Name: Formed Marmon/70-degree Flare for Aftertreatment Body Joint Forming

Identifier: Specification: Manufacturing

Description
The specification covers the geometric requirements of a full marmon and mating flare. The
typical application of these geometries is on bodies of exhaust aftertreatment products in order
to provide a serviceable joint.
Before applying the geometry captured in this standard to new products and/or platforms,
especially for joint diameters not currently defined (refer to Table 1 and Table 2), consult the
owner of this document.

Name: Formed Marmon/70-degree Flare for Aftertreatment Body Joint Forming

Identifier: Specification: Manufacturing

1 Scope
This specification is to be used in conjunction with engineering drawing specifications
which define product that includes the geometry captured herein. This standard alone
does not define an entire product, but is to be used as supplemental definition to
complete a product specification.
Before applying the geometry captured in this standard to new products and/or
platforms, especially for joint diameters not currently defined (refer to Table 1 and
Table 2), consult the owner of this document.
The dimensioning and tolerancing defined within this standard shall be interpreted per
ASME Y14.5-2009.
Guidance on inspection details, such as CMM programming, can be provided by the
appropriate Cummins SQIE.
The words “shall” and “must” in this document indicate mandatory requirements. The
word “should” indicates a preferred approach.

2 Purpose
This specification provides the necessary dimensions required to manufacture a full
marmon and flare into sheet metal bodies and large diameter tubes of exhaust
aftertreatment product. The full marmon and flare geometries mate to form a
serviceable body joint or inlet/outlet assembly connections when paired with the
accompanying hardware captured herein.
The geometry and accompanying hardware captured in this standard have been shown
to geometrically fit together, but have not been validated for application in all products
universally. Products applying this geometry are to have verification and validation
data (new or reused) as evidence of meeting associated technical requirements.

Figure 1, in conjunction with Table 1, defines the overall geometry and diameters of
the formed marmon. Table 1 captures associated diametrical values for differing joint
diameters applied to various body sizes. Detailed geometry of the formed marmon
angles, radii, and profile is defined within Figure 2.

NOTE 1: Datum A is the axis of the outer diameter of the axially-longest

diametrical feature of the part. For many parts, this will be the
Body OD as shown in Figure 1. For parts with multiple
diametrical features, as depicted in Figure 4, the longest feature
may not be what is typically referred to as the body diameter.
NOTE 2: Datum D is a simulated plane established by three points
equally spaced around the circumference of the part as shown
in Figure 3. Axial location of each point is the intersection of the
outer diameter of the feature that establishes Datum A (e.g.-
Body OD) and the angular surface as established in the line
profile of that cross-section as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 4.

7 Repair of Split Seam Weld

If forming of the body causes the body seam weld to split, it must be welded back
together and ground smooth with the parent material surface on both sides of the flare,
or the OD surface of the formed marmon. See CES-S-MANF-13 for additional
requirements of repair welding.

8 Allowable Material Thinning

The minimum material thickness allowed by the forming process is 1.43 mm
(0.0563 inches). This allowable thinning requirement supersedes the requirements
captured within CES 16736 for material in the formed marmon and flare geometry.

9 Reference on Engineering Drawing

Specifications
9.1 For new engineering drawings, CES-S-MANF-18 geometry is to be specified on the
product drawing as shown in Figure 7.
Figure 7: Engineering drawing call-out

“[###.#]” in the dimensions shown in Figure 7 is to be replaced with the actual value
of the bead/flare OD, and the # in “SEE NOTE #” is to be replaced with the actual
number of the corresponding note on the drawing. The corresponding note on the
drawing, as written below, shall be accompanied by a Key Instruction symbol as
shown (refer to CES-S-ADMN-2).
▲#) FORMED END(S) SHALL MEET CES-S-MANF-18.
A) REFER TO FORMED MARMON GEOMETRY WITH BEAD OD AS
SHOWN.
B) REFER TO 70° FLARE GEOMETRY WITH FLARE OD AS SHOWN.
The formed marmon and flare geometry aspects of the above note shall be applied as
needed with respect to the product being defined (i.e.- not all applicable product will
need both marmon and flare geometries).
NOTE: The diameter of the body/tube to which this geometry is being
applied is to be defined on the engineering product drawing.
This standard does not define the specific nominal body
diameter or its allowable variation.
