Objective:

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

 Explain critical reading as looking for ways of thinking;


 To identify claim of fact, policy, and value explicitly or implicitly made in a written text; and
 To write a 1000-word critique of a selected text on the basis of its claim, context and properties
as a written material.

Warm-up

By now, you are beginning to form an understanding of critical reading. But before we go on to
its definition, try to list five personal traits which you think a critical reader should embody.

DEFINING CRITICAL READING

1. Critical reading- Bringing your own experience and perspective to reading


2. Journaling, annotating, outlining, summarizing, questioning- Critical reading skills
3. Keeping a reading journal- Write feelings and reactions to text, connecting to personal
experiences
4. Annotating text- Writing notes, highlighting, underlining on your copy of the text
5. Outlining text- Helps you see the structure of the text and connections between points
6. Summarizing plot- Writing main ideas and important supporting details in paragraph form
7. Questioning text- Ask questions about topics that you disagree with or don't understand
8. Explicit claims- Straightforward and directly stated claims
Applying Critical reading strategies

To show how some critical reading strategies are used, let us first read the following expert from
the presidential address of Manuel L. Quezon delivered to students and teachers on August 19, 1938:
