A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH FOR GRADE 8

I. SUBJECT MATTER: Difference between Adjectives and Adverbs

II. OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:


1. identify an adjective and an adverb,
2. appreciate modifiers in a text; and
3. use adjective and adverb in a sentence.

III. METHODOLOGY

A. Motivation
1. The teacher will post multicolored notes (with words on it) under the chairs and the students will try to
find classmates with the same note color they found and as a group, they will form a sentence
using each word. They will be given 3 minutes to do the task.
2. They will present the sentence they form.
3. The teacher will determine if the sentences were formed correctly.
4. Out of the formed sentences, the teacher will choose one.

B. Review (Bodily Kinesthetic / Musical)

1. Let me see how well you can identify the words in this sentence.

I hear the songbirds.

Where is the pronoun?


Where is the verb?
Where is the noun?

2. What if I change the sentence into this?

I hear the beautiful songbirds.

What do you call the word ‘beautiful’?


What is an adjective?

An adjective modifies a noun or a pronoun.

It answers the questions: ‘what kind?’ ‘which one?’ ‘how many?’ and ‘how much?’

3. Let us play around with the sentence once more. What if I change it this way?

The songbirds sing beautifully.

What is an adverb?

An adverb modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.

It tells how, when, where, how many times and to what extent of an action is done.

C. Lesson Proper (Verbal Linguistic / Logico-Mathematical / Interpersonal)


1. The teacher will project the comparison table on the screen.

The sun is bright. The sun shined brightly.
I had an early prayer. I awoke early to pray.
This past year has been a blessed one. The year flew past.
It was a hard test. I prayed hard that I pass the test.

2. The teacher will divide the class into two groups and he will ask the first group to give 5 adjectives and
the second group will give the adverb form of the adjective they gave. Then, there will be an exchange of
task, the second group will give 5 examples adjectives and the first group will give the adverb form of the
given adjective.

D. Application (Visual-Spatial)

Write the word ‘ADJECTIVE’ on the first strip of paper and ‘ADVERB’ on the second strip of paper.
You have 3 minutes to decorate your respective papers. (After 3 minutes) On the screen, I will show a
sentence and your task is to identify whether the underlined word is an adjective or an adverb by raising
your strips in the air.

V. EVALUATION

Write 10 sentences about the people, places, or things that make your day special on a ½ sheet of paper.
Make sure to one use at least 5 adjectives and 5 adverbs.

Read the literary piece “THE FENCE” by Jose Garcia Villa and identify the different adjectives and
adverbs used in the text.
