A noun is:______________________________________________________
Nouns are the same in Spanish. What are some Spanish NOUNS (in Spanish
they are called sustantivos) that you have learned?
We are going to talk about differences between Spanish and English nouns. In
Spanish, all nouns have gender. What does the word gender mean to you?
All Spanish nouns are either masculine or feminine. This doesn’t mean that
Spanish speakers think that a chalkboard (la pizarra) is a girl, or that a pencil (el
lapiz) is a boy. It’s just a difference between Spanish and English that you have
to learn.
The gender of the noun is determined by the ARTICLE (el, la). Therefore,
el lapiz_______________________________
la regla______________________________
la ventana____________________________
la puerta_____________________________
el escritorio___________________________
Circle the correct word that goes with each Spanish noun:
el la pizarra
el la manzana
el la muchacha
el la muchacho
el la brazo
el la escuela
el la pierna
el la boca
Making Nouns Plural:
To make a singular noun plural, follow these rules:
Make the following nouns plural (don’t forget to change the article):

la nariz______________________________
la ventana____________________________
la puerta_____________________________
el hospital___________________________

Apuntes (Notes): Los Adjectivos (Adjectives)
An adjective is:____________________________________________________
Adjectives must match the nouns they modify in gender (masculine/feminine) and
number (singular/plural).
Take the adjective rojo (red). There are four ways to write rojo:
The adjectives must match the nouns they modify. Most adjectives COME
AFTER THE NOUNS THEY MODIFY!
EJEMPLO:
el perro rojo the red dog los perros rojos the red dogs
la casa roja the red house las casas rojas the red houses
To make adjectives plural, follow the same rules you followed for making nouns
plural.
If adjectives end in a letter other than o or a, you don’t have to match the gender.
They still must match in number (singular or plural)
