Sunny Blanket

Introduction

It all started with a Sunny Border pattern, which

was aimed to enlarge Sunny Mandala and turn it
into a square. Laura Jackson (aka @taemombo
on Ravelry and Instagram) was helping me with
testing. But because Laura is always taking tests
creatively and passionate, she decided to turn
her Sunny Border into a blanket by adding small
squares and Dandelion border around.

Laura’s project became very popular. And

although she posted general notes about how to
put all three patterns together on her Ravelry
project page, my inbox was still getting full with
messages asking for a complete tutorial on how
to make this blanket. And finally here it is!

Yarn:
Laura Jackson, Hilde Tindlund, Nina Mayer,
Chuck and I have recreated Sunny blanket in
several colorways to show you different
variations. You can choose one of them or
maybe get inspired and pick your own colors
based on our small collection. One of the
colorways (Moody Sun) was created by Chuck
who kindly allowed us to use his pictures.
Each colorway was recreated with Scheepjes
Stone Washed and Scheepjes Colour Crafter
yarns. We have tried to choose similar colors so
that both versions look almost the same.

your style of crochet and you might need more yarn to complete the blanket):

C1 – 813 Amazonite x 6 balls

Pattern Notes

1. Sunny Mandala
Complete Sunny Mandala using 4mm hook. Order of colors is as per pattern.
Mandala’s size after blocking is approx. 45cm/17.5”

2. Sunny Border
Complete Sunny Border using 4mm hook. Block Sunny Border to 90cm/35.5” square.
Order of colors is as per pattern except of Evening Sun colorway. Here you will have a
few changes:

3. Small Squares
Make 20 small squares using 4mm hook. Order of colors will be different for all
colorways (see table on page 4).

ch5-sp – 27 sts on each side, ch2-sp in each
Rounds 1-12: Repeat rounds 1-12 from Sunny corner
Mandala with the same order of colors as per
Round 16: Continue with same yarn.

Round 14: Attach new yarn in third sc (BL) of
any group of 3 sc. Work in BL.
*4sc (first sc of the rnd will be ch1), inc*
around (16 times), NJ in the first sc of the rnd
after the ch1 – 96 sts
Round 15: Attach new yarn in second st of any
inc above FPtr2tog. Work through both lps.
Ch5 (counts as first tr and ch2-sp), 2tr in same
st, 2tr, 3dc, 3hdc, 7sc, 3hdc, 3dc, 1tr in each of
next 3 sts, *(tr, ch2, 2tr) in same st as last tr,
2tr, 3dc, 3hdc, 7sc, 3hdc, 3dc, 1tr in each of
next 3 sts* 3 times making last tr in same st
were yarn was attached, join with a ss in first
Round 17: Continue with same yarn.
Ch2 (doesn’t count as a st), (2dc, ch2, 2dc in
same corner sp), dc in each st until the next
corner, *[2dc, ch2, 2dc] in next corner sp, dc
in each st until the next corner* 3 times, join
with ss in first dc. Fasten off – 35 dc each side,
ch2-sp in each corner
Block squares to 23cm/9”. Join blocked
squares around Sunny Border with 4 squares
along each side and one square in each
corner. Use flat zip joining method, or any
other method you prefer.

4. Dandelion Border
Dandelion Border is added around large piece with joined small squares. See table on
page 5 for placement of colors on every round. First 6 rounds are made as per
instructions below, and then Dandelion Border pattern is followed from Round 12.

Round 1: Attach yarn in ch2-sp in any
corner of large square. Work in BL.
Ch1 (doesn’t count as a st), *(2sc, ch1,
2sc) in ch2-sp in the corner, 1sc in every st
along the edge of large square making 1sc
in every ch2-sp of small squares and in
every seam* 4 times, NJ in second sc after
ch1 – 229 sc along each side, ch2-sp in
each corner
Round 2: Attach yarn in ch1-sp in any
corner. Work in BL.
Ch1 (doesn’t count as a st), *(1sc, ch1,
1sc) in ch1-sp in the corner, 1sc in every st
until next corner* 4 times, join with ss in
first sc, make one more ss in next ch2-sp –
231 sc along each side, ch2-sp in each
corner
Round 3: Continue with same yarn.
Repeat Round 2. Join round with ss in first
sc, fasten off – 233 sc along each side,
ch2-sp in each corner
Round 4: Attach new yarn in first sc (BL)
after any ch1-sp in the corner. Work in BL.
*2sc (first sc of the round will be a ch),
[1SPsc, 1sc] until 1 st left before next
corner, 1sc, (1sc, ch1, 1sc) in next ch2-sp
in the corner* 4 times, NJ in first sc of the
round after ch1 – 235 sts along each side,
ch1-sp in each corner
Round 5: Attach new yarn in first sc (BL)
after any ch1-sp in the corner. Work in BL.
*1sc in each st until next corner (first sc of
this rnd will be a ch), (1sc, ch1, 1sc) in ch1-
sp in the corner* 4 times, NJ in first sc of
the round after ch1 – 237 sts along each
side, ch1-sp in each corner
Round 6: Repeat Round 5 with new yarn –
339 sts along each side, ch1-sp in each
corner
Continue with Rounds 12-24 of Dandelion
Border pattern. On round 12 you will have
17 repeats – 241 sts along each side, ch1-
sp in each corner.
