CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Libraries is a place where the learners provide a safe place to focus on their learning as
well as access information from their numerous resources, including librarians, texts, and for any
educational purposes. Library can provide us additional knowledge and instructional material in
searching informations.

It is very important for the learners to gather more informations and library is the house
of knowledge that can lead them in their research, a perfect workplace to develop their learning
process and thinking skills for their projects and assignments. Library is a place where the school
community can access an organized, selected collection of multimedia and digital resources that
supports the curriculum, addressing students varying reading abilities and learning styles.
(Contreras et.al, 2016) When school libraries are well-organized, it is easy for the learners to
select their chosen books and criticized ideas.

But most of the learners are facing struggles when they are in the library. Difficulty in
finding books which contain the subject for research is another problems experienced by the
library users. (Arellano et.al, 2008) Most of the learners are having struggles in terms of finding
books that consist of too much time. Proper management system for the library has a big impact
not only for the learners but also for the librarians of the school.

Library management system benefits every students in 21st century. This system provides
the users a number of selection that would make locating a certain book faster and more
convenient. It can help the learners in maintaining data of books issued to learners and books
available in the library. The work of the learners will be easier, rather than consuming long hours
of searching where they can search it if there is a book they are really looking for.

The purpose of this study is to inform learners that they can take advantage the benefit of
the best quality service in library management system. This study aims to inform the learners
about the positive effects having library management system. The difference of this study from
other research is that our research focuses on the main issue in one workplace that most of the
researchers did not focused in.

The significance of this study will provide useful information of having library
management system. With the help of this study, it will greatly benefit the learners in terms of
the proper and easy way of finding and searching books in the library.

The study give the learner's to improve the library management system of the school.

Statement of the Problem

Generally the study aims to determine the library management system of St Joseph
Academy.

1. What are the effects of having library management system?

2. What are the problems that the learners was facing while they are inside the library?
3. Base on the result what are the suggestions and recommendations to enhance the library
management system of St. Joseph Academy?

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to give possible solution about the time consuming problems that the
learners was facing. The library management system will benefit the learners and the library of
the Saint Joseph Academy in terms of searching books.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focus on the library management system of the learners of St. Joseph Academy.
The general intent of this study is for the learners and especially for the library users who has
facing struggles and difficulties in finding books when they are at the library.
The researchers find the library management system as the effective way needed to
improve the library and the school could benefit too. This study will mainly identify the effects
of having library management system and the importance of it.
They focused on Saint Joseph Academy San Jose, Batangas library users, the learners who
need to lessen their time in searching books in the library.

Significance of the study

The study will benefit the following:
Learners. This study will benefit learners to lessen their time in searching books with the use of
library management system.

School Administration. This study will benefit the school administration in improving the
school library in Saint Joseph Academy. Library management system will be a tool that can be
used by learners, and enhancing the library in school.

Teachers. This study will benefit the teachers to have more efficient way of searching books in
the library. This could be easy for them to search and browse books with the help of library
management system.

Parents. This study will be their guide in determining the problems of the learners that are
facing inside the library. The library management system will be a possible solution to solve this
problem.

Future Researchers. This study will benefit the future researchers to have more idea about the
library management system, on how to use and to improve this system when the year counts.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Library. A library is a curated collection of sources of information and similar resources,

selected by experts and made accessible to a defined community for reference or borrowing,
often in a quiet environment conducive to study (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library). In this
study, it refers to a place where books are placed in a one room.
Library Management system. Library Management System is a software used to manages the
catalog of a library. This helps to keep the records of whole transactions of the books available
in the library (https://ampletrails.com/library-management-system/). In this study, it refers to a
application in a devices to easily access books in library.
Books. A book is a medium for recording information in the form of writing or images, typically
composed of many pages (made of papyrus, parchment, vellum, or paper) bound together and
protected by a cover. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book). In this study, it refers to a source or
information that everyone can gathered.

Review of Related Literature

This chapter presents some of the literature related to the study. The literature presented in this
section contains information, finding and concepts that contribute to the attainment of accurate
information about the problem.

Conceptual Literature
1. Definition of Library
According to the Oxford English Dictionary "Library is a building, room or set of rooms,
containing a collection of books for the use for the public or of some particular portion of it, or of
the members of some society, or the like; a public institution or establishment, charged with the
care of a collection of books, and the duty of rendering the books accessible to those who
required to use them". Library is a place of books that everyone needs. It is where a person allow
to read books and gather information.
The term ‘library’ means different things to different people depending on where they
stand on the enlightenment spectrum. To some, it is a bookstore; a building where books are kept
for safe custody over-seen by a stern-looking watchman in the name of a librarian, essentially
ensuring that the books are not tampered with unduly. (Issa, 2009) The library is a place of
reading and studying, make their second homes to read their textbooks and notebooks in
preparation. It is also a storage of information that all writers render through the different books.

2. Benefits of library management system

It will help the learners or the library users to increase their time on finding books.
Library Management system help in maintaining data of books issued to learners and books
available in the library. (Serosoft, 2018) It will benefit the learners to become easier in mapping
the available books. This also helps librarians to spot any particular book at any given time in the

library. This kind of Library management system can be easily customized as per individuals
requirements.

3. Library management system problems

Library management system is not easy, it includes a lot of process. According to
Rahafassr, we need to maintain the record of news and retrieve the details of books available in
the library which mainly focuses on basic operations in a library like adding new member, new
books, and up new information, searching books and members and facility to borrow and return
books.

Research Literature
The study of Gojeh, et al. (2013) entitled “Human and Physical Environmental Factors
Affecting Students’ Utilization of Library and Information Services in Colleges of Education
Libraries in Nigeria” stated that when discussing on school libraries and their services and
support of the educational programs of schools, it also states that such libraries should have a
well-stocked, adequately balanced and well-organized collection of books and non-books media
that are easily accessible for teachers and students use.

A thesis entitled “Factors affecting the Library of Lyceum of the Philippines University
Batangas” by Dulle (2014) stated that in Nigeria they found that poor quality of school library
resources, scarcity of current reading and the research materials where the challenges facing
students in using school library. In the same vein one study that poor library accommodation; for
library orientation and restricted library hours where problems militating against the use of
school library.

“Automated Library System of Batangas City Library” by Arellano, et.al (2008) focused
on the difficulty in finding books which contain the subject for research is another problem
experienced by library users. Although the library has the card catalog, the study proves that
most library users do not have the knowledge or the patience to maximize its use.

The study of Concentras, et.al (2013) entitled “Factors affecting the Library of Lyceum
of the Philippines University Batangas” stated that the library has the responsibility to upgrade
its status through open access to this advances, to develop a plan of action in order to contribute
and to become an effective partner instruction, research and extension programs of an
educational institute.

A thesis entitled “Online Catalog System of the Lyceum of the Philippines Library” by
Austria, et.al (2012) focused on this system that will be implemented to provide best quality
service to the university library of the Lyceum of the Philippines University that will greatly
benefit the students, the faculty members and other staff of the university to lessen their time and
effort for searching and going to the library.

Another paper entitled “ A Thesis Catalog System for the College of Computer studies
of Lyceum of Batangas” by Asinas, et.al (2006) is about a system providing a computerized
searching of books in the library. It provides a system that will provide online searching of
availability materials in the library.

A study called “Automated Library System of Batangas City Library” of Arellano, et.al,
(2008) , is an automated system to help to lessen if not totally eliminate the problems
experienced by the library user and the library management. Such computerized system also
aims to facilitate and efficient way of searching and studying.

“Networking and Book Catalog Browsing of Lyceum of Batangas” by Dela Cruz, A.,
et.al (2000) is a system designed not only for students or other library user but to the librarian as
well in such a way that this system provides and automated card catalog browsing where in the
user can locate information about a certain library material in a much lesser time and effort.
Similar to the proposed system “Automated Library System” they both focused in computerized
acquisition of information for in certain reading material in much lesser time and effort.

Synthesis

Studies that are presented from the previous section that were chosen by the researchers
are related to the research which they conducted. This section provides similarities and
differences of these studies with their own research.
Austria and Arellano have the similar study since both system provide a computerized
searching the availability of books in the library. The main concern of this study is to provide a
best quality services and to lessen their time and effort for searching the availability resources.
Asinas and Hag states that the study are providing computerized searching of books. This
study this will be only for searching books and does not include the availability of research
papers in the library.
Silvestre has the similarity to both of this study since both have computerized searching
of books in the library. The difference of this study to the aforesaid thesis provides online
borrowing and reservation of books.
Austria and Dela Cruz has the similarity to the study since it includes computerized
searching, borrowing and reservation of books. The difference of this study would make a
number of selection locating a certain book faster and more convenient.
Gojeh and Dulle have the similar study since both study provides for enhancing the
library facilities and library orientation inside the library. This study will be a tool for enhancing
the materials that is used inside the libraries.

Conceptual Framework
In the development of the project, different concepts were considered. The researchers
thought that all concepts are related to the present study. These concept play significant roles
towards the accomplishment of the study. A paradigm identifies a programs input, it's output, in
the processing step required to transform the input into output. The Input, Process, Output (IPO)
model developed by Charles Pavitt (2014), is used as guide in general direction of the study.
The input contains the time consuming of the learners in the library.
In the process box, the content of the input box was joined together and underwent
process like Questionnaire.
The output box is finally the product of process input which is Online Public Access
Catalog (OPAC) for the easily of the leaners in St. Joseph Academy.

Defintion of terms

Library user. The second of the two main functions of libraries is directed at actively exploiting
the collection to satisfy the information needs of library users (https://www.britannica.com/). In
this study, it refers to the one who uses the library.

Library System. An integrated library system (ILS), also known as a library management
system (LMS) is an enterprise resource planning system for a library, used to track items owned,
orders made, bills paid, and patrons who have borrowed (https://en.wikipedia.org/). In this study,
it refers to a software that can search a book in a library.

OPAC. An online public access catalog (often abbreviated as OPAC or simply library catalog) is
an online database of materials held by a library or group of libraries (https://en.wikipedia.org/).
In this study, it refers to the online application to search a certain sources.

Time consuming. A time-consuming task takes a lot of time to do

(https://dictionary.cambridge.org/). In this study, it refers to time when learners are searching
their books in library.

Borrowing. Receiving something of value in exchange for an obligation to pay back something
of usually greater value at a particular time in the future (http://www.businessdictionary.com/).
In this study, it refers to the book when the learners borrows it.
