INFORMATIVE SPEECH

Good morning to everyone.

I would like to ask you something, what comes in your mind when you hear about
social media? It is very complex wherein, very few people understand that they are
the co-creators of social media involuntarily, which means that when you simply
place your comment under a post on Facebook, you become a developer of social
media. When you write a new post in your blog, you broaden the content of the
Internet. When you play an online video game, you’re a part of social media too. In
brief, every action in the Internet influences the current condition of social media,
even if it’s just a small thing, it still influences it. So today, I, Nicole Cendaña, would
like to inform you about the role of social media in our life. What do social media
really means? Let us observe this problem in detail.

Social media has not been just a platform for easy and simple advanced online
marketing but it has become a revolution of our century. It is a complex of computer-
mediated tool that provide people with the opportunity to create, store, exchange,
share and process different types of information in social networks or any other
virtual communities. Year after year, the limits of social networks broaden with the
instruction of technologies, among which one of the strongest became Internet. It
splits the borders between nations and countries and reduces distances and time.
With the help of this, we are free to share any information of particular interest
between people of the same interests at any time we would like. But, how free are
we to express our position at social networks? The most important classification of
social media is that, there are common projects that connect people, who share the
same interests in business, reading, entertainment, education, cinematography and
art. There are also blogs and microblogs devoted to the specific problem or set of
problems. And finally, there are social networks and communities in virtual reality.

We cannot underestimate the value of social media as a rich source of entertainment

and promotion of the elements related with this field. New songs, movies, video clips
and books receive popularity in a few hours after their official release. When
thousands of people share a post related to the particular music album or movie,
millions of users know about it. Very soon, they spread this information to their
friends and other members of the selected virtual communities and networks. In 24
hours after release, a video clip can receive more then 1 million views on Youtube.
Social media are also important for fashion and branding. New brands of clothes,
new hairstyles, new genres of music, art, new kinds of gadgets, etc. can gain their
fame due to the hard work of the marketers who use the means of social media
skillfully. They make people want these new fashionable and trendy items.

I completely agree that social media provide people with vast opportunities. We can
reconnect with lost loved ones and we can keep in touch with the military family
overseas and out of town family, social media let us stay connected with others
although the distance is keeping us away from them. We can stay informed with the
happenings about the world by following news stations pages on Facebook and
Twitter, and it saves time from reading a whole article. It transmits news faster than
television, radio and press do because nowadays, every professional journalist has
an account in social networks. It is a great and cheap way to promote business using
adverting and marketing tools, with this, many people will now be informed about
something trendy and they can now simply find sites wherein they can buy things for
themselves easily. And it lets you find out which companies are hiring or find people
to hire for your own company. Social media guarantee the supply of authentic and
firsthand information in the shortest terms. But on the other hand, it also comprises
some negative effects. It involves security concerns. Someone can hack into your
account and get your personal information and you can possibly be a victim of
identity theft, so be alert and do not put any private information on the Internet. With
the help of social media, fake Facebook accounts are created to scam people by
pretending to be an organization and taking money or someone can pretend to be
someone else so they can get them and let them talk to them. Cyberbullying is one
of the major concerns in social networks. It includes mean text messages or emails,
rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites, and embarrassing
pictures, videos, websites or fake profiles. Employees may waste valuable time
using social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter. Like the teenagers
today, they consume their time by surfing the Internet, chitchatting with their friends,
watching online, playing games, and posting status and pictures, instead of spending
their time studying lessons for the next day, helping their parents to do the chores or
having quality time with their family. It is possible to state that social media rule the
world and make the world go around. Internet has invaded our minds. The problem
is that Internet changes rapidly, reinforcing the digital meaning of our lives. It enjoys
its rapid development. All social media users are involved in this development, as
they expect a lot for social network services.

Internet is one of the most outstanding human achievements, due to its development
in the late twentieth century; mankind is now enjoying easy and unlimited access of
information than all the libraries combined on earth. Information has become
available literally in the palm of our hands. Still we must ask – with the Internet, we
can say that we are better off now than before the Internet ever existed? When you
really think about it, we notice the irony that despite the vastness of the information
we can readily have, we do not automatically become knowledgeable or even wise.
It is not enough to have information if we do not know how to make sense of that
information. On the other hand, too much information can also be a bad thing. When
you have information overload, it can get in the way of making good decisions. That
is why getting relevant information is one of the basics in knowing something. We
are a new generation obsessed with technology and spend so much time on the it so
it is our responsibility to use it wisely and knowledgably. “The way of the world is
meeting people through other people,” that is why social network is a positive and
effective factor in our lives. And that’s all for today, thank you for lending me your
ears.
