Some people learn a second language easily. How can you help yourself learn a new
language, such as English? There are several ways to make learning English a little easier and
more interesting.
The first step is to feel positive about learning English. If you believe that you can learn,
you will learn. Be patient. You do not have to understand everything all at once. It is natural to
make mistakes when you learn something new. We can learn from our mistakes. In other words,
do not worry about taking risks.
The second step is to practice your English. By writing in a diary every day, you will get
used to write and express your ideas in English. In addition, you must speak English every day.
You will all make mistakes, but gradually you will become comfortable communicating in
English.
The third step is to keep a record of your language learning. Perhaps the lesson was
difficult, but you tried to understand it. Write these accomplishments in your journal. You will
enjoy learning English, and you will feel more confidence in yourself.
Tsunami is a Japanese word meaning harbour wave. Tsunamis are sometimes called tidal wave
s, because the initial change in water level resembles that of a rising or falling tide, but they are cre
ated in an entirely different way.
Tsunamis share many characteristics with the waves you’ve encountered at the beach. But it is
how they differ from the surf you splash in that makes them much more dangerous, very unpredict
able, and often deadly.
Tsunamis are ripples that form on the ocean surface above where the seafloor is abruptly disturb
ed, displacing the water above it. Sometimes they consist of single waves, but very often a sequen
ce of waves is created. Anything that causes a seafloor disturbance can produce a tsunami. Earthqu
akes, volcanic explosions, undersea landslides and meteor impacts are common causes.
The biggest tsunamis are created when powerful earthquakes happen at shallow depths below th
e seafloor (most often at plate subduction zones), because such earthquakes produce large seafloor
displacements and vibrations over large areas. The destructive tsunamis that struck Indonesia in 20
04 and Japan in 2011 were caused in this way.
