STANDARD PRACTICES MANUAL (PN 585005)

ANTIFRICTION BEARING INSPECTION − INSPECTION/CHECK−05

Task 70−35−00−220−105:

1. Duplex Bearing Rematching

A. General

(1) The rematching of duplex detail bearings permits

salvaging one serviceable detail bearing from an
operated duplex bearing set rendered unusable because
of the unserviceability of the other detail bearing.

(2) In rematching, a usable duplex bearing is obtained by

matching a serviceable detail bearing from one set with
a serviceable detail bearing from a second set. The
former position of each member in a set is not a
consideration in rematching.

(3) The success of rematching depends, in large part, on

the capability of conducting the necessary duplex
bearing inspections. It is suggested that, when
this rematching is introduced, its use be limited
and closely monitored until sufficient successful
experience has been accumulated to warrant application
on an unlimited basis.

B. Rematching Limitations

(1) No interchanging, machining, repair, or replacement

of balls, rings, or cage within a detail bearing is
permitted.

(2) Do not rematch detail bearings from a duplex set

involved in a major rotor failure accompanied by
excessive loading or vibration, or a detail bearing
from a duplex set in which the other detail bearing
sustained a major failure resulting in overloading or
excessive temperatures.

(3) Do not rematch details a second time.

NOTE: For JT4, GG4, and FT4 engines, this restriction

does not apply to the oil baffle and spacer.

(4) Do not rematch detail bearings whose total part time

is so high that, from past experience, it would be
improbable that the set would endure another heavy
maintenance cycle. A 16000 hour limit is suggested
as a guide only, until sufficient experience has been
accumulated for operators to establish their own
limits.

ANTIFRICTION BEARING INSPECTION − INSPECTION/CHECK−05

CAUTION: DO NOT REMATCH DETAIL BEARINGS FABRICATED BY

DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS.

(5) Rematched detail bearings must be of same part number.

CAUTION: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY THE ALGEBRAIC

FLUSHNESS DIFFERENCE ON ALL DUPLEX THRUST
BEARINGS, EXCEPT FT4/GG4 NO. 4 BEARINGS,
EXCEED 0.0004 INCH. FOR FT4/GG4 NO. 4
BEARINGS ONLY, THE ALGEBRAIC FLUSHNESS
DIFFERENCE MUST BE WITHIN +0.0005 to +0.0011
INCH.

(6) Rematched sets must meet all requirements and service

limits specified in Inspection − Engine Bearings,
70−35−00, Inspection/Check−01 (Task 70−35−00−220−101).

(7) For JT4, GG4, and FT4 engines, the oil baffle and
spacer are included in measuring flushness. These
parts must be included in rematching and must be
selectively chosen to get the correct flushness for the
set.

C. Identification of Rematched Duplex Bearings

(1) Identify rematched bearing sets as follows:

(a) Reserialize the low time detail bearing to that

of the high time detail bearing. The rematched
set assumes the total part time of the high time
detail bearing. Refer to Bearing Mating and
Serial Numbers, 70−35−00, Inspection/Check−00
(Task 70−35−00−220−100).

NOTE: For JT4, GG4, and FT4 engines, reserialize

the oil baffle and spacer to that of the
high time detail bearing.

(b) Remark each detail bearing as necessary to

identify as the front (−1) member, or the rear
(−2) member.

(c) Mark "RM" after each serial number for

identification as a rematched bearing set.

(1) Maintain records for each rematched set to include the

data that follows for each detail: Part Number, Serial
Number, total time, flushness, contact angle, bore,
outside diameter, and internal radial clearance.
