TABLE OF CONTENTS
1.0 GENERAL
This specification contains the minimum design, installation, testing and commissioning
requirements for automatic rack sprinkler systems. The automatic rack sprinkler system is to
assure the safety of the occupants in the building during a fire. The design of the automatic
rack sprinkler system shall conform to this specification and the complete automatic rack
sprinkler system shall be fully compatible to all components supplied.
2.0 REFERENCES
The referenced codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of quality for
materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these standards and the
text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.
The latest revision of the referenced codes and standards shall be used as a minimum guide.
In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment, materials and processes
conforming to one group of codes and standards.

3.0 DEFINITIONS
All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full compliance
with the respective health and safety requirements established by the following:

5.0 SUBMITTALS
The Contractor shall submit the following items for review and approval before commencing
the work:
Product Data
Product data shall include principal dimensions, general construction and material for
each item intended to be furnished and installed.
Manufacturer's catalog data sheets shall be submitted for all rack sprinkler heads, alarm
check valves and all other accessories and system components.
Installation Instructions
Submit copies of the manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions for all
equipment. Include valve data and servicing instructions.
Shop Drawings
Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 13.
Submit Coordination Drawings
Superimposed drawings showing location of each sprinkler and all other activities
simultaneously.
Hydraulic Calculations
The hydraulic calculations for the entire automatic rack sprinkler system shall be by a
computer generated hydraulic calculation program, such as HASS, Elite, or Pipenet.
The calculations shall meet the requirements of NFPA 13.
As-Built Drawings
Clearly indicate sprinklers, systems, locations and symbols on the Shop Drawings and
As-built plans.
Clearly indicate valves, alarms and controls locations.
Identify any variation from Contract Drawings.
Maintenance and Operating Instructions
Submit data conforming to NFPA 13 for maintenance of rack sprinkler systems.
Equipment manufacturer recommended spare parts and tools list.
Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
Test Reports
Accurately record and report the methods of testing, times and dates of the test,
witnesses to the test, and the results of the test.

Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements in NFPA
13.
Include Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for aboveground and underground
piping.
The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and propose
programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified quality to the
approval of MARAFIQ.
The Contractor shall prepare and submit a set of As-Built Drawings and hydraulic calculations
of the system, maintenance and instruction bulletins and the applicable parts of the
Contractor’s material and test certificates covering material and tests certifying that the work
has been completed and tested in accordance with plans and specifications.
The design of the automatic rack sprinkler system shall be based on the type of racks, height
of racks, how the commodity is packaged and the commodity to be stored.
The automatic rack sprinkler system shall be connected to a reliable water supply to provide
sufficient water and pressure to meet the firewater demand for the duration of time as
required by NFPA 13.
Backflow preventers shall be used where potable water could be contaminated through
siphoning or back pressure from fire water piping.

The area protected by a single system of rack sprinklers not exceed 3716 m (40,000 ft ) of
floor area occupied by the racks, including aisles, regardless of the number of levels of in-rack
sprinklers.
Rack sprinkler systems designed by a pipe schedule system shall not be accepted.
The fire protection water supply lines, controlling devices, protective devices, alarm systems,
supervisory devices and related equipment shall be made compatible so that all equipment
shall function together as specified.
The design of the automatic rack sprinkler system shall be coordinated with the rack design
and the arrangement the products are to be stored on the racks.
The design of rack sprinkler protection systems shall be complete with all necessary
accessories for proper operation.
For each sprinkler zone, provide a control and fire alarm valve assembly, flow switch, self-
contained test and drain assembly and pressure gauge, in accordance with NFPA 13.
System design and installation shall reflect high quality professional work that properly
accounts for practical maintenance concerns and aesthetic concerns, as well as meets the
design requirements.
The system and its components shall be suitably designed to withstand vibration and impact.
Each section or area served by an automatic rack sprinkler system shall be capable of being
isolated by one water supply valve only. The isolation valve in each section shall be readily
accessible, and its location clearly and permanently indicated.
Separate detection systems shall be installed for ceiling sprinkler systems and in-rack
sprinkler systems.
Detectors shall be located in the transverse flue in single row racks and in the longitudinal flue
in double-row racks.
8.0 PRODUCTS
All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when available,
from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products manufactured out-
of-Kingdom must be approved by MARAFIQ. All products, system components and hardware
shall be in compliance with NFPA 13. Only listed materials and devices shall be used in the
installation of automatic rack sprinkler system.
All products, system components and hardware shall be in compliance with the applicable
NFPA standards and the Project Specifications.

All valves, sprinklers, alarms and any additional fire fighting equipment shall be UL listed
and/or FM approved.
8.2 Valves
All valves shall be specifically designed for fire protection service. All valves shall meet
the requirements of NFPA 13.
Drain valves and test valves shall be UL listed and/or FM approved.
8.14 Alarms
Alarms shall meet the requirements of NFPA 13.
An alarm unit includes listed mechanical alarm, horn, or siren or a listed electric gong,
bell, speaker, horn, or siren.
9.0 EXECUTION
All products and equipment shall be installed in accordance with MARAFIQ regulations,
NFPA, the manufacturer's written installation instructions and Project Specifications.
The rack sprinkler system shall be installed in accordance with the applicable NFPA
standards.
Provisions shall be made to facilitate inspection, testing and maintenance as described in
NFPA 25.
Protect all equipment and materials at all times.
Cover and protect equipment and materials from dirt, water, chemical or mechanical damage.
10.0 INSTALLATION
All materials and equipment used in the installation of the fire protection systems shall be new
and the latest design by the manufacturer.
All materials, valves and devices essential to successful system operation shall be UL Listed
and/or FM approved.
System components installed outside, or in the presence of a corrosive atmosphere, shall be
constructed of materials that will resist corrosion or be suitably factory protected from
corrosion.
All fire department connection, coupling and thread type shall be fully coordinated and
matched with Local Fire Department requirements.
All valves, rack sprinklers and system components shall meet the requirements of NFPA 13.
The rack sprinklers selected shall be located and positioned for which they were
designed for.
Keep rack sprinklers with protective caps or bulb shields contained within the caps or
shields during installation.
Take care not to damage the corrosion-resistant coating, when installing corrosion-
resistant sprinklers.
10.5 Piping
Installed piping, valves and fittings shall meet the requirements of NFPA 13 and Project
Specifications.
Use pipes, and fittings that resist corrosion; or apply a protective coating to all
unprotected exposed surfaces of the rack sprinkler system, where corrosive conditions
exist due to moisture or fumes from corrosive chemicals or both.
The water motor alarm shall only be mounted to a rigid wall surface, which will not
permit the striker/gong mount to loosen and fall out of alignment.
Electrically operated alarm attachments shall form a part of an auxiliary, central station,
local protective, proprietary, or remote station signaling system shall be installed in
accordance with NFPA 70 and NFPA 72.
Alarms shall be mounted on the outside of the outer walls of each building.
Outdoor water motor-operated or electrically operated bells shall be weatherproofed
and guarded.
Outdoor alarms attachments shall be listed for outdoor use.
All alarm apparatus shall be located and installed such that all parts are accessible for
inspection, removal and repair; and shall be adequately supported.
Pressure gauges shall be provided in the alarm valve trim to indicate the water
pressure immediately upstream and downstream of the alarm valve. The gauges shall
be provided with an isolation valve for maintenance purposes.
A water flow pressure switch shall be provided in the alarm valve trim to initiate an
alarm during a fire condition. This switch shall be provided with an isolation valve to
allow maintenance to remove the device without affecting the system.
11.0 COORDINATION
Installation of sprinklers shall be coordinated with other work including duct and electric fixture
installation to prevent sprinkler obstructions.
Coordinate the location, signage, keying and access of fire sprinkler shutoff and zone valves.
Coordinate location of each rack sprinkler head with rack supports, lighting and shelves.
Flushing of piping shall be in accordance with NFPA 13. Start flushing at the highest point in
the system to lowest drain point. All portions of the system shall be back-flushed. Flushing
water shall be directed such that it will not cause accidental damage to property or danger to
persons.
13.0 TESTING
All new fire protection systems shall be tested prior to the occupancy of the building or the
area the system is protecting.
Testing of the fire protection systems shall be in accordance with NFPA 13, and Project
Specifications.
Any or all of the system components fail; the specified test shall be retested after corrective
measures have been taken.
The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in accordance
with Project Specifications.
All products shall be handled and stored as recommended by the manufacturer.
Sprinklers must be handled with care.
Sprinklers shall be delivered in their original packages, containers or bundles bearing the
brand name and the name of the material.
Sprinklers shall be stored in a cool, dry place.
Pipe, fittings, valves, alarm valves and sprinkler heads shall be stored with open ends sealed
until removed for installation.
Materials shall be protected from weather, soil; and damage during delivery, storage and
construction.
Any products that are damaged or found not to be in accordance with the specifications shall
be immediately replaced.
15.0 CERTIFICATION
The Contractor shall prepare and submit a set of As-built Drawings and hydraulic calculations
of the system, maintenance and instruction bulletins, and the applicable parts of the
Contractor’s material and test certificates covering material and tests certifying that the work
has been completed and tested in accordance with plans and specifications.
