Apuntes (Notes): Los Sustantivos (Nouns)

What is a noun in English?

A noun is:______________________________________________________

Nouns are the same in Spanish. What are some Spanish NOUNS (in Spanish
they are called sustantivos) that you have learned?

We are going to talk about differences between Spanish and English nouns. In
Spanish, all nouns have gender. What does the word gender mean to you?

All Spanish nouns are either masculine or feminine. This doesn’t mean that
Spanish speakers think that a chalkboard (la pizarra) is a girl, or that a pencil (el
lapiz) is a boy. It’s just a difference between Spanish and English that you have
to learn.

All Spanish nouns come with the word el or la.

El means that the word is masculine.

La means that the word is feminine.

Both el and la mean ________________ in English.

Most feminine nouns end in A: la pizarra la pluma la ventana

Most masculine nouns end in O: el boligrafo el perro el churro

¡OJO! Look out! There are some exceptions to this rule:

la mano el agua el problema

The gender of the noun is determined by the ARTICLE (el, la). Therefore,

la mano is feminine, while el agua & el problema are masculine nouns.

Making Nouns Plural:

EL changes to LOS LA changes to LAS

 If a NOUN ends in a VOWEL, add “s”

 el perro los perros
 la vaca las vacas

 If a NOUN ends in Z, change the Z to C and add –es

 el lapiz los lápices

 la nariz las narices

 If a NOUN ends in a CONSONANT, add “es”

el sillón los sillones

Apuntes (Notes): Los Adjectivos (Adjectives)

What is a adjective in English?

An adjective is:____________________________________________________

Adjectives do the same thing in Spanish. Write down 10 Spanish ADJETIVES

that you have learned.

Adjectives must match the nouns they modify in gender (masculine/feminine) and
number (singular/plural).

Take the adjective rojo (red). There are four ways to write rojo:

rojo (masculine, singular) rojos (masculine, plural)

roja (feminine, singular) rojas (feminine, plural)

The adjectives must match the nouns they modify. Most adjectives COME
AFTER THE NOUNS THEY MODIFY!

EJEMPLO:
el perro rojo the red dog los perros rojos the red dogs
la casa roja the red house las casas rojas the red houses

To make adjectives plural, follow the same rules you followed for making nouns
plural.

If adjectives end in a letter other than o or a, you don’t have to match the gender.
They still must match in number (singular or plural)

Ejemplo:

el perro grande los perros grandes

la casa grande las casas grandes
