Revision 3
Include Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for aboveground and underground
piping.
The nitrogen gas maintained in the sprinkler piping system is used to monitor the integrity of
the pipe. If the pipe develops a leak or a sprinkler head is broken, the nitrogen pressure is
reduced and an alarm is given to indicate a low nitrogen pressure condition in the sprinkler
piping system. The Single Interlock Preaction Deluge System will only be activated when a
pilot sprinkler is triggered.
A pneumatic pilot line detection system shall be provided to activate the automatic preaction
deluge system.
The preaction deluge system piping and pilot line piping shall be pressurized with nitrogen
supplied by the site utilities. Upon failure of the site nitrogen system, backup nitrogen
cylinders shall be provided.
Backflow preventers shall be used where potable water could be contaminated through
siphoning or back pressure from fire water piping.
The automatic preaction deluge system shall be designed to avoid undue danger to the lives
and safety of its occupants from a fire.
The system design density and hydraulic calculations shall follow the requirements of NFPA
13 and Project Specifications. The required water supply for each system shall be calculated
back to the source of supply. The required water supply shall include hose allowance as per
NFPA 13.
An automatic preaction deluge system designed by a pipe schedule system shall not be
accepted.
The fire protection water supply lines, controlling devices, protective devices, alarm systems,
supervisory devices and related equipment shall be made compatible so that all equipment
shall function together as specified.
System design and installation shall reflect high quality professional work that properly
accounts for practical maintenance concerns and aesthetic concerns, as well as meets the
design requirements.
The piping system shall be sized in accordance with a hydraulic calculation technique to
ensure availability of flows and pressures required for correct performance of the system.
Each section or area served by an automatic preaction deluge system shall be capable of
being isolated by one water supply valve only. The stop valve in each section shall be readily
accessible, and its location clearly and permanently indicated.
Duration of the firewater supply shall meet the requirements of NFPA 13 and Project
Specifications.
Systems shall be arranged for automatic operation with supplementary manual tripping
means provided, unless otherwise noted.
9.0 PRODUCTS
All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when available,
from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products manufactured out-
of-Kingdom must be approved by MARAFIQ. All products, system components and hardware
shall be in compliance with NFPA 13. Only listed materials and devices shall be used in the
installation of automatic preaction sprinkler system. Components that do not affect system
operation, such as drain valves and signs, shall not be required to be listed.
All products, system components and hardware shall be in compliance with the applicable
NFPA standards and the Project Specifications.
All valves, sprinklers, alarms and any additional fire fighting equipment shall be UL listed
and/or FM approved.
9.5 Valves
All valves shall be specifically designed for the Fire Protection Service. All valves
shall meet or exceed NFPA 13; of type, construction and class.
Drain valves and test valves shall be UL listed and/or FM approved.
9.14 Alarms
Alarms shall be as per NFPA 13.
An alarm unit shall include a listed mechanical alarm, horn, or siren or a listed electric
gong, bell, speaker, horn, or siren.
