Swamp Test:

Scope: The object of this test is to ensure that the boat will remain afloat, stable, upright
at normal trim and with at least 10 % reserve buoyancy after it has been flooded.

Procedure: The boat hull with bulkhead, frames etc. shall be put on water in free floating
condition. This test shall be carried out only for the first boat of the particular contract.
The boat is to be fitted with sufficient buoyancy material to enable the satisfactory
swamp test to be undertaken. The quantity and arrangement of buoyancy proposed shall
be to the satisfaction of IRS and forwarded to the owner for approval. This ensures that
there is a positive freeboard all round the boat when it is swamped, this enabling it to be
pumped or baled out.

When swamped, the boat should be stable, to have 10% reserve buoyancy and should not
have excessive heel or trim.

The report of swamp test is made as below:

a. The weight of boat as prepared for swamp test (without compensation ballast).
b. Calculation of weights of compensation ballast and position of its C.G
c. Draughts of boat just prior to test (with compensating ballast onboard)
d. Draughts of boat with addition of 10 % of weight of boat as ballast.
e. SG of water in which swamp test was conducted.
f. SG of water used to swamp the boat.
g. An amount of total buoyancy provided is the boat by means of buoyancy tanks in
cubic meter.
