Thank you for purchasing the
Fairchild Aircraft Metro Technical
Manuals on CD. We hope you find the
Metro Technical Manuals on CD to be
easy to use and helpful in your
business. There are a few things you
should know about the CD.
You must have a working knowledge of your
computer and it s operating system. The
successful use of these electronic manuals
requires you to install and operate software
that is provided.
We have chosen to create these electronic
manuals using Adobe Acrobat software. We
used Acrobat for several reasons:
¥ We could greatly reduce the cost for you
to purchase and maintain the manuals
by reducing our production costs.
¥ The Acrobat Reader can be distributed
to our customers at no charge.
¥ The pages on your computer screen
look exactly like your existing paper
books.
¥ All the words and numbers on every
page are indexed for quick searching.
(The Flight Manuals and Service Info do
not have indices. See their User Guide
for more information.)
¥ The pages can be printed with the same
format as the paper books.
¥ Text and graphics can be copied from
the computer screen and pasted in other
applications.
¥ The Acrobat (.pdf) format gives you a lot
of flexibility in using the technical manual
files.
To insure you have the latest and correct
software, please remove any previous
copies of Acrobat Reader that may be on
your computer. Some versions of Acrobat
Readers do not include the Search Engine .
Install the Acrobat Reader 4.0 provided on
this the Metro Technical Manuals CD-ROM.
The file name is rs40eng.exe. Double click
the file and follow the easy instructions.
The installation will install Acrobat guides
and help files that are available from within
Acrobat. Please review the information,
especially the sections on using the search
functions. The search engine and its
operation are very critical to using these
manuals successfully.
After installing the Acrobat Reader with the
search engine, please open the file called
First_xx.pdf that is on the Metro Technical
Manuals CD-ROM. Click once on the button
that represents the technical manual that
you want to search. Each Metro Technical
Manual has it s own index for searching. You
have the option of searching all the Metro
manuals at the same time or each one
individually. By selecting one of the buttons,
the Acrobat Reader will automatically
connect to the correct Metro technical
manual index. Each button selection will
take you to the cover page and front matter
of the manual. You may click on the go to
previous view button on the toolbar to
connect another index at this time. Each
index that you connect will stay connected.
You are only required to do the connecting
once. You may disconnect an index from
within the search dialog box. See the
Acrobat guide files for instructions on
disconnecting an index.
Click on the icon with the binoculars and
piece of paper. Type a word or
phrase that describes a subject
that you would like to search for
more information. You might use something
simple like tire . Click on the Search
button. The search results will then be
presented to you. Double-click on the file
that you want to read. To return to the
search results click on the search
results button.
Remember that you are doing full text
searches. Using a simple search term like
tire might return a search result of
hundreds of pages. Perhaps you want to
read all the information concerning tires but
most likely you would want to narrow the
search. You might search within the last
results using a term like tire installation .
The secret to quick and successful use of
the Metro Technical Manual on CD-ROM is in
learning how to use the search engine.

The text that you type can be a single word,
a number, a term, or a phrase. It can be a Fairchild Aerospace

any search term that includes and, or, or not
in quotes. You can also use the operators =, Post Office Box 790490

The search results should be familiar to you
if you have used the paper versions of the
Metro Technical Manual. One of the search
results in the list might look like this:

SA227 MM CHAPTER 12 CONTENTS REV 96

• SA227 is the aircraft model

• MM is the book (Maintenance Manual)
• CHAPTER 12 is the ATA chapter-
section-subject standard
• CONTENTS is the table of contents
• REV 96 is the revision number (revision
96)

We do our best to make the Technical

manuals accurate but sometimes mistakes
occur. If you discover a mistake, then please

use the TPDCR form that is enclosed on the
CD. You can fill out the form using your
Acrobat Reader or just print the form and fill
it out. Mail it by post office or attach it to

Search Example #1
Task: Nose Landing Gear Tire Removal and Installation on the SA227 Metro aircraft

We will cover two different ways to search for Nose Landing Gear Tire Removal and Installation
• ATA Chapter Search
• Word Search

1. Insert Metro technical manual CD-ROM into the your computer s CD-ROM drive.

2. In Windows 95/98, select the My Computer icon on your desktop.

3. Select and open the Fairchild CD-ROM icon.

4. Select and open the First_xx.pdf file.

A graphic similar to the following will appear.

5. Click on the Maintenance Manual button. You will notice that the search engine and indexes
will initialize at this time.

• The following screen will appear after you select the Maintenance Manual button.

• The screen above displays the intro of the SA227 Maintenance Manual. This section contains
general information. You will notice that the intro is 17 pages in length. This is the same front
matter as in the paper version of the SA227 Maintenance Manual.

6. Select the Search button on the menu bar.

• The following search box will appear.

• Notice at the bottom of the search box. This search engine is only going to search the 227MM
index.

7. According to the ATA format, tires are located in Chapter 32--Landing Gear . Type chapter 32
in the search box text field.

8. Select the Search button.

• The following screen will appear.

• SA227 MM CHAPTER 32 EFF PGS REV 113 is Chapter 32 of the Maintenance Manual List
of Effective Pages at revision number 113.
• SA227 MM CHAPTER 32 CONTENTS REV 106 is Chapter 32 of the Maintenance Manual
Table of Contents at revision number 106.

9. Select SA227 MM CHAPTER 32 CONTENTS REV 106 and select the View button. Chapter 32
Table of Contents will appear.

• The Nose Landing Gear Wheel Maintenance Practices are located in ATA Chapter 32-40-50.

11. Select the search button. on the menu and enter the following 32-40-50 . Then select the
Search button and the following search results will appear.

2. According to the ATA format, flaps are located in 27-50--Flaps . Type the following in the
search box text field as follows and select the Search button.

• The following search results will appear.

3. Select the SA227 MM CHAPTER 27-50 REV 133 and select the View button. The following
screen will appear on the next page of this example

PRECAUTIONS

The disk records are on the side opposite the label side. Protect the disk from any scratches, dust particles and e v e r y
kind of smears. Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the disk. Do not use solvents. Do not attach labels to either side of the disk.
Use a soft felt tip marker for labeling on the label side of the disk.
