pH AND TITRATION
WHAT IS pH?
The pH of an aqueous
solution is the measure of
its acidity or basicity. It is
calculated by using the
Hydronium Ion
concentration in the
solution. pH means
Potential of Hydrogen

pH and Titration
STRONG ACIDS
•HClO4 – Perchloric Acid
•HCl – Hydrochloric Acid
•HBr – Hydrobromic Acid
•HI – Hydroiodic Acid
•HNO3 – Nitric Acid
•H2SO4 – Sulfuric Acid

pH and Titration
STRONG BASES
•LiOH – Lithium Hydroxide
•NaOH – Sodium Hydroxide
•KOH – Potassium Hydroxide
•Ca(OH)2 – Calcium Hydroxide
•Sr(OH)2 – Strontium Hydroxide
•Ba(OH)2 – Barium Hydroxide

pH and Titration
EXAMPLES
1. A solution is 0.055 M HBr. What is the pH of this
solution?
Answer: 1.26
2. Calculate the pOH of 0.0010 M aqueous HCl solution.
Answer: 11
3. Calculate the hydroxide ion concentration of a
solution with pH = 2.
Answer: 1x10-12 M

TITRATION

pH and Titration
WHAT IS TITRATION?
Titration is a method that is
carried out to determine the
concentration of a particular
solute in a solution. It involves
combining a solution where the
solute concentration is not
known with reagent solution of
known concentration.

pH and Titration
TITRATION
Standard Solution – solution of known concentration,
aka titrant. Also called a titrant.
Titrand – is the one being analyzed, aka analyte.
Equivalence Point – the point at which
stoichiometrically equivalent quantities are brought
together.
Indicator – substance that changes color at (or near)
the equivalence point

TITRATION

M: Molarity
V: volume
n: # of H+ ions in the acid
or OH- ions in the base
pH and Titration
Sample Problem
42.5 mL of 1.3M KOH are required to neutralize 50.0 mL of H2SO4. Find the
molarity of H2SO4.

H3O+ (H2SO4) OH- (KOH) MxVxn=MxVxn

M=? M = 1.3 M M (50.0mL)(2) = (1.3M)(42.5mL)(1)
V = 50.0 mL V = 42.5 mL M = 0.55M H2SO4
n=2 n=1

pH and Titration
EXAMPLES
1. A 25 ml solution of 0.5 M NaOH is titrated until
neutralized into a 50 mL sample of HCl. What is the
concentration of the HCl?
2. Calculate the molarity of an acetic acid solution if
34.57 mL of this solution are needed to neutralize
25.19 mL of 0.1025 M sodium hydroxide.
3. The concentration of NaOH is 0.5 M if 30 mL is needed
to titrate 35 mL of acid, what is the concentration of
the acid?
