INTRODUCTION

“The family is one of nature’s masterpieces.” (Santayana 2007) Family is a

single word with many different meanings. People have many ways of defining a family
and what being a part of a family means to them. What every family has in common is
that the people who call it a family are making clear that those people are important in
some way to the person calling them family. When everything seems to be wrong, the
family should be the one who makes it right. Nevertheless, families should be intact.

Child behavior can be affected by a number of things, Depending on the

severity of a broken home, the parent’s relationship with each other, as well as their
children, can affect how their children behave and may even develop. This doesn’t mean
that a parent’s divorce can make it so a child can never climb steps or hop on one foot,
but it can make it harder for children to develop social skills and may even set back their
achievements. Depending on a child’s age, the separation of their parents may cause
extreme stress and, in the worst case, even depression.

A child should be guided by their parents. Although a child may behave and
develop at their own rate, there are guidelines for a child’s development, as well as
behavior, when it comes to their mental ability. A parent has a big outcome on their
child’s emotional development. Being physically present may not be enough for a child,
and all that matters is their parent’s emotional attachment to them. If the parent is not
emotionally connected to their child, “the child will struggle to learn how to regulate his
emotions and interact with others appropriately” (Moges and Weber, 2014).
Statement of the Problem

The researchers aim to know the view of Grade 10 learners of Iligan City

National High School regarding how broken family affects the behavior of a child. To be

more specific researchers seek to answer the following.

1. How broken family affects a child’s behavior?

2. What are the views of grade 10 learners on how broken family affects a child’s

behavior?

3. What are the reasons of the respondents view?

Significance of the Study

This study will help the community to make us think that family is the basic

foundation of our society, it is where you are first nurtured in order to face the reality, it

is where love and caring is emphasized.

Many people do not see broken homes as a social problem & which somehow affect

children born into such homes. Some people might think that having a broken family is

easy but it’s not uncomplicated as anyone thinks. On the other hand, there are many

effects on children in broken homes. One in behavior problems and learning problems at

school with teachers, acting out against peers, and generally not wanting to cooperate

with any assignments or instructions. Children might lean toward the negative side to

peer pressure.

The importance of this study is for us to know that broken family affects the child

behavior. We all know that Family is very important in our daily living, because it

provides love, support and a construction of principles to each of its people.

Review of Related Works and Studies

Family is the basic components of the society and we believes that the number

one ingredient on youth’s life are their family, that the parents are the most important

source of youth’s behavior, which effect to their outlook in life. In today’s world when

everything is losing its meaning, we need to realize the importance of family more than

ever. While the world is becoming more modern and advanced, the meaning of family

and what stands for remains the same. Broken Family is a family that has split or

separated due to a variety of reasons. This leads to children being raised by single

parents, stepparents or others not related to the biological parents. Broken families can

result from separation due illness, divorce or other issues. The break-up of a family has

many negative impacts on the children. The children are more likely to act out against

siblings, biological parents or stepparents. (Anderson 2010).

There are many effects on children in broken homes. One in behavior

problems and learning problems at school with teachers, acting out against peers, and

generally not wanting to cooperate with any assignments or instructions. Children might

lean toward the negative side to peer pressure. At home, children may act out against

siblings, their biological parent and a possible stepparent. It was found that adolescents

had fewer behavior problems if there is a positive relationship not only with biological

parents, but if stepparents are involved, specially a strong relationship with stepfathers

(White & Gilbreth, 2001, as cited in Santrock, 2005).

In emotional issues children tend to have a hard time dealing with change.

When a parent leaves the family, a stepparent joins the family, or the child doesn’t feel

like their emotional needs are being met by their mother, they may express feelings of

anger, resentment, confusion and jealousy. This can bring on loneliness, isolation,

depression and low self-esteem if children don’t know how to express their feelings

properly (Binger, 2002).

Social issues broken family affects children’s social relationships in several

ways. Children act out their distress about their broken family by acting aggressive and

by engaging in bullying behavior, both of which can negatively affect peer relationships.

Other children may experience anxiety, which can make it difficult for them to seek

positive social interactions and engage in developmentally beneficial activities such as

teen sports.

Adjusting issues if children are confused with different things going on in the

family or at school more disagreement may occur and they have feelings of frustration,

that children may have include academic problems, internalizing and externalizing

problems, low self-esteem, and early engagement in sexual activities. In single family

homes, children develop greater autonomy where they tend to spend more time alone or

with peers. It was found that sons are more likely to resist directives and rules, whereas

daughters typically have a closer relationship to their mother (Freeman, 2002).

However, if mothers inappropriately discuss financial matters with their

children or express a negative feeling toward their ex-spouse, it can decrease the desire

for the child to spend time with the parent due to increase confusion about the whole

situation (Bigner, 2002).

Some basic statistics one in three Americans is a member of a stepfamily. Half

of America’s youth are or will be involved in one or more stepfamily situations during

their lifespan. Of children under 18 years of age living with 2 parents, 76.1% are living

with both biological parents, 10.3 % are living with their biological mother and a

stepfather, .6% are living with their biological father and a stepmother, and the other 10%

have other living situations. Of American children under 18 years of age living in single

parent homes, the majority live with their biological mother versus their biological father.

A broken family affects the children’s behavior. The probability of a youth

developing developmental problem increases rapidly as the number of risks increase in

comparison to the number of protective factors. The objective of family-focused

prevention programs should be to not only decrease risk factors, but also increase the

ongoing family protective family protective mechanisms.

Chapter V

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

This chapter shows the apothegm of finding the study and the derived conclusion

recommendations for the solution of the issue set in this study are also proposed.

Summary

A study was conducted in Iligan City National High School, Gen. Wood St.

Mahayahay, Iligan City with a total of hundred respondents from different section of

Grade 10 students. The survey done through descriptive method by the use of

questionnaire to gather information about effects of a broken family. The result from the

affects a child’s behavior. It has a total of 80 respondents or a percentage of 80%. Most

of the Grade 10 students said that it doesn’t affect a student. It has a total of 20

respondents. The number one reason of the respondents why it affects a student because

they experience bullying.

Conclusion

As we’ve conducted this study we have known that most of the respondents

think that broken family affects a child’s behavior. A parent has big outcome on their

child’s emotional development. People should care about this. Family is a crucial part of

the society which plays an undeniable part in the development of humans emotionally,

physically and psychologically. It is the first interaction any humans has with another and
one learns how to act and react to the surroundings from the members of the family. This

crucial element of society is itself sometimes in a state of turmoil. This turmoil in the

family may lead to separation or divorce. From the studies discussed, it can be clearly

concluded that broken family affects a child behavior. This study concludes that it is with

in the family’s resources to make a better life. The marital relationship is crucial to this

resolve of the family in poverty. It is crucial to effecting the change in families, from an

attitude of utter helplessness to one of upbeat hopefulness.

Recommendation

Research found out on how broken family affects a child behavior. They would

want to commend the future researchers who will have an interest with this project to find

out more idea in making this kind of research. In trying to find ways and means to

motivate students. It can be developed by the Guidance Department for teachers and

parents. Knowing if broken family affects a child behavior must be the main goal. A

number of researchers have identified behavioral or emotional characteristics that typify

what they refer as high conflict divorce. The problem with these studies is that they try to

identified the behavioral or emotional characteristics that contribute to a state of affairs

that is not clearly defined at the start.
