INTRODUCTION

The tourism industry is one of the biggest and most important in the world

and English is the main language of international communication. At this

situation, many students are still lack of knowledge on speaking basic English

language .Most students do not have motivation to study English and didn’t

know the importance of learning it. This study aims to know the benefits of

learning English language as a global language for Tour Guiding students in

Arellano University, It will look forward to the aftereffects of learning English.

Thus, study will help the students to know the importance of having

knowledge in speaking English language and motivate them to start studying

it.

Fluent English communication skills tend to increase employability.

Learning English can give you an excellent tourist management skills. English

justifies its title as the global language by helping people to communicate

effectively despite language differences. Gain valuable experience through

excellent people management skills, which will help you with career

advancement. Tourist prefer tour guides who’s confident in speaking

English.For others, English is like a seasonal language. There is no

motivation to speak continuously. If the Tour Guiding students of Arellano

University doesn't have attention to learn English, they will have difficulties in

the future because only few students can speak English and communicate

internationally.

This study will focus to the result of learning English language for the tour

guiding students in Arellano University, to let the students know the benefits

and clearly understand the said problems and give importance to it.Learning
English is important as it enables the students to communicate easily with

their fellow global citizens .Although learning English can be challenging and

time-consuming, It is also very valuable to learn and can create many

opportunities.

Conceptual Framework

The researchers had constructed the following figure to represent the

importance of having knowledge in speaking English well. This study claims

that learning English language as a global language will have benefit .It will

overlook the aftereffects of helping the students to learn on how to speak

English well.

The concept of the study is shown in Figure 1 wherein the input is based

on the problem of this study. In the process, the researchers applied the

survey questionnaires as an instrument in collecting data. And for the output,


to find out if the Tour Guiding students in Arellano University still have

difficulties in speaking English. Also, to know the importance of learning

English language.

Theoretical Framework

Another problem in learning English is absence of effective and efficient

teaching system throughout academic education in which learning English is

viewed as memorizing a list of words and a set of grammatical rules (Akbari,

2015). Furthermore, the students have lack of many key factors to support

them such as motivational encouragement, learning strategy and other

related variables (Souriyavongsa et al. 2013). The main weakness is low

language proficiency as far as knowledge of language skills and language

learning strategies and knowledge of subcomponents of language are

concerned.. English teaching and learning process is targeted to enable

students to gain the ability to communicate in daily life context. As language

is a mean of communication, students have to be accustomed to speaking

English orally. Their communicative competence has to be developed

through tasks and activities which are carried out during the teaching and

learning process. Considering the fact that the Tour Guiding students are still

having difficulties in speaking English, the teacher has to organize the lesson

based on their needs, interest, and characteristics as well. They need

enjoyable activities, which involves body movement, pictures, real objects,

during the teaching and learning process.

Their lack of self-confidence in using the language is linked to their poor

proficiency in various language skills causing them to become afraid or

embarrassed of making mistakes, similar to findings bySouriyavongsa et al.


(2013). Most of them claimed that they are least confident in oral

communication skill because of their low vocabulary and grammar

knowledge, as well as their pronunciation. In addition, he states that the

benchmark of successful acquisition of language is almost always the

demonstration of an ability to accomplish pragmatic goal through an

interactive discourse with other language speaker.  Learners have pleasure to

learn English learning when they receive internal motivation which predicted

by perceived English language ability and independence. (Wu in Mei, 2013).

Students will pleasure their language learning if they have strong motivation.  

Statement of the Problem

This study focuses on the perspective of selected HE-B Tour Guiding

students of Arellano University Juan Sumulong Campus on the aftereffects of

learning English language well as a global language. The researchers sought

answer to following questions

1.What is the socio-economic status of the respondents?

1.1 Upper Class

1.2 Middle Class

1.3 Lower Class

2.How well does the respondents can speak English Language?

2.1 Can speak English language fluently

2.2 Can speak English language somehow

2.3 Still have difficulties in speaking English language

3.What can you do to enhance your ability in speaking English?

3.1 Reading English Dictionary

3.2 Watching English movies or series


3.3 Search and learn the word I didn’t know

Hypothesis of the Study

Ho-There is no significant relationship on learning English language as a

global language to the speaking abilities of HE-B tour guiding students in

Arellano University

Ha-There is a significant relationship on learning English language as a

global language to the speaking abilities of HE-B tour guiding students in

Arellano University

Significance of the Study

To the students. For them to learn how to enhance their communication

skills, be fluent in English and have awareness. Express themselves much

easier and they can talk with full of confidence. To be effectively learning and

become more productive in terms of communicating, sharing their thoughts

and express their feelings.

To the school. For them to help contribute all the knowledge and

learning with their methods of teaching in university. This can be guides in

way of circulating all the knowledge to all faculty staff or teacher to students.

To the teachers. This can be guide to them on how they will deliver

lessons and how supposed to communicate in English language with the

students to improve communication skills in terms of English language.


Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study was conducted during the second semester of school year

2019-2020 to give importance to the tour guiding students in Arellano

University to learn English as a global language. And also, to determine the

satisfaction of the Senior High School students in learning English as a global

language. And lastly, for the students to be able to know of what is really the

importance of learning English.

The respondents of this research and Grade 11 and 12 Senior High

School Students of Arellano University. Its participants are limited only to so

tour guiding Senior High School students of Arellano University. In order for

us to collect valid data, We will perform a survey questionnaire.

The research is only focus and limited in the analysis of satisfaction of

students in learning English as a global language provided by the school

campus of Arellano University.

Definition of Terms

Communicate- share or exchange information, news, or ideas

Difficulty- The quality of something that make it hard to do

Effectively- In a way that produces a desired result in an effective manner in

an indirect way

Fluent- able to speak a language easily and very well

Global- involving the entire world

Home Economics- perform and provide information services for individuals

Lack- not having enough of something

Results-possible result include advantage or disadvantage to happen


because of something else that happened or was done before.

Tour Guide- a person employed to show tourist around places of interest

Vocabulary- the body of words used in a particular language


REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies.It includes the

ideas, finished thesis,generalization or conclusions.Those that were included

in this chapter helps familiarizing information that are relevant and similar to

the present study.

Foreign Literature

Understanding of performance expectations are keys to the achievement

of tourist satisfaction. Good oral and written communication skills are the top

skills important to hospitality practitioners at different position levels. Good

English communication during the study will add value to students' education.

According to that fact the hospitality program itself will encourage critical

thinking and for example tourism problem solving when it is necessary. In the

tourism industry supply and demand side must communicate perfectly in order

to ensure quality and needed performance standards. In the business tourism

practice oral communication is a bit higher than written communication, but

both categories are rated high. (Kay and Russette: 2010). The authoresses,

through a questionnaire, explore the importance of communication skills

(speaking, reading, listening and writing) in English language among

hospitality employees and students studying business and tourism. The

importance of good cooperation between the language/hospitality teaching

programmes and the Croatia Tourism Authority is a high priority if the

development of steady all-year-round tourism is to be a possibility.  In

concluding, the implications of the findings are discussed and concerns rose
over the need to address evident weaknesses in order to enhance career

options and tourism management in Croatia.

Local Literature

Filipinos become used to the language. In school, teachers and students

converse in English and grow consciousness with the grammar and

pronunciation. In industries environment, English becomes the medium of

communication because it is the language that is comprehensible between

Filipinos and foreigners. According to Claveria (2015) everything is more fun

in the Philippines, including learning English. As observed, the number of

foreign students in the country is essentially growing. Everywhere you see

some students from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and some from the Arab

countries. Our country is not only rich in natural resources and scenic tourist

spots, but we are a people of diverse culture. We may be Filipinos but we

have embraced the English language like ours.

Philippines is an English friendly country, with its people familiar with the

language that it is being used almost every day. Students get used to the

language since it is used every time in class discussion. This method can

prove to be effective when used for a long time. Amidst the errors committed

by students, this method of learning the English language can be fun because

a person will not learn by himself, instead, his classmates and friends can

correct his mistakes and vice versa which can further improve the person’s

skill in speaking the English language (Aguisanda, 2015).Authentic material

means that the materials can be books, charts, graphs, etc., which learners

used are appropriate in the learners’ occupation fields or needs. Purpose


related orientation means that the learners are given some practices through

simulations in handling several conditions to practice their English.(Javid,
