Pengertian
Contrastive Conjunction is a conjunction that connects two English sentences that are
contra. This means that the relationship between the first sentence with the two characters
is different or opposite.
There are several popular Contrastive Conjunctions and are commonly used in English
sentences. They are Though, Although, Even though, Even if, Unless, Yet, But, However,
Despite, In spite of, Whereas Nevertheless, & Notwithstanding.

2. Contrastive Conjunction THOUGH

The THOUGH conjunction means though, although, but, however, it depends on the
sentence. Thoughts can be placed at the beginning, middle or end of an English sentence.
example sentences using Conjunction Contrast namely Though.

Ex: It was raining. We still enjoy the concert.


Though it was raining, we still enjoyed the concert.

3. ALTHOUGH & EVEN THOUGH Contrastive Conjunction

Next we discuss Conjunction Although and Even Thoughts. The English conjunctions mean
"even" & "even though" are more or less the same as "though" that is though or even
though.

The difference, Although and Even Though can not be abbreviated. In addition, although
the use is usually for things or something that is formal so it is more often used in writing
rather than speaking.
the use of Conjunction Although and Even Though is only at the beginning and middle of the
sentence. So it can NOT be used at the end of a sentence.

Ex : That coat is nice.


I don’t like the price.
Although that coat is nice, I don’t like the price.

4. Contrastive Conjunction EVEN IF

Even though it emphasizes a fact or something that has or is happening. Whereas Even If is
still in the form of imagination or something that has not yet happened. It could be said that
Even If is a form of presupposition.

Ex : Susan wouldn’t buy a new house.


She earned a big salary.
Even if Susan earned a big salary, she wouldn’t buy a new house.
5. Contrastive Conjunction UNLESS

In English, the word Unless has the meaning "except if".

Ex : You cannot enter this room.


You don’t have a member card.
You cannot enter this room unless you have a member card.

6. Contrastive Conjunction YET & BUT

Contrastive Conjunction Yet and But means however, but, however, even so.

Ex : I like milk.
My sister prefers coffee.
I like milk, but my sister prefers coffee.

7. Contrastive Preposition DESPITE & IN SPITE OF

Despite & In Spite Of each has the same meaning, that is, even though, however, regardless,
despite. The connecting word Despite tends to be more formal. But they have the same
meaning. So, Despite & In Spite Of is an example of Contrastive Preposition followed by
nouns, pronouns and Verb-ing verbs.

Ex : i couldn’t sleep well.


I was in a comfortable room.
I couldn’t sleep well despite being in a comfortable room.

8. Contrastive Conjunction WHEREAS

the Whereas conjunctions also emphasize the difference or two opposite sentences. The
word Whereas has the same meaning as While in expressing two contrasting things.
Whereas can be placed at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence. Both in the
beginning and in the middle, use commas (,) to separate the dependent & independent
clauses.

Ex : He loves foreign holidays.


His wife prefers to stay at home.
He loves foreign holidays, whereas his wife prefers to stay at home.

9. Contrastive Conjunction NEVERTHELESS

Conjunction Nevertheless has a meaning however, even if, though or however.


Nevertheless it can also be used in conjunction with But conjunctions.
English conjunctions however are more often used at the beginning of sentences. In
addition, the word can also be placed in the middle and at the end.

Ex : Stinky was an old group music. Nevertheless, I like listening to their songs.

10. Contrastive Preposition NOTWITHSTANDING

Like Despite and In Spite Of, the word Notwithstanding is an example of Contrastive
Preposition.

This word is usually followed by nouns (Noun), pronouns (Pronoun), and Verb-ing
verbs. Although Notwithstanding can also function as Conjunction, this word is generally
used as a Preposition.

Its use is not as popular as Despite & In Spite Of. However, it is still used when
academic writing.

Ex : It is raining.
I have to pick up my little sister from school.
I have to pick up my little sister from school notwithstanding the rain.
