may interfere with school works and a person’s relationship with
his/her family and friends. Many teenagers spend more than hours
before they’re going to bed. The result is they going to school
late and exhausted, the worst is poor academic performances,
failure to submit school requirements on time and failing
grades. They experience sleepy most of the time or during class
hours and have a short span of interest in learning their
subject. A game is a game but too much of it will ruin you as a
person. We are part of millennial generation who need to protect
our serves as a youth.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study:

The scope of this study covers the effects of online

games, and the selected participants are the senior high school
grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences students of Nuestra
Señora de Guia Academy. This study aims to find out the effects
of online games to students' school performance. The researchers
are conducting the study during the Second Semester of the
School year 2019-2020 inside the school premises.
The researchers are conducting the study because their
purpose is to thoroughly understand the bad and good effect of
online games for the students, and the difference of addiction
from habit. To help them to be free from online games and its
bad consequence to their school performance and to recommend
ways that are healthier that will make them productive rather
than distracted.
The researchers are getting information and data through
semi-structured interview to the selected participants to know
their different perception and reason about online games, and to
make the interview organized yet able to explore and define more
areas.
Recommendation:

From the findings and conclusions the following

recommendations were drawn and suggested:

1.) The students must wisely spend their time and know their
limitation in playing online games
2.) The students should have self-control for them to
prevent being addicted in playing online games.
3.) The students must already complete all their school
works before playing online games.
4.) The school should implement a program, a strict rule, or
any activity that will open the student's eyes about the effects
of gaming addiction.
5.) The parents should check and guide their children
behavior on how long then spend their time playing online games.
