What is History?

The word History was derived in the Greek word “historia” which means
information. History is then a continuous, systematic narrative of past events as
relating to a particular people, country, period, person, etc. This then informs the
present generation of events that happened in the past, when and how it happened.

What is the Nature of History

1.History is a study of the present in the light of the past: The present was
derived from the past, wherein countless evolution of the society took place. One
cannot reach this level of advancement without a progress.

2.History is the study of man: It studies the past activities of man, wherein man
has used their resources to advance their technological capabilities, wage war, etc.

3.History is concerned with man in time: History tracks the events that have
happened associated to man. It dwells on the human development in time.

4.History is concerned with man in space: History talks about nations and
human activities in the context of their physical and geographical environment. It
centers on the interaction of man on his environment and vice-versa.

5.History provides an objective record of happenings: Historians are cautious

on the data that they disseminate and the data they include in the books. Historians
keep the data free from subjective interpretations.

6.History is Multisided: It covers every aspect of man’s life, because all the
aspects are interrelated and one small change can affect the other aspects of man’s
life.

7.History is a dialogue between the events of the past and progressively

emerging future ends: Past events are interpreted and become predictor of new
objectives.

8.History is not only narration but also analysis: History is not limited with
narrative accounts. Data are analyzed in order to explain the occurrence of the
event and its corresponding effect to the society over time.

9.Continuity and coherence are the necessary requisites of history: History

monitors the development of the society, from generation to generation, after
series of event, justifying the essence of continuity.

10.History is relevant: It is the study of the past, only events that influenced the
society are covered and essential to the understanding of the present life.

11.History is comprehensive: History is not limited to one period or one country

alone. It deals with all aspects of human life: political, social, economic, religious,
literary, aesthetic, and physical, giving a clear picture of global linkage.

What is Primary Source?

Primary sources are documents, images or artifacts that provide firsthand

testimony or direct evidence concerning a historical topic under research
investigation. These enables researchers to get as close as possible to what actually
happened during a historical event or time period.

What is a Secondary Source?

A secondary source is a work that interprets or analyzes a historical event or

period after the event has occurred and, generally speaking, with the use of primary
sources. The same document, or other piece of evidence, may be a primary source
in one investigation and secondary in another. The search for primary sources does
not, therefore, automatically include or exclude any format of research materials or
type of records, documents, or publications.
