Output core log
Program summary:

Displays or prints the lithological core log information contained in the current RGLDIP working directory, at
user-specified vertical scale. Long logs can be displayed in sections, the section-length can be changed
according to available resources. Other options include:

1. Vertical scale.

2. Print to the currently selected Windows printer.

3. Save the log as an enhanced metafile.

4. Save the log as a device independent bitmap.

Files used:

1. Borehole information file CORE.INI.

2. Core log data file CORLOG.

Files created:

1. Enhanced metafile CORELOG.EMF.

2. Device independent bitmap CORELOG.DIB.

1
Running the output core log program
On execution of the program the current RGLDIP working directory is shown in the program window:

Program commands are accessed from either the toolbar or the File, Commands, Styles and Help menus:

When disabled the command text in the menu and the corresponding icon on the toolbar are greyed. The
Section length command, on the Styles menu, is available at this stage. Select it to get the Section length
dialog box, where the required value can be entered:

2
Select the Select working directory command, , to change the working directory if necessary. This
displays the dialog box where the working directory can be selected:

Select the Select plotting options command, , to get to the dialog box where these options can be set:

Log depths. These are displayed in m or ft according to sonde type, and are initially the start and finish depths
of the interval correlated. Edit them as necessary to plot only a section of this data.

Vertical scale. This should be selected as an integer value in the range 4 thru 500.

Screen display. Creation of the screen display bitmap is time consuming for long logs, Print preview (File
menu) provides a sort of page by page browsing of the log. Deselect this option to inhibit the screen display.

The dialog box is closed by selecting O.K. to retain your selection of options, or Cancel to abort your selection
of options. If the dialog box was closed with OK an ‘Are you sure this is O.K.?’ message box appears:

Select Yes to carry on with the program according to selected options, No to go back to the commands menu
aborting the selected options, or Cancel to go back to the commands menu retaining the selected options. If the
screen display remains selected, it is displayed in the program window:

3
If the log length selected for processing is longer than the current section length, the lowest section of the log
is displayed first. In this case the Up50m command, , becomes available. Select it to move up the log
and display the next section, at which stage the Down50m command, , also becomes available.

Use the Print preview and Print commands to perform standard Windows printing (see
below). Print setup is available from the Files menu. The Save image in metafile and Save image in
bitmap commands are also available (see below). Use the Info command to get a summary of
borehole and log information

4
This is for information only, nothing can be edited here. Close the box with OK. The exit command
can be used at any stage to terminate the Output core log program and return to the main RGLDIP menu.

Printing
Selection of the Print preview or Print commands lead to the Printer plotting options dialog
box:

This provides 3 built-in depth range for plotting options and a 4 th user-defined option. Select the radio button
corresponding to the required selection. If the user-defined option is selected be sure to enter a start and finish
depth. Other options are:

1. Plot header frame. Header information is normally printed at the top of the 1 st page of the log. Deselect this
option to suppress this.

2. Page numbers in place of date. The current date is normally printed lower-right on each page of the log.
Select this option to replace this with page numbers. If this option is selected the Set page numbering dialog
box appears when this box is closed with OK:

Standard Windows printing is implemented when the dialog box is closed with OK. Print setup is available
from the Files menu.

5
Saving the log in an enhanced metafile
If a file with the standard metafile name, CORELOG.EMF, already exists in the current RGLDIP working
directory when the Save image in metafile command is selected, a dialog box appears:

Drop down the box to get a list of all files in this directory with the .EMF extension. Either select an existing
metafile name and edit it, or enter a new metafile name. Retain the .EMF extension.

The Metafile/Bitmap plotting options dialog box provides 3 built-in depth range for plotting options and a 4 th
user-defined option:

Select the radio button corresponding to the required selection. If the user-defined option is selected be sure to
enter a start and finish depth. When the metafile has been created there is an option to view the image it
contains:

If selected, the standard screen display is replaced by the image drawn from the metafile. The Remove the
displayed metafile image command, , becomes available. Use it to restore the standard screen display.

6
Saving the log in a device independent bitmap
If a file with the standard bitmap name, CORELOG.DIB, already exists in the current RGLDIP working
directory when the Save image in bitmap command, , is selected, a dialog box appears:

Drop down the box to get a list of all files in this directory with the .DIB extension. Either select an existing
metafile name and edit it, or enter a new metafile name. Retain the .DIB extension.

The Metafile/Bitmap plotting options dialog box provides 3 built-in depth range for plotting options and a 4 th
user-defined option:

Select the radio button corresponding to the required selection. If the user-defined option is selected be sure to
enter a start and finish depth.

Error messages
A variety of error-messages may appear. Fatal errors are shown in message-boxes with either an Exclamation
or a Stop icon:

Non-fatal errors are shown in message-boxes with a Question mark or Information icon:

Those with a question mark require a YES/NO user-response (the incorrect response may be fatal), those with
an information icon usually result from an illegal input by the user - close the message-box with OK and the
program takes you back to the stage where you can input a valid value or response.

Errors fall into 2 groups:

1. FILE HANDLING. The program uses:

Standard RGLDIP files contained in directory \RGLDIP. Possible error messages are:

a. "ss10font.dat file not found in \RGLDIP" or "failed to read ss10font.dat file" - this file has been deleted
or become unreadable. Reinstall it from the distribution CD by selecting a custom installation, then select the
RGLDIP files group.

b. "color file not found in \RGLDIP" or "failed to read colorfile" - file btvcolor has been deleted or become
unreadable. Reinstall it from the distribution CD by selecting a custom installation, then select the RGLDIP
files group.

c. "lith.dat file not found in \RGLDIP" or "failed to read lith.dat file" - this file has been deleted or become
unreadable. Reinstall it from the distribution CD by selecting a custom installation, then select the RGLDIP
files group.

d. "failed to set the working directory" - this means that the default RGLDIP working directory,
\RGLDIP\WELL\DATA has been deleted. Recreate it by selecting the Create new RGLDIP working directory
option on the Core Processing page of the main RGLDIP menu and entering the name Data.

Data files for individual logging runs in working directories off \RGLDIP\WELL. Possible error messages are:

a. " file CORE.ini not found " - This file has not been located where it should be (in the current working
directory). Repeat the Input core log program to recreate it.b. "Failed to create screen bitmap arrays" - this
message indicates that some file operation to do with creation of the screen display bitmap has resulted in an
untrapped error.

8
2. MEMORY MANAGEMENT.

The length of log that can be displayed on the screen depends of the amount of memory available on the local
system. Any of the following error messages, or a blank screen appearing where you were expecting a log to
appear, mean that the currently selected section-length should be reduced:

“Out of memory”

"Insufficient memory to store screen bitmap arrays"

"hBitmap: CreateBitmap failed"

"hmDC: CreateCompatibleDC failed"

"hPrevBitmap: SelectObject failed"

"hmDC: BitBlt failed"

Optimum section length should be established by trial and error for the local system.
