REPORT ON:
TWO PLATE LOAD TESTS AND ONE CBR TEST CONDUCTED AT
KARANJA PORT
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Client Daewoo TPL JV proposed construction of bulk berth at karanja port,
Navi Mumbai as part of Mumbai Trans Harbour Link Project- Package-II.
1.2 For proposed bulk berth, client decided to adopt flexible pavement resting
on/in compacted filled up soil layer at reduced level 6.0 m w.r.t CD adopting safe
bearing capacity value of compacted filled up soil layer equal to 8.0 T/m2.
1.3 To confirm the adopted design bearing capacity of compacted filled up soil
layer at top, client decided to carry out plate load tests and field CBR tests on
compacted filled up soil layer at reduced level 6.0 m w.r.t CD
1.4 The work of conducting plate load tests and CBR tests is entrusted to M/s
Paresh Constructions and Foundations Pvt. Ltd. (PCFPL), Mumbai and
accordingly M/s PCFPL conducted 2 PLT tests and 1 CBR test between 6th & 7th
March 2020.
1.5 This report has been prepared based on Plate Load Tests and CBR test
result incorporating discussion on test result and safe bearing capacity
calculation. Please note that safe bearing capacity recommendations are solely
based on PLT and CBR test results.
1.6 Plate Load Tests and CBR test results are attached as an annexure.
2. METHODOLOGY
2.1.1 Since it is decided to carry out the tests up to maximum loading intensity
of 25.0 T/m2 i.e. 3 times of required bearing capacity, it is decided to use Poclain
machine having self-weight approximately 20 T as a kentledge load instead of
conventional gunny bags platform.
2.1.2 Balance test procedure is adopted as per the guidelines given in IS: 1888
-1982, method of load test on soil.
2.1.4 Following are the specifications of equipment used for the test.
2.1.5 Test commenced by applying initial seating load and then rearranging dial
gauges, loads are given at an equal increment up to maximum load intensity of
25.0 T/m2 on plate. Settlements are measured with four dial gauges for each load
increment. After completion of test, unloading has been done in stages and
corresponding rebounds are measured.
2.1.6 Load settlement graphs along with result sheets are attached as an
annexure.
3.1 Both PLT and CBR tests have been carried out on leveled compacted
filled up soil layer. Photograph showing site condition is given below.
3.2.1 Both Plate Load Tests has been carried out up to load intensity of 25.0
T/m2 by giving equal load increments and for each load increment settlements
are measured with four dial gauges. For both tests, pressure vs settlement
graphs are drawn and given below.
3.2.2 PLT-1
3.2.3 PLT-2
3.2.4 From graphs it can be seen that at PLT 1 location maximum settlement is
only 3.58 mm whereas at PLT 2 location maximum settlement is 8.31 mm.
Further it can be seen that at both location failure point is not reached.
3.2.5 Now considering maximum loading intensity i.e. 25.0 T/m2 as an ultimate
bearing capacity and adopting factor of safety equal to 3, net safe bearing
capacity can be worked out to qsafe = 25.0 / 3 = 8.33 T/m2.
4.1 Based on the Plate Load Test results, net safe bearing capacity equal to
8.0 T/m2 can be safely adopted.
4.2 Based on field CBR test results, design CBR value equal to 10 % can be
safely adopted.
