How does gesture drawing teach students to loosen up and draw fast?

Guided:
Show a powerpoint and video about gesture drawing. Explain why gesture drawing is a
good way to practice drawing the human figure. Lead students into discussion about
artwork shown in the powerpoint. Talk about what kinds of lines are used, and what the
artwork makes students feel is going on. Talk about human proportions and how to hold
a pencil when drawing big.

Materials: Drawing pencils and paper

Assessment: following directions, participating in discussion, effort

Activity: Week 1: Learn different ways to hold the pencil correctly when drawing.
Practice together. Start gesture drawing. Each table will have one student switch off
being the model. The model will strike a pose for 5 minutes, students will draw as
quickly as they can, then we’ll switch models when the timer goes off.
