INTRODUCTION

4|Page
Our basic aspirations in life are happiness (mutual fulfillment) and prosperity (mutual
prosperity). Happiness is ensured by the relationships with other human beings and prosperity
is ensured by working on physical facilities. Relationship refers to the interpersonal
relationships that a person builds in his/her life – at home, at the workplace and in society.
Physical Facilities includes the physiological needs of individuals and indicates the
necessities as well as the comforts of life. It means the feeling of having or being able to have
more physical facilities than is needed.

Today we are unable to have fulfilling relationships all the time: in family, outside family,
and as a society – in the world at large. If there is a problem in a relationship, we feel uneasy,
and it bothers us. Even if we are interacting with someone, and something we said or did
offends them, it makes us uneasy; i.e. we want mutual fulfilment in relationship. Similarly,
we want to feel prosperous, but end up working only for accumulation of wealth. We want to
enrich nature, but are exploiting it, destroying it. But our natural acceptance is that we want
to live in harmony with nature. The reason behind these problems is that we have to focus on
one more aspect, i.e. right understanding.

RIGHT UNDERSTANDING :

Right Understanding refers to higher order human skills – the need to learn and utilize our
intelligence most effectively. In order to resolve the issues in human relationships, we need to
understand them first, and this would come from ‘right understanding of relationship’.
Similarly in order to be prosperous and to enrich nature, we need to have the ‘right
understanding’. The ‘right understanding’ will enable us to work out our requirements for
physical facilities and hence correctly distinguish the difference between wealth and
prosperity. With nature as well, we need to understand the harmony in nature, and how we
can complement this harmony.

Thus we can say that when we use right understanding with relationships it gives us mutual
fulfilment because if we have right understanding, then we can be happy in ourselves and
work to have fulfilling relationships with humans and mutual prosperity with nature. If we do
not have the right understanding, then we have problems. Thus, our happiness depends on the
fulfilment of these basic requirements.

RELATIONSHIP AND PHYSICAL FACILITIES :

There is a general belief that relationships can be achieved through physical facilities and so
all our efforts goes into accumulation of physical facilities, which in the end does not result
5|Page
in fulfilling the basic values of relationship. This can be explained well with an example. We
all try to get respect (and also reciprocate) through physical facilities but we fail. We can
never ensure the continuity of respect. At best what we get is a temporary feeling of respect
and even in that somewhere deep within we are aware of its non-permanency. We are also
aware of the fact that the respect given to us is not for our individuality but for the physical
facilities we own.

On the basis of physical facilities one cannot ensure a relationship (and its continuity). This is
because the feelings that come due to physical facilities does not have a continuity in them.
For example one may wear a pair of expensive clothes to get respect. The other person might
even appreciate them for the first time he meets them, but on second meeting he may not
even notice their’s clothes. Such an act will therefore leave one perturbed and confused and
as a result one may arrive to a conclusion that there would be unlimited amount of clothes to
ensure the feeling of respect from him. This would unknowingly put someone into the cycle
of consumerism.

Physical facilities can at best influence (or sometimes even dominate) the other person, but
they can never ensure a feeling of assurance in a relationship. Absence of this assurance
always leads to an element of doubt. This doubt is the seed of fear, which ultimately leads to
our unhappiness. What is really required in a relationship is this feeling of assurance (that the
other is for my happiness), and this assurance gives us happiness and its continuity. Wherever
the feeling of assurance is lacking or there is a relationship based on conditions it gives rise to
doubt, which leads to fear.

To feel assured in a relationship one must understand the basic values in a relationship,
evaluate them and express them. This leads to happiness in oneself which in turn leads to
happiness in the other. This is what is called justice in a relationship. When we try to
understand relationship we find that there are basically 9 values in relationship, namely :-

 Trust ( vishwas )
 Respect ( sammaan )
 Affection ( sneh )
 Care ( mamta )
 Guidance ( vatsalya )
 ( shraddha )
 Glory ( gaurav )
 ( kritagyata ) and
 Love ( prem )

These values are called sthapit (established) values as they are there. We always have an
acceptance and expectation of them. We don’t have to create these values, only understand
them and express them. To understand relationship and its values it becomes essential to first
understand a human being. A human being is a co-existence of consciousness and body and
when we understand this co-existence we realize that the relation is between consciousness
and body and not between two bodies.

6|Page
Trust is regarded as the base value. This is because unless we have the feeling of trust in a
relationship we cannot think about other values. Trust basically means to feel assured. To feel
assured that the other person is for my happiness, just the way we are for his. If we ask
ourselves and if we refer to our natural acceptance (sahaj swikriti), we find that we want to
live happily and we also want to help the other live happily. Similarly, the other would want
to live happily and also help someone to live happily. When such a feeling comes, then we
feel assured towards the other or in other words we trust the other.

Similarly respect (sammaan) is when we try to evaluate the other person on the basis of his
consciousness (I). We find that in terms of goal, means to achieve the goal, capacity to
achieve the goal both the I’s are the same. And so in that respect we are like one another. On
that basis we can rightly evaluate the other ( his intention and competence ) and thus have a
feeling of respect for him. Once the feeling of trust and respect are ensured, then we can go
about ensuring other values in the relationship. And therefore we truly become competent for
the relationship. Instead of expecting the feelings, the values from the other, for the first time
we are in a situation where we can offer these feelings to the other.

So the basis of relationship is not physical facilities but the understanding of relationships.
When we understand the relationship, we can then go about fulfilling it and then for the first
time we can get an idea of how much of physical facilities is required and to ensure that
together we can put our effort and work on nature. For the first time we can produce more
than what is required and thus have a feeling of prosperity.

LIVING IN HARMONY AT ALL LEVELS OF LIVING WITH THE

HELP OF RIGHT UNDERSTANDING :
1. At the level of Myself: Self-Exploration with the help of Natural Acceptance and
Experiential Validation helps to develop a sense of Right Understanding. This right
understanding helps me to understand myself clearly, and helps me to develop a feeling of
Satisfaction , Prosperity and Happiness(Harmony) in Myself.

2. At the level of Family: Right understanding helps me to understand others feelings and
expectations in a better way. This ensures harmony in family.

3. At the level of Society: Our family is a part of a large group of people called the Society.
As we understand our relationships with others in our family, we also start understanding
others in the society and can maintain fulfilling relations with everyone.

4. At the level of Nature/ Existence: We live in a large eco-system called Nature. Existence
refers to all the things that exist in Nature. Once we learn to maintain harmony with the
society, we also develop a feeling of concern towards the plants, trees, animals etc. in Nature.
Hence right understanding leads to mutual fulfillment with Nature.

7|Page
IMPORTANCE AND NEED FOR RIGHT UNDERSTANDING :
Right Understanding helps to create harmony at all four levels of human living. Right
Understanding enables us to –

 Resolve the issues in human relationships

 Be prosperous
 Enrich Nature
 Work out our requirements for physical facilities
 Correctly distinguish between wealth and prosperity
 Understand the harmony in Nature

Right Understanding forms the basis on which we can work for relationships and also acquire
Physical Facilities.

CONCLUSION
8|Page
Today's education, in its widely prevalent form, is not able to adequately empower students
to think independently. Even at the level of higher education, mere imparting of skills does
not fulll this requirement. Technology only tells us how to do things which we want to do.
However, without an understanding of what to do & and why and that of what is of value to
the individual and to the society, the students cannot become proactive in their social
environment. Instead, in the absence of a proper understanding, the student community tends
to get oriented with the defaults in the society viz., emphasis on supercial and non-essential
glamour, consumerist lifestyle, and a false sense of satisfaction (or dejection) in competition
and one-upmanship. To fulll our basic desire of continuous happiness and prosperity, one
need to have holistic education with consists of :-

(1) right understanding,

(2) relationship and
(3) physical facilities in the right order.
We need to understand the harmony at all levels of our living‚ ourselves, family, society and
nature/existence. The need for right understanding and relationship is what distinguishes a
human being from an animal. Fulllment of relationships based on right understanding leads to
mutual happiness. Fulllment of need for physical facilities through nature fullling production
activities, (both identied on the basis of right understanding) leads to mutual prosperity. To
live only for physical facilities is called‚ animal consciousness‚ while to live with all three:
right understanding, relationship and physical facilities leading to mutual happiness and
mutual prosperity is called‚ human consciousness.
