Your brother David called earlier while you were out buying groceries. He said that he will not
be able to join you and your friends on your trip to the aquarium. He asked you to go on

Hi Farah,
I’m just letting you know that I will not be in for dinner as I will be fetching your father from the

Next week is Mummy’s birthday. I’ve been wondering what kind of present to get her. My mother
is always there for me whenever I need her. I just want to show her how much I love her.
I think I should get her that perfume that she likes: Shazel No 5. She likes the floral scent.
She also likes that it is mild. My mother always uses perfume when she goes out. It makes her feel
confident when she talks to other people.
The other thing I could buy her is a new watch. My father bought her the watch she is
currently using to celebrate their 15 th anniversary. However, it is worn out now. She has never
thought about replacing it because it is of sentimental value to her.

One of Malaysia’s many unique traditions is having an open house. During festivals such as Hari
Raya Puasa and Deepavali, visitors are welcome to feasts hosted by local dignitaries as well as the
35
homes of ordinary Malaysians. The event is open not only to family and friends, but
also complete strangers.
36
It is important for visitors to observe the rules of etiquette when attending an open house.
37 It is polite to stop by any time from 5 minutes after the designated start time to 30
minutes before slated finish time. It is also customary to remove your shoes before entering a
home. This may not be necessary if the event is held at a community centre.
When visiting a home, you should address older men as ‘Uncle’ and older women as
‘Auntie’. If the host is Muslim, males and females sometimes do not shake hands. If you are male,
you should wait and see whether the females sometimes do not shake hands. If you are male, you
should wait and see whether the female proffers38
her hand. It is good manners to
queue up for the food at an open house. You should never push and shove others in the queue.
Neither should you overload your plate, which is
39a sign of greed.
You may wish to give a token of thanks to your host. If you do, you should be aware of the
taboos for each community. For example, you should not give some a Chinese host handkerchiefs,
sandals or sharp object as a gift. 40
