FLUORESCENT MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION (FMPI) − SPOP−115

Task 70−32−00−240−009:

1. SPOP 115 − Rod And Induction (Fixture Or Cable) Fluorescent

Magnetic Particle Inspection

R A. General

R (1) Refer to 70−32−00, Inspection/Check−01 (Task

R 70−32−00−240−101) to:

R (a) Find the FMPI quality control requirements

R (b) Prepare the equipment and the iron oxide

R suspensions.

R B. Procedure

R (1) Degrease the part, if necessary, with SPOP 209. Refer

to 70−21−00, SPOP−209 (Task 70−21−00−110−041).

R (2) To magnetize, eccentrically rotate the part around the

central conductor approximately every 4D linear inches
of the OD circumference of the part. (Use the first
amperage number.)

R NOTE: The number of linear inches (4D) is the diameter

R (D) of the conductor, in inches, multiplied by
R four (4).

R (3) Put the part fully in an iron oxide suspension or flow

R on as applicable.

R (4) Examine the part with UV light.

R (5) Magnetize the part by induction by one of these

R methods. (Use the second amperage number.)

NOTE: Use the largest soft iron core available that

will pass through the ID of the part to be
inspected.

(a) Manual Method

1 Wrap three turns of 0000 cable around the OD.

2 Put the transformer core in the center of the

part.

R 3 Magnetize the part with direct current for

R one−fifth to one−half second (minimum) with the
R "Quick Break" switch in the circuit.

(b) Fixture Method

1 Center the part on the induced current

fixtures.

R 2 Magnetize the part with direct current for

R one−fifth to one−half second (minimum) with the
R "Quick Break" switch in the circuit.

R (6) Put the part fully in an iron oxide suspension or flow

R on as applicable.

R (7) Examine the part with UV light.

R (8) Record the inspection.

R (9) Demagnetize the part.

R (10) Wash the part with PMC 1887 petroleum, magnetic

particle suspension vehicle (high flash point) or PMC
9010 petroleum solvent to remove the fluorescent
background.

R (11) As necessary, apply corrosion inhibitor to the part

with SPOP 5. Refer to 70−21−00, SPOP−05 (Task
70−21−00−110−048).
