3 Errors faced while Remote Connect/Disconnect
operations
3.1 Immediate Validation Error

If after initiating Remote Connect or Remote Disconnect command, it goes immediately to

Validation Error state, it generally means one of three cases has occurred:

a. There is already some communication in progress for that device and a new command is

initiated by the user, whether the previous communication be in error state or not.

In the below screenshot, there is already a Remote Connect command whose

communication is in progress. It might have faced negative response from HES, but

since it was not discarded, it is still considered to be in progress. So, all commands

initiated after that without first discarding the old one will automatically went to validation

error state.

UPPCL
So, in order to resolve this issue, discard all the commands which have communication in

progress, or are in validation error state, and initiate new command. Process to discard the

command is described further below.

b. Remote Connect command is initiated on an already connected meter.

c. Remote Disconnect command is initiated on an already disconnected meter.

For cases b and c, ensure that the correct command should be initiated, and discard the activity

for the command which has gone into validation error state.

Method to discard the commands is as follows:

1. Search for the meter using account number as detailed in previous steps in Remote

Connect or Remote Disconnect.

2. Then in the above screenshot, click on device hyperlink, which will open the 360 Search

result for Device. There, click on the hyperlink to Device, as pointed in below screenshot,

which will go to the Device page.

3. In the Device page, scroll down to the Device Activities zone, where all previous

communications to the meter will be listed in reverse chronological order, i.e. the oldest

command will be listed in the lowest position in the list. If any Remote Connect or

Remote Disconnect commands are showing to be Communication in Progress or

Validation Error, click on the hyperlink of the command which needs to be discarded,

which will take you to the page of the activity of the command.

4. On opening the Activity page, there will be an option to discard the command on the

upper right-hand side. On clicking the Discard button, a pop-up window will open to

select the reason for discarding the command. Select “Command Failed”, and save.

5. After command is successfully discarded, go back to the device page using the Device

hyperlink in the Activity page

6. Discard all previous open communication and validation error commands until they are

all completed or discarded, as follows:

PROJECT: DOCUMENT TITLE: MDM-HES User Manual Date:
EESL Smart meter AMI solution for 27-05-2019

UPPCL
7. Initiate new Remote Connect or Remote Disconnect Command as per previous

instructions, or by clicking Initiate Command in the Device Activities zone, as pointed

below, and then following previous instructions of Remote Connect/Disconnect.

3.2 Negative Response from HES (Inbound Validation Error)

When a Remote Connect or Remote Disconnect command for a particular meter is initiated

from MDM system, the MDM first sends the corresponding command to the Head-End System

(HES), which communicates with the meter directly and performs the required connection or

disconnection. Then the acknowledgement of the successful completion of the command is sent

from the meter to the HES, which then sends the response to MDM that the command has been

completed.

REV: 1
PROJECT: DOCUMENT TITLE: MDM-HES User Manual Date:

UPPCL
The following screenshot of a completed Remote Connect command displays the process flow:

In the Activity hierarchy, the Remote Connect Command in MDM will have an Outbound

communication to HES (2nd stage of the above hierarchy). After completion of the command,

there will be an Inbound acknowledgement from HES to MDM that the command is completed

(3rd stage of the above hierarchy). After receiving this acknowledgement, the Remote Connect

activity will go from Communication in Progress state to Completed state in MDM, and the

device status will be updated from Disconnected to Connected (and the opposite for Remote

Disconnect).

In case the HES is not able to communicate with the meter for some reason, a negative

response will be obtained from the HES. An example is given in below screenshot:

REV: 1
PROJECT: DOCUMENT TITLE: MDM-HES User Manual Date:
EESL Smart meter AMI solution for 27-05-2019
DOC. NO: LNT/ SWC/EESL PAGE 3 OF 3
UPPCL
The steps to resolve the negative response are as follows:

The Inbound response is showing that the response is in Validation Error state in red. This

generally indicates that the HES is not being able to communicate with the meter. In that case,

do not try to initiate new command immediately, as it will immediately go into Validation Error

state (see section 3.1 of this document), and the new command will have to be discarded.

1. The recommended course of action is to wait for 30 minutes, and Retry the same

command (open the command in Communication in Progress state, by following the

instructions in steps 1-3 in section 3.1)

PROJECT: DOCUMENT TITLE: MDM-HES User Manual Date:

UPPCL
It will open a new Outbound request under the same activity hierarchy, as shown below:

2. If it is completed successfully, then the meter is connected or disconnected (as per the

given command). If it still returns negative response, please contact L&T/LTI support

executives, who will assist to get the issue resolved.

3. Otherwise, first discard the command which has received the negative response, and try

again by initiating new command after 30-45 minutes. If still returning negative response,

please contact L&T/LTI support team, who will assist to get the issue resolved.
