CHAPTER III

A.NARRATIVE EXPERIENCES

Day 01 – February 19, 2019

On the first day, Mam Olive and Sir Archie Benauro oriented us about safety

rules, respecting the staffs, always wear uniform and I.D. Engr. Eduardo Ramos, the

division manager oriented us also about the safety rules when we went to Power Plant,

he also introduce to us the person who will handle us in Electro-Mechanical Section.

Engr. Francis Francisco is an Electronics Engineer in Electro Mechanical Section and

also Engr. Rolex Pimentel who first to discuss to us about the power plant and plant

equipment. We have a short discussion with sir Rolex about the functions of mechanical

and electrical equipment. They also teach us how to read the Power plants Blue Print

and the connection of it. We started reading the manuals of every equipment of the

power plant. After that, we went to Baligatan Hydro Electric Power Plant, we have an

actual discussion of the equipment like the generators, transformers. We went to control

room and we’ve there the operators, sir Flor Real and sir Marlon Mangahas, they are

the plant operators and plant electricians.

Day 02 – February 20

On the second day we attended a toolbox meeting, it is an every morning

meeting of Electro – Mechanical Section. We continue reading the manuals of the

equipment, we read the manual of butterfly valve and we study the function of it. After

that, sir Rolex introduce to us one of the old equipment in the power plant that is place

in stock room, the governor, it is the main controller of the hydraulic turbine. The

governor varies the water flow through the turbine to control its speed or power output.

Generating units speed and system frequency may be adjusted by the governor.

Day 03 – February 21

We attended toolbox meeting with all the staff of Electro Mechanical Section. We

continue reading manual of equipment, I’ve read the manual of hydraulic turbine and

study the function of it. Hydraulic turbines have a row of blades fitted to the rotating

shaft or a rotating plate. Flowing liquid, mostly water, when pass through the hydraulic

turbines it strikes the blades of the turbine and makes the shaft rotate. There is three

types of turbine, Kaplan turbine, pelton turbine and francis turbine but the turbine they

are using in Baligatan Hydro Power plant is a Kaplan turbine.

Day 04 – February 22

We continue reading the manuals of the power plant, we went to Baligatan Hydro

Electric power plant for the clarifications of what we’ve read. We interviewed the on duty

plant operators, sir Ellioterio Dela Cruz,RME and sir Satur Bacani. We ask about

functions of electrical equipment.

Day 05 – February 28

We attended the every morning meeting with the EMS staff, toolbox meeting is

important for them before they are deployed in there designated areas. Engr. Francis

Francisco instructed us that we will have a presentation on March 15 as a part of our

requirement. Sir Francis told us that we need to study the whole sequence of the

power plant on how to operate ,how the pre start condition works and on how start and

shutdown the Power plant.

Day 06 – March 01

We went to Baligatan Powerplant for the additional information in our

presentation. We interviewed the plant electrician on how electrical equipment works

and on how electrical is combined to mechanical works. We knew that a solenoid valve

is usually connected in the process of flow pipeline to control the flow of certain fluid like

liquid or air. The solenoid valve is the coil of the insulated or the enameled wire wound

around the solid or hollow shape made up of iron or steel or any other ferromagnetic

material. The solenoid valve is the electromechanical valve comprising of the solenoid

coil and a plunger which is connected to the stem of the valve and that is what we

learned on that day.

Day 07 – March 04

We attended a toolbox meeting, plant operators and plant maintenance ask a

materials that they will use in painting of the metal equipment. We went again in the

power plant for the study of our presentation. Sir Ellioterio Dela Cruz one of the plant

operators discuss to us the more functions of equipment. He discuss to us the role of

excitation system in a generator, we knew that the rotor or the field coils in a generator

produce the magnetic flux that is essential to the production of the electric power. The

rotor is a rotating electromagnet that requires a DC (Direct Current) electric power

source to excite the magnetic field. This power comes from an exciter. That day, we

have a lot of knowledge from sir Dela Cruz.

Day 08 – March 05

On the fifth day of March, we stay in office for the whole day. We read again the

manuals and we study the blue print of the power plant to understand more of what we

learned from the plant operators.

Day 09 – March 06

We went to Baligatan Hydro Electric Power plant for the study of our

presentation. We take a photo of some equipment in the power plant for the additional

information in our study. We had sharing of ideas with my group mates so that all of us

can understand our presentation.

Day 10 – March 07

On this day, we decided stay in the office so that we can read more manuals. We

continue studying about electrical relay, we knew that if the pre start condition of the

power plant does not done properly, the power plant will not start. We had a lot of relay

to study, specially in the control room, like K43Q, K410. Relays has there own functions

and purpose, there is a relay for shutdown, for start up, and there is a relay for

emergency shutdown.

Day 11 – March 08

This is the last day of our first week on our ojt, we explore more on reading

manuals. We had a lot of discussion with my group mates about generators, turbines

and on how waters flow in a power plant. In the afternoon, we joined the flag retriet of all

the employees of NIA.

Day 12 – March 11

We attended the toolbox meeting with EMS staff. After that, we continue the

research in our presentation, we read manuals and we use google to search some

important things that needed in our presentation.

Day 13 – March 12

We decided to go in the Baligatan Hydro Electric Power Plant because sir rolex

said that some parts of the control desk will upgrade. We witness the changing of pilot

bulb on the control desk. The pilot bulb is the indicators on the control desk. It is the

additional information on our presentation.

Day 14 – March 13

This day we went to Baligatan Hydro Electric Power plant because some

mechanical equipment will be dis assemble by the plant mechanical. We witness the dis

assembly of some mechanical equipment. We take a photo of some equipment in the

power plant for the additional information in our study. We had a sharing of ideas with

my group mates so that all of us can understand our presentation.

Day 15 – March 14

We finalize our report and we practice it through group discussion. We practice

answering some possible questions so that we can answer it correctly if the panels ask

us a question.

Day 16 – March 15

This is the day of our presentation, in the morning we practice again our

presentation through group discussion. Afternoon of our sixteenth day of On the Job

training, we present our report to Engr. Francis Francisco, Engr. Rolex Pimentel and

Engr. Jesper Victorio. We did not answer some questions about mechanical functions of

the power plant, because we focus more in electrical and electronics functions of the

power plant. Engr. Francis told us that we need to study more in our presentation, we

need to present again our report on the other day.

Day 17 – March 18

We attended a toolbox meeting with Electro Mechanical Section staff. As sir

francis said, we study again our report through reading manuals and we watch some

videos tutorials in the internet.

B.CHALLENGES/DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED

I encountered some challenges and difficulties on my On the Job training. Work

of an Engineer are never been easy for students like me to experience. Engineers must

possess a Good Communication and Leadership skills, an engineer must be best in all

filed of work, in Decision making, technical, social and paperwork’s.

That is what I need to improve to myself, my decision making skills is not yet

enough to be a real engineer. I need more practice and more experience to overcome

my incapability.

C.PROBLEMS MET AND SOLUTIONS ENCOUNTERED

Lack of Communication with the staff gives us some problems, especially

on gathering data’s and information for our reports. Engineers instruct us to go in the

Power plant to gather data and interview the operators there.

Be friendly to the staff, don’t be shy to ask what thing I do not understand about

equipment and functions. That’s the solution I did in my problems on my On the Job

Training and that’s all works through cooperation of I and the staff.
