this industrial visit was to let students know things practically through interaction, working
methods and employment practices. Moreover, it gives exposure from academic point of view.
Main aim of industrial visit is to provide an exposure to students about practical working
environment. They also provide students a good opportunity to gain full awareness about
industrial practices.
Management students of Amrita School of Business, Amritapuri with a group of 50 students
got an opportunity to visit one of the world largest lifts and elevators producing company
named as Schindler and also SAN Engineering and Locomotive Company Ltd accompanied
by faculty members Mr. Suresh Appukuttan (Asst. Professor, Department of Management,
School of Business, Amritapuri) and Mrs. Rajasree (Lab Assistant, Department of

Visit to SAN Engineering and Locomotive Company Ltd.

An industrial trip to SAN Engineering was organized on 25th January, 2020. San Engineering
and Locomotive Company Ltd is a 100 crore company established in 1969, erstwhile known
as Suri and Nayar. It is the only private company that manufactures locomotive mainly used
for power, cement and petroleum industries. While manufacturing these locomotives SAN
Engineering focuses on load strength rather than speed. SAN engineering also manufactures
automotive and fishnet. San Engineering has branches in Bangalore, Mysore, and Hyderabad
manufacturing locomotives, gear products, Ventra Locomotives respectively. They also have
their manufacturing units in Goa where they manufacture “Barges” (small ships used to
transport goods), SAN 2 seater Sports Car, and fish net in Gujarat. They also design specialized
vehicles for defence.
Students toured the manufacturing unit of locomotive engines that included diesel, electric,
hydraulic and flame proof locomotive and special purpose rail vehicles that had the horse
power ranging from 1600 HP to 2600 HP. The other section of the manufacturing unit had the
materials and spare parts which are used to build these engines.
SAN Engineering’s core competence lies in quality engineering and design. They have an ISO
9001 certification. It is the only Indian private sector manufacturer of diesel, electrical and
hydraulic locomotives.
After the introduction talk, we were taken to shop floor consisting of various units as well as
departments, such as manufacturing units, quality assurance, assembling units etc.
Manufacturing units manufacture turbo reversing transmissions, diesel hydraulic locomotives,
and diesel electric locomotives, power packs for a variety of applications, heavy duty cardan
shafts and gear boxes for varied industries. Transmission and the drive elements are
manufactured in-house using state-of the-art machining centres and gear profile grinders.
SAN manufacturing facilities were located in two plants and were equipped with advanced,
high precision CNC horizontal and CNC vertical machining centres. The in-house five axis
machines provide SAN with the advantage of producing bevel gears and motor parts of great
accuracy. The gear grinders are capable of manufacturing gears to very high standards. The
manufacturing unit is supported by the R&D division that leads the SAN development
program, a SOLID EDGE unit with advanced design capabilities, an integrated machine shop
and a metrology laboratory.
Quality was demonstrated of their commitment to quality by investing in state-of-the-art
facilities that conduct quality tests on SAN products. These include advanced measurement
systems for gears, state-of-the-art co-ordinate measuring machine, world-class metrology
laboratory for calibration of measuring instruments and material testing, non-contact and
nondestructive test facilities for material testing, and transmission test facility. They have
formed a quality team, a cross-functional group of domain experts. The team’s mandate is to
continually work on improving product performance based on customer feedback, application
studies, technological advances in the rail industry and lessons learnt.
The assembling of various parts to was well maintained and was clearly visible
that the parts were arranged in a manner that they would be able to transport quickly to make
the finished locomotive. Each part carried a number on it to create a quick recognition of the
product.
And finally there was a section for transportation of these hydraulic machines to the customers.
These machines are being transported through various huge trailers to their respective
customers.
I after visiting to manufacturing firms, found the realities of the shop floor, which in itself is a
rare exposure. By visiting the shop floor I get to understand the risky conditions in which
workers work, the
people management challenges involved in managing workers apart from getting hands-on
technical knowledge.

• Through industrial visit we got awareness about new technologies. Visiting different
Manufacturing outlets helped us to build a good relationship with the industry.
• We know building relationship with companies always will always help to gain a good
job in future. After visiting an industry gained a combined knowledge about both
theoretical and practical.
• The company person also appreciate us and visit seemed to be very informative and
gives us good learning experience.

And in the middle of the visits we had leisure times at Bangalore. Spent time at the streets of
jayanagar, commercial street etc. Bought items, had food etc. And also spent time at Garuda
Mall. Our stays were basically at the campuses of Bangalore and as well as Mysore. After all
it was a good experience and also gained a lot of knowledge about the companies and their
working environment.
Then we started our journey back to the college. From 23rd January to 26th January we all 48
students spent time in learning and getting to know thing together and also had leisure time
with fun and entertainment. This would always be kept as a memory.
