Renaissance Era
The Renaissance period brought with it an interest in nature, humanistic learning
(learning from the behavior of others) and individualism. This was already present
during the medieval period but rose during the 15th and 16th century.

Social and Economic change

● Secularization of daily life (from religious to secular)


● Rise of money credit economy
● Social mobility (or status in society)
Renaissance Drawing
● Drawing during the renaissance era was used as a form of practice before a
painting, sculpture, mosaic or tapestry was made
● Realistic Representation was emphasized.
● Portrait Drawing captured the subjects personality, stature, feelings or spirit. It
was important to capture their essence and tell a story.
● Chiaroscuro was a term that describes emphasis or “light” and “dark” during
the renaissance era. This was widely used in paintings, but was a part of
drawing as well.

● Must capture your likeness, you personality, identity or feelings. Should tell a
story about you.
● Must utilize elements of design including value and proportion
