Week 3

This week we will start the side pattern. We will crochet 11 rounds.

The side pattern for the oval bag is a bit shorter than the side pattern for the round
bag. This makes the proportions better for the oval bag.

The pattern of the bottom does not continue in the side for the oval bag. It can even
be a bit confusing when you make the first round, because the stitches of the side
won’t always line up the same way with the stitches of the bottom. It is best not to
look at the bottom when you start with the side.

Before we start the side, we have to crochet a few stitches to change the starting
position of the round. See the highlighted part below.

Part 1 of the side

Watch this video before you start the side. youtu.be/1BWk9xq3KCE

Because this pattern has color changes in the first round, it will be a bit harder to get
a crisp line between the bottom and the side, but as you can see in the picture below
it is possible.
Put your work on a flat surface after 10 stitches and before every color change. Push
the work in a 90 degrees angle and pull the yarns. Make sure you hold the last stitch
you made with a color when you pull that yarn. You don’t want to pull that stitch
smaller.
With an oval bag, the round parts will go up when you do the first round of the side,
but it will take a few rounds for the long sides to go up.

Written instructions

Before we start with round 1 of the side, we have to crochet a few stitches to change
the starting position of the round.

To change the start point of the round crochet, 4D, 8E. After these stitches you will
start with the side pattern.

1. * 6E, 4D, 5A, 4C, 2B, 2A, 2B, 4C, 5A, 4D, 6E * [5x], 6E, 4D, 5A, 4C, 2B, 2A, 2B,

After the first 2

rounds of the side,
the transition from
bottom to the side
will look like this.
As you can see
the pattern does
not continue.

Working with the graph

Before we start with round 1 of the side, we have to crochet a few stitches to change
the starting position of the round.

To change the start point of the round crochet, 4D, 8E. After these stitches you will
start with the side pattern.

How to read the graph

The graph on page 16 is rotated 90 degrees. I did this so the graph is as big as
possible. We want to able to
count the stitches, right?

Here you see the graph in

the right position.

You read the graph from right to left.

When you are left handed, please also read the graph from right to left. If you would
read the graph from left to right the jog will not look good.

Start crocheting at the bottom right of the graph, see the red arrow. Repeat the right
part of the graph 5 times. End the round with the left part of the graph.
