1. Let’s refresh our memory of Mitosis. List the phases and briefly describe what
occurs in each phase. You will want to get your notes out too!

2. In lab today we will be using candy to simulate mitosis. The following pieces of
candy will represent the parts. **You are NOT allowed to eat ANY candy until
you are given the OK after your quiz. If you do eat candy before you are allowed
to, you will receive a ‘0’ today.

Gummy worms = chromosomes (the colors show the partners)

Rolos = centrioles
Peel n eat licorice = spindle fibers (peel it apart to use a few pieces)
Small red licorice = nuclear membrane (use pieces and space
around your chromosomes)
Wax Paper = cell cytoplasm and outer cell membrane
**You can use some more of the peel n eat licorice for a
cell membrane but make sure you don’t confuse it with the
nuclear membrane.

3. Wash your hands or wear gloves for this activity. Keep all candy on the wax
paper or in the baggie. You need to set up each phase and be able to describe
what each part it and what occurs in that phase. Once you have gone through
each phase (the whole process of mitosis) you will call the teacher over for your
group quiz. **Make sure every person in your group knows the WHOLE
process.

4. Group quiz: when you are ready the teacher will come over to your group and ask
each INDIVIDUAL a question, to set up a phase, and to describe what is
occurring without the help of their group. Other group members can help out
only when the teacher asks you to support your group. Each person will explain
at least one phase. You will receive one group grade so you need to make sure
you all understand it before you begin. (10 pts)

5. Clean up! You can eat the candy once your teacher has given you the Ok. Wash
your hands and throw away the non-edible parts.
