NGCP: Power Out

The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) is responsible for maintaining the flow of electricity
from where it is made to where it is needed. But in the past few days, it seems that the NGCP isn’t doing
their job.

Roxas City has been experiencing a series of power interruptions and even blackouts to the whole
province of Capiz. People have showed great frustration as electricity is a dire need especially during this
hot summer season. Many have been blaming the Capiz Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CAPELCO) when the
problem goes beyond them. It turns out that the NGCP is having a lack of supply of energy that isn’t
enough power for the whole region. It seems like Capiz isn’t the only victim of these power
interruptions, but the whole of West Visayas too.

The NGCP should’ve thought of a back-up plan to this situation. They should’ve prepared for this
summer heat and expected that most of our population would be using heavy electricity consuming
appliances such as air-conditionings and electric fans. With a power outage and nothing to combat the
heat, it can become a crucial state for the people. Possibly suffering from dehydration and even heat
strokes. Perhaps the Philippines is still too poor to even afford a simple energy back-up for its people in
need.

Hopefully next time, the NGCP will communicate with the Department of Energy (DOE) to think of a
combat plan to this problem. Maybe think of a way to create more energy that wouldn’t be affected
because of the season, or energy that couldn’t be used up that easily. The NGCP and DOE will then
cooperate with our local electric power regulators like CAPELCO to ensure that the people of each
province are getting the energy they need. The people are willing to help, all it takes is a little push.

Each household in the Philippines is rightfully paying for the electricity they consume. In these trying
times, we should give the people back what they pay for.
