January, February, March, April, May, June, July Using this song for teaching ‘The Calendar Song’ by Boney M. has to be the best song in the world for teaching your students the months of the year! The only words in the song are the months of the year; the words are clear and are accompanied by an exciting Tropicana beat! Your young ones will go mad for this song and will know all the months of the year, in the correct order, after only one class!
Print-out the flashcards with this plan, or use your
own month flashcards. Arrange your students in a circle with you in the middle. Put the flashcards out in a line and let the students listen to the song. As the months of the year are sung, you should point to the correct flashcard. Do this once or twice, so that the students become familiar with the song and can identify which flashcard is which. Now give a flashcard to each student in the circle. If you don’t have exactly twelve students, either Using this song for teaching give some students two flashcards or print-out extra flash cards and hand them out; it won’t ruin anything. Play the song again, but this time as students hear the month of the year, if they have that flashcard, they should quickly stand up and sit down again. The chant is really catchy and your students will probably start singing along. If they do, actively encourage this by singing and clapping yourself! Finally, play the song one last time and have your students stand up and join hands. You can now all sing together while you dance in a circle.
As a warm-down exercise, there is a jigsaw puzzle
at the end. Get the students into pairs and have them cut up the puzzle and put them back together. If you don’t trust them with scissors, you can pre-cut the puzzles before class. Enjoy!! Tip: Students can sometimes feel shy singing and dancing, but will always break out of this shyness if the teacher takes the lead. With young learners, always have energy and enthusiasm in abundance and your kids will respond big time!!
