A. INTRODUCTION

This submission outlines the analysis and design of soldier piles system for open
trench and 3.5m diameter temporary “sinking” RC caisson for construction of
manhole (MH4) at Tengah Air base. Adopted ERSS for open trench comprises of
UB200x200x41kG/m with layers of horizontal walers and struts.

The entire excavation is nested in green field environment with sufficient space for
open cut excavation. Entire depth of temporary RC caisson/shaft is made up of
series of cast-in-situ RC rings of 1.0m depth above ground level and sink in
tandem with the excavation work. Simulation was done by Plaxis software,
incorporate relevant soil parameters extracted from nearby soil borelog. The site
lies within the geological demarcation of Bt Timah Formation and subsoil
properties as depicted in BH-402 were used to extract relevant soil parameters.

B. CODES OF PRACTICES

The following SS or EN Standards/Codes of Practice are used and/or referred in

the impact study.

SS EN 1993 Eurocode 3 : Design of Steel Structures

SS EN 1995 Eurocode 5 : Design of Timber Structures
SS EN 1997 Eurocode 7 : Geotechnical Design
SS CP 18: 1992 Code of Practice for Earthworks
SS CP 04: 2003 Code of Practice for Foundation, Singapore Standard
TR 26: 2010: Reference for Deep Excavation

C. SOIL PROFILE AND INTERPRETATION OF SOIL PARAMETERS

Based on the soil exploratory findings from relevant bore logs, the project area lies
within the geological demarcation of Residual soil underlain by Bukit Timah
formation with weathered rock founding stratum.

The subsoil comprised of firm to stiff-sand-Silt mixtures probably formed by the in-
situ weathering of the underlying bedrock (residual soils and completely
weathered rock derived from Bukit Timah Granite) at upper layers. The
proportions of sand, silt and clay are highly variable and exist in a state varying
from firm/stiff condition at the top to very stiff/hard/very dense condition at deeper
depth.

BH-402 was near to the proposed temporary shafts and used to extract real soil
profile/parameters. Soil profile of the borlog is summarized and characterized in
Table 1 and Annex B.
