Layers of Emotion
Painting Rubric

Objectives:
• Choose first emotion;
make a pencil sketch on
practice paper according
to what this emotion
looks like NON-
OBJECTIVELY (ONLY
line/color/shape). NO
recognizable imagery
(i.e. no faces/symbols/
etc.)
• Make the composition
complex and interesting.
• Draw sketch onto
canvas board.
• Paint with acrylic;
incorporate at least three
colors of paint, mix every color, and use color blending techniques.
• After base layer dries completely, apply tape to some areas of the canvas, criss crossing the
tape in your choice of pattern. About HALF of the painting’s surface should be covered with
tape.
• Choose second emotion, different from the first one; make new sketch on practice paper
representing this new emotion non-objectively; draw sketch onto canvas board where there is
no tape. Paint with acrylics, again incorporating at least three colors of paint and color mixing.
• After second layer dries completely, take off tape, and reapply tape in a new pattern. Again,
HALF of the painting should be covered with tape, but the tape should be in a different
formation.
• Choose third different emotion from the first two and repeat process of making a sketch,
painting with at least three colors, and removing the tape once the painting is dry.
• Minimum requirement: 3 layers of painting (but you are encouraged to do more!)
