LEARNING HEBREW
How-to-start guide, for all levels!

Now, lets start from the very beginning.

For starting from zero (and for brushing up) I finally launched my
20-lesson course Hebrew Crash Course

Home About Team FAQ Cute things HEBREW CRASH COURSE Other projects Blog&News Contacts

C 2011 HebN-w Lab fWDliJ <pin~ ••" to too I

It’s LIKE A TEXTBOOK, but on-line 

In short – it’s a comprehensive basic Hebrew course,
that walks you through the basics, incrementally
building your knowledge of survival vocabulary and the
grammatical apparatus that will help you to tie the
words together.
The goal is, of course, to start speaking - but not with
sentences that you have to memorize and cannot break
apart, but with full awareness of what you say and how
you say it.

http://www.alisa-hebrew.com/ ©
Sometimes, when you hear the same things but said in different
words and explained differently, you suddenly realize that you
know it, right? Therefore, it’s good to learn from different sources.
So let me mention in addition some TEXTBOOKS that are out
there that teach you from zero (recommendations for books
meant for more advanced learners you’ll find later on)
Unfortunately, there is not even one single site or textbook that I
can 100% recommend as being good enough or reliable enough…
Still, there are some textbooks worth mentioning:

PROS CONS

Hebrew Nice textbook, ok for The texts are somewhat

HEBREW w.,,
with ................
PLEASURE , self-study, there are boring…
pleasure keys to exercises.

haYesod A rare textbook It is old... First printed

(available on in… 1972! Which
Amazone), one of means – Hebrew there
the best Hebrew is going to be very old
textbooks ever fashioned…
written, but… look to
the right. Still, in
spite of it, I do *Have a look at a very
recommend reading extensive preview here
the texts there!

Sheat Ivrit Nice textbook, nice - It was written for

texts, exercises, keys Russian-speakers and
to the excursuses, all explanations are in
but… Russian…
- Moreover, the
explanations may also
be not clear enough for
self-study purposes…

TC http://www.alisa-hebrew.com/ ©
* A textbook I DO NOT recommend –

Ivrit Min haHatkhala (‫)עברית מן ההתחלה‬

It may be good-looking, I love the pictures, but,
unfortunately… it is absolutely not suitable for self-
study and even as a teacher I find it very hard to use
materials from it because it is not well-structured.
You can use it as an additional reading material after
you are through the basics, however.

GRAMMAR

Above I listed the most comprehensive courses and books that
can walk you through the basics.
Besides, there are some more
course-like ONLINE LEARNING RESOURCES
that can help learners
FROM ZERO:

1
Most famous: Duolingo Hebrew

It won’t give you much explanations, it gives sense of learning
and accomplishment though. But be careful – learning JUST with
Duolingo is NOT ENOUGH.

Morfix is the best!
http://www.morfix.co.il/

Here is another invaluable resource –

context.reverso
(not only for Hebrew, by the way!):
https://context.reverso.net
Here you can search for words IN CONTEXT!
Yes, sometimes the example sentences may be strange,
but, by and large, it’s the best way to see “the cloud of
meanings” for each word.

And, of course, Google Translate!

Heb -> Eng

You probably think “seriously? what’s new about that?!”

You’ll be surprized – VOICE RECOGNITION!

It may be very useful for… translating the subtitles! It is

much faster this way than looking words in the dictionary
one by one!
(I have to thank my amazing student Klaus for the idea)

OLD TV SKITS

A nice, old, done for TV or VHS series for Hebrew-

learners is called “Hevenu Shalom Aleikhem” or
“Gurevich family”
(the link here is to the first chapter, you’ll find the rest):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAnT-Ds_aZc
It is quite nostalgic, done as they used to do it once,
with some staged story of a family, some grammar
explanations, some cultural knowledge... The only
problem with it – it was done for Russian-speakers and
I definitely couldn’t find one with subs in English… :(

2
Another staged skit made for the new immigrants
is this one with Dudu Topaz –
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulJQAokuaAc
Unfortunately, no subtitles there and he speaks quite
fast… but it’s worth it, the situations are quite authentic
and the language he uses simple and clear!

INTERMEDIATE
Now, after the beginning stage is over, theory and textbooks
are not enough! The most important thing is… PRACTICE!.

So, the question is:

WHERE DO I LOOK FOR NATIVE-SPEAKERS
to practice with?

Here is my favorite: www.italki.com

It is basically a site for searching for teachers (I am there,
too!), but you could also use it for making friends and finding
a free language exchange partners!

This site is also very nice (for searching for language exchange
partners): http://www.conversationexchange.com/

And there is this wonderful site for practicing your writing:

http://lang-8.com/
Highly recommended! Native-speakers check your essays for
free! You can help others with your native language, too, if
you want, of course, but it is not a must  *It demands a
registration, but don’t think twice, it is very friendly!

Nowadays everyone are making films. And we, learners,
can benefit from it tremendously!

as if you’ve entered the schools and visited the houses

TEXTBOOKS
One would think that advanced learners have no need

What do I watch\read\listen to
at a fairly advanced level?

TO WATCH

HUMOR

Understanding humoristic programs in a foreign language

is as challenging as it is rewarding.
One thing I can say for sure – if you understand the jokes
you have surely reached the ultimate level when you
understand not only the language, but also the mentality.
 Here are two shows I recommend:

‫קצרים‬
(comedy show “shorts” – funny 3-5 min sketches about the
Israeli reality, invaluable for learners!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jf3kQnWhIbE&index=
38&list=PL47grc1-nl2bsfvfvr7BGTN1JlJByupAW

‫היהודים באים‬
(funny and very cynical short sketches about Israeli history
and about the Bible – it’s like an encyclopedia of Jewish
history and culture, but funny! Be ready to google a lot! ;) )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyM2tHGz4Rc

Well, may be also ‫הישראליות‬

sometimes in English, sometimes rude,
but usually with subs, funny and very Israeli! 

Some educational programs:

Some selected nice programs for teens:

‫חדשות מן העבר‬
about history
(below – about Ben Yehuda, for example)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzGD14XEMl4

‫ החפרנים‬are great (about science)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgFztlKc0as

And the broader selection from our great

educational TV - ‫!החינוכית‬
https://www.kan.org.il/page.aspx?landingPageid=1083

For grown-ups

The best - an amazing new broadcaster

that took over the Israeli TV – and it’s all on-line!
‫כאן – תאגיד השידור הישראלי‬
Full diversity of topics, many shorts, often with subs, enjoy!
https://www.kan.org.il/

Some “Torani” content - “Weekly portion” - ‫פרשת שבוע‬

(very nice, since it’s short, has video and text as well!)

Best idea for advanced learners –
take on-line COURSES in Hebrew!

2
And another C1 treasure for advanced learners -
professional courses - with subs! Not all for free, the
beginnings are free and even they may be enough –
because they speak fast 

Something TO READ

General

Well, I trust that for paper books you’ll hunt ‫ סטימצקי‬or

‫ צומת ספרים‬when visiting Israel, and while not in Israel
the burning question is – where to find digital books.
Then, if you like a book, at some of them you can order
its’ paper version as well. 

Here are some sites on the example of a book I liked very

much, - ‫נוילנד‬:
E-vrit Getbooks indiebook iCast

Some sites have both e-text and the audio book, this is
really the best combination, worth looking for! Like this
one (nice short stories, by the way) ‫החיים הבלתי אפשריים‬

Children’s books
a huge collection of scanned books with pictures, all
OCRed, but mostly translations
(may be it rather belongs to the intermediate
section, but some books are easy, and some are not
– depends! )

Podcasts!

Here is a huge list of recommended podcasts

(there are also ones in English, but we are
interested in the Hebrew ones, right? ;) )

A very interesting and authentic podcast about

Israeli history – history through humans’ voices
and personal stories.

SPECIAL 1 - TRAVELLING TO ISRAEL

What is the best thing for a Hebrew-learner to do

in order to practice Hebrew while travelling to Israel?

Well, for one, you can continue learning and go to an

ULPAN! (Hebrew-learning course)

People say that Ulpan La-Inyan is good, they have a nice

system as far as I know, but can’t vouchsafe and I suspect it’s
expensive 

There is also UlpanOr I heard of, but I can say nothing about
it yet (let me know if you do!)

More adventurous and interesting can be going to an

immersive Ulpan – here – Kibbutzimer

* Talking about immersion – let me make an exception and

tell you about an immersion program - but NOT IN ISRAEL!
It’s Middlebury School of Hebrew. While I cannot vouchsafe
for the programs listed above, I have an “insider
information” about this one - one of my students went there
and was very excited – and I was excited, too, because I saw
incredible results, this program is really is unique and
incredibly effective, making students fluent in a very short
time! *Warning: it’s very expensive!

Besides, here are two non-standard Hebrew-learning
programs that I warmly recommend! (They are “insider
programs”, meant for new immigrants mostly, so if you are
planning a short visit it may be too spread out for you… but I
had to tell, these are gems!  )

One called exactly “This is Not Ulpan” – because of the

notorious inadequacy of most Ulpanim  These guys will
offer you a variety of real-life experiences, through which
you’ll be learning Hebrew (unlike classical Ulpan, where you
study grammar and do exercises)

And another one is “Hebrew in the Spotlight” – Noa Har-Paz

is doing an amazing thing – she and her team are teaching
Hebrew with the help of acting and theater!

Another great idea – instead of taking classes you can enter

a volunteering program!
There are so many programs for volunteers - from organic
farming (Woof, for example) to volunteering in IDF (Israeli
Defense Army), possibly combined with archeological
diggings! (saw this program here). The variety is huge, I
suggest you roam Google for yourself and find the best
program for you.  Just make sure that it’s not al in English ;)

Besides Ulpanim, I recommend you go to language-exchange
events! Here are two that I know of, if you find more –
please, let me know!

Here is one for Tel-Aviv - https://www.fluentlv.com/

And a similar one in Jerusalem -

https://www.facebook.com/groups/439580269483118/

Another idea is going for a tour with Guy Sharet in Tel-Aviv!

You have been listening for his podcasts, right? So why not
meet him in person? ;)
http://www.streetwisehebrew.com/tours.html

And the last idea is – visit museums! What’s new or

interesting about it? Well, it’s not just about visiting a
museum – you can use it as an excellent learning
opportunity! How? Take a tour in Hebrew, of course! You
won’t need to speak up if you don’t want to and you can
even go to the same tour several times 

Well, this is it… No! Not yet! One last thing – remember your
parents told you when you were a child “don’t talk to
strangers!” ? So now – time to break the rules - TALK to
strangers! Israelis are usually open and talkative, try going to
the ,‫ שוק‬ask your temporary neighbors ,‫מה נשמע‬try to find
out at the bus stop – ‫מתי היה האוטובוס האחרון‬use every
opportunity to speak Hebrew! And of course, take taxi! The
prices are high, but if you consider it a combined price for
having a ride and a Hebrew lesson at the same time – then
it’s quite fair 
