Read this definition for Phrasal verbs:

"A combination of a verb and an adverb or preposition, which has a particular meaning, such as ‘look after’,
‘hurry up’, ‘give in’, ‘chill out’, ‘get away with’ and ‘bring up’. For example in the sentence ‘Don’t tell me how
to bring up my children!’, ‘bring up’ means ‘raise’. An adverb or preposition in a phrasal verb is sometimes

Exercise 2
Read this complementary definition of phrasal verbs (here, multi-word verbs). Why do you think they are so
abundant in The Outsiders?

"The term phrasal verb is used here for verbs followed by one or more prepositions. They are also called multi-
word verbs. The meaning cannot usually be guessed from the meaning of the verb on its own.
These verbs are common in informal writing and speech, but many are used in formal speech and writing."

doing this far east? "Johnny shook his head. "I don't know. But I bet they're looking for us. We picked up their
girls."
"Oh, glory," I said with a groan, "this is all I need to top off a perfect night."
