123D Jax Information sheet

Mission statement
123D Jax aims to teach kids basic CAD (computer aided design) skills, learn about 3d printing
with hands on experience, and create models of everyday objects in order to foster and create a
foundation for kids to gain interest and basic skills in engineering, digital design, and many more
other careers.
Location
 Pablo creek library - 13295 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32246
Age groups
 Students from grades 4 through 8
Requirements
 Students have mastered basic mathematical arithmetic (addition subtraction,
multiplication, and division).
 Students have mastered abstract thinking to be able to apply mathematics and logic to
real world applications.
 Students should have basic knowledge of a computer and are able to navigate through
one on their own.
Meeting days and times
 Every other Saturday
Software
 Students will use Autodesk Tinkercad to create CAD designs.
 Tinkercad is a basic browser software that is free to use and easily accessible. Tinkercad
is a beginner level modeling software that can be used to make a wide variety of objects
from very basic objects to very detailed objects.
 Tinkercad has 3 different programs within it 3d modeling for cad design, electronics for
making circuits, and finally code blocks to make code for electronic design. We will
primarily be using the 3d design program.
 Tinkercad can be accessed at www.tinkercad.com
 Students can be put into groups through the software to work together on a model.
 This is a beginner level course so we will use this simplified software as a primary
source.
Log in to Tinkercad
1. Go to the class link https://www.tinkercad.com/joinclass/IYI1564SJR8K
2. Type your nickname and go into the class. This will be like your own account but will be
part of the class. Models will be able to be saved on here and accessed on any other
computer.
3. You can also go to the website, click sign in, and the click join class and enter in the
Class code IYI1564SJR8K
Material
 Computers will be provided but students may bring their own laptop and mouse at their
own risk
 A notebook is recommended to sketch models and record measurements, but paper and
pencils will be provided
 Rulers will be provided
 A flash drive is optional to save models, else students will be able to save models to
Tinkercad.
 A 3d printer and 3d pen’s will be provided
 Calculators will be provided
 A projector will be used to teach lessons
Funding
 TBD, any funding will be used for filament and a couple 3d pens. 3d Filament will be
needed regularly for 3d printing.
Remind 101
 Remind is an app used to send notifications, files and messages to a class. You can either
download the app or text the code to join the class remind.
 Text @123dj to the number 81010
 You can also go to the following link if you have a remind account
https://www.remind.com/join/123dj
 Remind also allows you to send direct messages to the others.
 Updates will be sent every session as well as YouTube tutorials and other information.
3D design and 3D printing
Learning objectives-
 Students will understand what CAD design is, and what it is used for in engineering and
in the world.
 Students will be able to model basic shapes and objects in the real world.
 Students will be able to model dimensionally accurate objects in the real world to scale.
 Students will have some understanding of how a 3d printer works and an idea of the
process of 3d printing which include modeling, exporting an .stl file, preparing models
for 3d printing, using slicing software to orientate the 3d model, add needed supports, and
finally having an idea about the setup of a 3d printer and how to add or change filament.
 Students will most importantly have fun creating things they are interested in and bring it
to life.
Hands on learning objectives-
 Students will have access to a CR 10 3d printer where they can print models and learn
how a 3d printer operates.
 Students will be able to 3d print designs they create in multiple different colors and see
their creations come to life.
 Students will also have access to a 3d pen which can be used to draw objects in 3d by
printing out templates and tracing them.
Class structure-
 Total time estimated – 90 mins to 120 mins
 First 30 mins – students will learn the lesson of the day that pertains to 3d cad modeling.
 Second 30 mins students will apply what they have learned and create a specific design
assigned to them as practice.
 Last 30 mins – students can work on other designs not related to the lesson, make art with
a 3d pen or submit models to be 3d printed. This is a free time for students to do other
things on Tinkercad not related to the lesson.
 Throughout this entire time students are encouraged to ask questions to the instructor and
work with peers to gain a better understanding of what they are doing.
Lesson plan
Lessons can change in their order or topic and are not necessarily completed in 1 day. Pacing
will depend on the classes ability to understand the topic. At the end of 3 lessons there will be a
project to test the skills learned, and a hands-on learning experience that will be using the 3d
printer. For projects students will be able to work in groups, and at home.
 Lesson 1: introduction to Tinkercad and 3d design - Introduction to 3d design
software and familiarization to Tinkercad and its tools. Students will also learn the basics
of 3d modeling and design and how it pertains to the world around them and career fields
such as engineering.
 Practice – Navigating through the software and knowing its features by utilizing
the pan tool, zoom tool, and orientation tools.
 lesson 2: basic shapes – Students will learn to add and edit basic shapes and gain
knowledge of different editing tools to create desired shapes.
 Practice – Editing of shapes and deriving abstract shapes from basic blocks.
 Lesson 3: dimensions – Students will learn how to set the dimensions of objects in
Tinkercad. They will use the ruler tool to measure and edit the size of a shape. Lastly,
they will be able to use the edit grid tool to set the size of the workplace and change units
for their design as well as utilizing the snap grid tool.
 Practice – Create shapes with specific dimensions.
Project – Students will create an object that they see in the real world.
Hands on – Students will 3d print their object.
 Lesson 4: align tool – Students will learn to use the align tool to align multiple objects to
each other.
 Practice – Use align tool to make multiple objects rest on top of each other or
make them touch each other.
 lesson 5: mirror tool – Students will learn to mirror objects and make them face
different sides.
 Practice – Mirror several objects to face each other.
 Lesson 6: combine and subtract tool – Students will learn to combine 2 objects to be
able to be treated as a single unit and then later subtract those objects.
 Practice – Attach objects that are touching and objects that are not touching then
later subtract them.
Project – Create a 3d model of your room using the combine tool, subtract tool, mirror tool, and
align tool.
