Contributing Designers
Nuts about Squares is a blanket with 35 lovely squares designed by 11 talented
crochet designers. Some of them are well known and admired for their fabulous
designs, others are perhaps less known. Contributing designers are Dedri
Uys, Helen Shrimpton, Polly Plum, Sigrun Hugoey, Melissa Green, Heather
Gibbs, Julie Yeager, Margaret MacInnis, Susan Stevens/Mellie Blossom, Aurora
Suominen, and Tatsiana Kupryianchyk. Each square has been carefully selected to
ensure that the squares work together well in their look and feel.
Size
The squares used in Nuts about Squares are all originally designed for worsted
weight yarn with a 5.0mm or 5.5mm hook and measure 12 inches. However, I have
used Double Knit, Sport weight and Fingering weight yarn to have smaller sized
blankets. The final sizes of the blankets are approximately

 Sea – Color Crafter (Double Knit) with 4.0/4.5mm hook – 130cm x 180cm
 Earth – Stone Washed (Sport) with 3.5/4.0mm hook – 115cm x 160cm
 Sky – Sunkissed (Fingering) with 3.0/3.5mm hook – 100cm x 140cm
Gauge
As such gauge is not critical in this project. What is important is that all your
squares are the same size. For each square the recommended hook size will be
given which should help you to get a consistent size between all your squares.

The yarn amounts and blanket sizes are estimated on squares which have the
following dimensions:

 Color Crafter – 25cm (10in)

 Stone Washed – 22cm (9in)
 Sunkissed – 20cm (7.5in)
If your squares are larger, that is not a problem for the final blanket. It can
however imply that you could run out of yarn, even though there is some extra
yarn in the kits.
Difficulty
In my opinion this project can be classified as intermediate, or suitable for the
adventurous beginner. I hope that the detailed video tutorials help to make the
project suitable for beginners also.

Materials
To make a Nuts about Squares blanket you need yarn in 6 colors and 2 crochet
hook sizes. There are 3 kits available that contain 6 colors which I have labeled
colors A to F. I refer to these color labels during the entire CAL when specifying
colorways for each square.

You need 2 hook sizes to make the blanket. You need a 3.5mm (US E/4) and 4.0mm
(US G/6) hook to make the Nuts about the Earth blanket, a 4.0mm (US
G/6) and 4.5mm (US 7) hook to make the Nuts about the Sea blanket, and a 3.0mm
(US D/3) and 3.5mm (US E/4) hook to make the Nuts about the Sky blanket.
More details about the yarn in the kits as well as tips for making your own
colorway you can find HERE.

Use the following hook sizes to make your squares or the hook size you need to get
the correct size:

 Color Crafter – 4.0mm

 Stone Washed – 3.5mm
 Sunkissed – 3.0mm
Update: I see that there are some (not all) ladies whose squares for week 4 turn
out smaller. You can do several things; you can go up a hook size by 0.5mm or
work dc/tr in round 10 or both. The size of your square is determined by the size
of the circles you make. If they are on the small side, your total square will be small
also.

Work Rounds 1 to 9 according to the written pattern or video tutorial using

the colorway for week 4 given above. A small tip for Round 5, I replaced the ch3
stitches with ch2 stitches because I found that my work bobbled less. I also show
this tip in the video tutorial. Work 3 squares in total.
Work an extra round to bring the final stitch count to 44 stitches per side.Round
10 using color A, attach yarn with a standing hdc or ch2 in any ch2-corner space,
ch2, and 1hdc in same corner space. This is your new corner made. *Skip first st,

Use the following hook sizes to make your squares or the hook size you need to get
the correct size (Note that this is 0.5mm larger than what you have used up till now):

 Color Crafter – 4.5mm

 Stone Washed – 4.0mm
 Sunkissed – 3.5mm
Update: When testing my testers and I found that Rachel turned out smaller than our
other squares and we needed to go up a hook size to get all the squares the same size.
However, I notice that some of your squares turn out too large if you go up a hook
size. If you suspect that your tension is such that you may end up with a too large
square, then don’t go up a hook size. If your square then does happen to be smaller,
make Round 15 with dc or tr instead of hdc.

Work Rounds 1 to 14 according to the written pattern or video tutorial using

the colorway for week 5 given above. Work 3 squares in total.
A small tip for round 9: I replaced the tr with a bptr to catch the 3rd dc of the flower
petals along the straight edge. This way the petals are secured to the square. The
flower petals in the corners remain unconnected. In the video I show how to do this.
I believe there is an small error in the pattern for the stitch count of round 14. I had
41 stitches at the end of round 14. Work an extra round to bring the final stitch count
to 44 stitches per side.Round 15 using color A, attach yarn with a standing hdc or ch2
in the hdc making the corner from Round 14, 1hdc in same stitch, ch2, and 2hdc in
same stitch. This is your new corner made. *Skip first st, 1hdc on each of the next 40
st, (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in next corner-hdc. Repeat from * 3 more times, omitting the last
corner on the final repeat. Join to the first st with a ss. [44 hdc per side]
Repeat Round 15 for all 3 squares. Round 15 is also shown in THIS VIDEO. Block your
squares to the following sizes:
 Color Crafter – 25cm (10in)
 Stone Washed – 22cm (9in)
 Sunkissed – 20cm (7.5in)
My squares bobbled quite a bit, so I really recommend blocking this square.

 Sunkissed – 3.0mm
Work Rounds 1 to 10 according to the written pattern or video tutorial using
the colorway for week 6 given above. Work 3 squares in total.

 Color Crafter – 4.5mm

 Stone Washed – 4.0mm
 Sunkissed – 3.5mm
My testers and I found that this square turned out smaller than our other squares,
going up a hook size fixed it for us.

Work Rounds 1 to 13 according to the written pattern or video tutorial using

the colorway for week 7 given above. Work 3 squares in total.
At this point you have 35 stitches per side counting between the center sc stitches.
Work an extra round to bring the final stitch count to 44 stitches per side. Round

Cat’s Claw by Margaret McInnes

Use the following hook sizes to make your Cat’s Claw squares or the hook size you
need to get the correct size:

 Color Crafter – 4.0mm

 Stone Washed – 3.5mm
 Sunkissed – 3.0mm
Note: It could happen that your Cat’s Claw square turns out smaller because of the
way the long front post stitches pull the square inwards. If this happens, feel free to go
up a hook size.
Work Rounds 1 to 11 of Cat’s Claw according to the written pattern or video
tutorial using the colorway for week 8 given above. Work 2 squares in total.
At this point you have 37 stitches per side counting between the center corner
stitches. Work an extra round to bring the final stitch count to 44 stitches per
side.Round 12 using color A, attach yarn with a standing hdc or ch2 in any corner st,
1hdc in same st, ch2, and 2hdc in same corner st. This is your new corner made. *skip
first st, 2hdc in next st, 1hdc in next st, 2hdc in next st, 1hdc in next 29 st, 2hdc in next
st, 1hdc in next st, 2hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st, (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in next corner st.
Repeat from * 3 more times, omitting the last corner on the final repeat. Join to the
first st with a ss. [44 hdc per side]
Repeat Round 12 for the second square. Round 12 is also shown in THIS VIDEO.
Tropical Delight by Susan Stevens
Use the following hook sizes to make your Tropical Delight square or the hook size
you need to get the correct size:

 Color Crafter – 4.5mm

 Stone Washed – 4.0mm
 Sunkissed – 3.5mm
This is 0.5mm larger than the hook size you used for week 1. We found during testing
that Tropical Delight turns out a bit smaller, going up a hook size fixed it for my
testers.

Work Rounds 1 to 14 of Tropical Delight according to the written pattern or video

tutorial using the colorway for week 8 given above. Work only 1 square!
At this point you have 37 stitches per side counting between the center corner
stitches. Work an extra round to bring the final stitch count to 44 stitches per
side.Round 15 using color A, repeat Round 12 of Cat’s Claw but work in a ch-2 corner
space and not a corner stitch. [44 hdc per side]
Block all your squares to the following sizes:

 Color Crafter – 25cm (10in)

 Stone Washed – 22cm (9in)
 Sunkissed – 20cm (7.5in)
Just a note, if Tropical Delight is not your cup of tea, feel free to make 3 Cat’s Claw
squares. You can choose your own color placement if you decide to make 3 Cat’s Claw
squares.

Use the following hook sizes to make your squares, or use the hook size you need to
get the correct size:

 Color Crafter – 4.0mm (3.5mm for round 3)

 Stone Washed – 3.5mm (3mm for round 3)
 Sunkissed – 3.0mm (2.5mm for round 3)
Work Rounds 1 to 14 of In Like a Lamb, Out Like a Lion according to the written
pattern or video tutorial using the colorway for week 11 given above. Make 3 squares.
I used (2dc, 1tr, 2dc) in the last round of the pattern. The extra round, Round 15, is
also based on the way I made Round 14. If you do a different stitch and corner, adapt
Round 15 as needed.

At this point you have 37 stitches per side counting between the tr corner stitches.
Work an extra round to bring the final stitch count to 44 stitches per side.Round

Layout & colorway

The colorway for joining Nuts about Squares is simple, join your blanket using Color
A. The table below gives a suggestion for how you could arrange your squares.
However, if you want it totally different, please do so. It is your blanket!
Instructions Nuts about
Squares week 13 & 14

Use the following hook size to join your squares, or go up 0.5mm from the hook size
that you have been using the most during the CAL:

 Color Crafter – 4.5mm

 Stone Washed – 4.0mm
 Sunkissed – 3.5mm
I advise to go up a hook size because it will help prevent the slip stitch join from being
too tight and rippling. You want your join to be smooth and have a bit of elasticity to
easy use and comfort of the blanket.

Arrange the squares according to the layout given above or use your own layout. The
joining of the squares is done in continuous rows, square by square until an entire
row is finished. Very important: do not cut your yarn after 2 squares are joined but
only cut your yarn when you reach the end of a row. First join all the horizontal rows
of the blanket and only then join the vertical rows.

Joining is done from right to left for right handed people or left to right for left handed
people. One thing that is VERY important, make sure that your squares don’t twist on
themselves, particularly when you have only one or two rows joined. You will be so
mad at yourself if that happens.

Maybe when you read the description of the join you feel a bit lost. I show you how to
join the blanket in THIS VIDEO, maybe that helps you visualize the joining process.
Horizontal join
With Color A make a slip knot on your hook and align the first two squares that need
to be joined with their right sides facing upwards, in other words, with their back
sides facing each other. Make a slip stitch through the ch2-corner space of both
squares, making sure that your yarn is BELOW your work between the squares. You
will be joining the squares by catching one loop at a time on each of the two squares
directly opposite each other. These are the two most inner loops of the squares as
they lay next to one another.
Insert your hook from front to back in the inner loop of the first stitch. Then insert the
hook in the inner loop (also from front to back) of the first stitch of the opposite
square and pull your yarn through all loops on your hook to complete the slip stitch.
Continue to the next stitch and join in the same way till you have joined all 44 stitches.

When you reach the end of the first two squares, make a slip stitch through the ch2-
corners of both squares. DO NOT CUT your yarn, but continue on to the next two
squares.

Align the next two squares that are to be joined adjacent to the first two. Pay extra
attention that you have the squares in the correct order. You will be amazed at how
easy it is to get your squares connected in mirror image.

Continue by making a slip stitch through the ch2-corners of the next two squares and
then join each each of the 44 stitches with a slip stitch in exactly the same way as the
previous square. Continue till all the squares in one row are joined. Now you can cut
your yarn.

Continue like this for all the horizontal lines in the blanket. Be careful to ensure your
previously joined squares are NOT TWISTED when you move from one row to the
next.

Vertical join
Use the same method when joining the vertical joins in the blanket.

A tip: although this is not strictly necessary, I find that my joins are more flexible
when I do the following when I reach a crossing. Work a sc through the ch2-corner
spaces of the two squares currently at, ch1 to cover the slip stitches from the
horizontal join, sc through the ch2-corner of the next two squares. I find that by doing
a sc instead of a ss as well as the extra ch1 that the join is more natural looking and
does not pull in on itself.

Tutorial to help
Dedri Uys from Look at what I made has a photo tutorial showing how to make the flat
zipper join we are using to join our blanket. If the video is not your thing, check out
her tutorial!
Yarn tails & finishing
I left my yarn tails from the joins till I had the border completed because it gives more
options for working them away. You can leave blocking your blanket till you have
finished the entire blanket.

Color chart
The colors for each row are given in the Color Chart Week 15 for each of the three
colorways or you can follow the general colorway in the table below.

The yarn amounts are given per round so you can estimate if you have enough yarn of
a certain color to make that round. You should have ample color B left from your kit to
use as a backup color.

Feel free to alternate and change your color placement for the border to best match
the yarn colors you still have available. The border looks best if Round 3 and Round 6
are in the same color.

Squares week 15

Use the following hook sizes to make make your border, or the hook size that you
have been using the most during the project:

 Color Crafter – 4.0mm

 Stone Washed – 3.5mm
 Sunkissed – 3.0mm
Work Rounds 1 to 10 of the border according to the written pattern or video
tutorial using the colorway given above. Work away your yarn tails and block your
blanket for the best final finish.
If you have a different number of squares than the 5×7 squares used for Nuts about
Squares, you will have to adapt your stitch count to get the border to work. At the end
of Round 1 you need (multiple of 4 plus 1) stitches on all sides of your blanket. For
example for Nuts about squares you have 4×83+1=333 stitches on the long side and
4×59+1=237 stitches on the short side after Round 1. Adapt your stitch count for
Round 1 by adding extra stitches in the joins or corners as needed.

The cushion consists of a square fabric that is rotated diagonally over the cushion
cover and then closed. Work each round with a new color, alternating colors in
random order. Start each round with a standing stitch and close each round with an
invisible join. Is you feel that your work pulls inwards too much, feel free to replace
the fptr with fpdtr.

Round 1
With a slip knot on your hook, ch4 and close with a ss in the first ch to form a ring.
ch3 (counts as 1dc), 1dc in the ring, ch2. *3dc, ch2 in the ring; repeat from * two more
times, 1dc in the ring. Close on first st and fasten off.
Round 2

Round 8
Start in any ch2-corner space. *(1sc, ch2, 1sc) in ch2-corner space, 1sc in next 2
sts, 1fpdc in next st, repeat [1sc in next 2 sts, 1fptr around front post stitch from two
rounds down, skip stitch behind fptr] till there are 5 sts left, 1sc in next 2 sts, 1fpdc in
next st, 1sc in last 2 sts; repeat from * 3 more times. Close on first st and fasten off.
After Round 8 your work will look something like this.
Round 9 and further
Repeat Rounds 7 and 8 till the fabric is 70cm square. Work away all yarn tails before
continuing.

Assembling & finishing the

cushion
When the fabric is about 70cm square do the following to finish your cushion.

1. Attach the first button in the center of the square where you started Round 1.
2. With the back side facing, fold two corners of the square inward and align them
with the center of the square. Work 1sc through the 2 adjacent ch2-corner spaces.
Join the two edges of the square by working 1sc through adjacent stitches till you
reach the new corner. There will be one stitch left exactly on the corner. Leave this
stitch unworked. Fasten off and work away your yarn tails.
3. Fold the next corner inward and repeat step 2 for the join.
4. Place the cushion inner in the pocket created.
5. Fold the last corner inward and repeat step 2 for the join.
6. Attach the second button in the center of the cushion where the 4 corners meet.
7. Work away the last yarn tails.
