Animals are used to develop medical treatments, determine the toxicity of medications, check the safety of products
destined for human use and other biomedical, commercial, and health care uses. Research on living animals has boon
practiced since at least 500 BC.
Those who agree with animal testing usually argue that animal testing has contributed to many life-saving cures and
treatments. The California Biomedical Research Association states that nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100
years has resulted directly from research using animals.
Their other argument is that animals are appropriate research subjects because they are similar to human beings in many
ways. Chimpanzees share 99% of their DNA with humans, and mice are 98% genetically similar to humans. All
mammals, including humans, are descended from common ancestors, and all have the same set of organs (heart, kidneys,
lungs, etc.) that function in essentially the same way with the help of a bloodstream and central nervous system.
However, people who disagree with the animal testing point out that animal testing is cruel and inhumane.
According to Humane Society International, animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force-feeding,
forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, the infliction of burns and other
wounds to study the healing process, the infliction of pain to study its effects and remedies, and “killing by carbon dioxide
asphyxiation, neck-breaking, decapitation, or other means."
They further argue that animals are very different from human beings and therefore make poor test subjects. The
anatomic, metabolic, and cellular differences between animals and people make animals poor models for human beings.
Paul Furlong, Professor of Clinical Neuroimaging at Aston University (UK) states that “it’s very hard to create an animal
model that even equates closely to what we're trying to achieve in the human.”
It is obvious that animal testing is permissible as long as it is not conducted on a large scale. In-fact, people need
animals as their objects for fulfilling their needs to live well. It will really endanger the ecosystem that may eventually
impact us as the ones if the animal testing is not conducted thoughtfully and proportionally. Last but not least, herbal
alternatives are already out there to replace the use of animals' organs for our medical needs.
How do you conclude about the writer’s state towards the issue?
The writer tends to disagree with animal testing.
The writer tolerates animal testing on a large scale.
The writer inclines to be on the animal testing side.
The writer is in favor of the reduction of animal testing.
The writer is towards the perpetuation of animal testing.
One of the smallest sea mammals, the sea otter has mastered the shallow coastal waters of the Northern Pacific
Ocean. It lives most of its life in the water, where it feeds on sea urchins, abalone, mussels, clams, crabs, snails, fish,
octopuses, and other sea creatures.
The sea otter belongs to an exclusive club of tool-users that includes only a small number of animal species, such
as primates, elephants, and few birds. Diving more than 300 feet to obtain food, the sea otters| may bring a clam or other
mollusca to the surface along with a rock. Floating on its back, it rests the rock on its chest and repeatedly bangs the clam
against the rock, until it opens. After the meal, the sea otter will roll oven to wash bits of shell and food off its fur.
Mothers raise their young totally offshore. A mother's body serves as a bed, playpen, dining room, and diving
platform for the young pup as it learns the ways of the ocean. To keep her young from floating away, a mother will wrap
kelp around herself and her pup.
On the International Day in Support of the Victims of Torture, UN Secretary- General Antonio Guterres has urged
all states to end impunity for torture.
"The prohibition of torture is absolute - under all circumstances. Yet this core principle is undermined every day
in detention centers, prisons, police stations, psychiatric institutions and elsewhere,' he said in a statement on Wednesday.
The occasion, which falls on June 26 every year, is aimed at honoring victims of torture and reiterating global
commitment to eradicating the crime. Guterres said he was encouraged that the world was moving towards universal
ratification of the 1984 UN Convention against Torture (CAT).
But states needed to ensure their national laws are in line with the convention in order to move from prohibiting
torture from "principle to practice", he said. Some 166 countries have ratified the convention, making it one of the most
widely ratified international conventions. However, despite torture being condemned and criminalized widely, human
rights experts say very few countries actually prosecute the offence.
CAT defines torture as ’any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally
inflicted for such purposes as obtaining information or a confession or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind,
when such pain is inflicted by a public official or any person acting in an official capacity." Crucially, it also obliges states
to investigate and prosecute torture, regardless of where the offence occurred. But that happens only rarely, said experts.
Why does Antonio mention “detention centers, prisons, police stations and psychiatric institutions” in the second
paragraph?
To let the readers know where torture is strictly prohibited.
To provide examples where torture is usually committed.
To argue some places in which torture is rarely done.
To prove Some places in which torture is always committed.
To state the area where torture is originated.
London, United Kingdom- Thousands of people have descended on London to demand legislators take bolder
action to end the United Kingdom's contribution to climate change.
More than 100 environmental, conservationist, student and interfaith groups took part in a mass lobby around
Londons Houses of Parliament on Wednesday, from where participating MPs were ferried by rickshaw to their
constituents, gathered in a nearby park and along Lambeth Bridge to the South Bank.
Many had travelled to London in the morning to deliver a message to the UK government that the British public
demands swifter action to tackle the climate emergency. More than 200 MPs heeded the call.
Titled 'The Time is Now', the event was organized by The Climate Coalition and Greener UK, two groups
representing leading environmental organizations such as the WWF, RSPB and Friends of the Earth with millions of
members across the country, as well as aid agencies and women's groups.
East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Governor Viktor Bungtilu Laiskodat has agreed to lend Timor Leste a helping hand as
the neighboring country pleads for assistance from Indonesia to quarantine its citizens airlifted from corona virus-stricken
China, an NTT administration official said.
"I've informed the governor of the 17 Timor Leste nationals who are due to be repatriated from China and he said
he was willing to quarantine them in NTT; Marius Ardu Jelamu, the provincial administration
spokesperson, said on Wednesday evening.
Marius said the administration was ready to help Dili put their citizens into quarantine in NTT should President
Joko "Jokowi" Widodo instruct them to do so.
The governor had ordered the NTT Health Agency and the director of WZ Johannes General Hospital in the
provincial capital of Kupang to set up a temporary shelter at the Naimata Mental Hospital for the Timor Leste returnees,
he added.
Timor Leste Planning and Strategic Investment Minister Xanana Gusmao previously said his country had
requested assistance from Indonesia for the quarantine on Bali of 17 of its citizens awaiting repatriation from China,
saying that Timor Leste lacked the proper infrastructure and equipment to handle corona virus cases.
The Bali provincial administration confirmed that Timor Leste, through the Indonesian Embassy in Dili, had
asked for Indonesian permits and assistance to quarantine 17 of its citizens on the island. However, the administration on
Monday rejected Timor Leste's request, (rfa)

According to the given data, oil was the main energy Source in the USA which was 42V. in 198o, The second
largest energy source in this decade was the natural gas which Supplied 26% of total energy in the Same period.
Then coal Supplied more than 20 percent energy demand in the USA while hydroelectric power and Nuclear
power both Supplied 5% of the total energy.
The Nuclear power produced one-tenth of total energy demand and that was almost doubled than it was in the
previous decade. The hydroelectric power as an energy Source remained unchanged as it provided 57 of total
energy demand in this decade also. The other main sources of energy in the USA, coal and natural gas, remained
almost unchanged in this decade. Finally, the use of oil as an energy Source reduced to 337, which was almost
107 less than the previous decade but remained the largest source albeit the reduction in this 90s decade.
The pie charts show data on the main energy sources in the United States of America for two decades. As is
presented in the pie charts, oil was the main energy Source for the USA both in the 80s and 90s. Around one-
fourth of energy in the USA came from natural gas in these decades. The usage of nuclear power as source of
energy was doubled in one decade while surprisingly, the production of energy from hydroelectric power
remained the same.

SYDNEY (AFP-Jiji)—Women footballers playing for Australia's national team will earn the same as their male
counterparts under a deal unveiled Wednesdayand hailed as landmark for gender equality in sports
Under a new centralized contract system announced by Football Federation Australia (FFA), Matildas stars, such
as Sam Kerr and Ellie Carpenter, will be paid an equal amount as big-name Socceroos like Aaron Mooy and Mat Ryan.
They will also be afforded business class flights to international fixtures and tournaments.
The breakthrough will be a big boost for America’s women footballers, who have filed an equal pay lawsuit
against the U.S. Soccer Federation due to be heard in May next year. The United States triumphed at the Women’s World
Cup in France this year with chants of “equal pay" ringing out after they defeated the Netherlands in the final.
“Football is the game for everyone, and this new collective bargaining agreement is another huge step toward
ensuring that we live the values of equality, inclusivity, and opportunity," said FFA chairman Chris Nikou.
Under the four-year deal, through the next World Cup cycles, the Socceroos and Matildas will receive a 24
percent share of national team revenues, rising by 1 percent each year. In other words, the better they do, the more they
get paid.
FFA chief David Gallop said it was the “Socceroos’ choice to share the revenue.

were outside of the store or the house. We couldn’t “call it" while we were still inside.
Sometimes we would determine who got to sit in the front by whoever touched the car first. I inevitably lost in
this one because my brother was older and more athletic, and therefore quicker. So, he would tag the car first.
Then, the other way we would decide who got the front was by arguing over whose turn it was. Of course, we
always thought it was our own turn. So, we'd argue about it until one of us gave in, or my mom got frustrated enough to
make one of us sit in the back.
Kids nowadays don't even know what they are missing. For my brother and me, fighting over the front seat was

Once upon a lime, there was a woman who had been lost in the desert for three whole days without water. Just as
she was about to collapse, she saw what appeared to be a lake just a few hundred yards in front of her. "Could it be? Or is it
just a mirage?” she thought to herself.
With the last bit of strength she could generate, she quarreled toward the lake. Quickly she learned that her prayers
had been answered. It was no mirage—it was indeed a large, spring-fed lake full of fresh water- more fresh water than she
could ever drink in her lifetime. Yet, while she was literally dying of thirst, she couldn't bring herself to drink the water. She
simply stood by the water’s edge and stared down at it.
There was a passerby riding on a camel from a nearby desert town who was watching the woman's bizarre behavior.
He got off his camel, walked up to the thirsty woman, and asked, "Why don’t you have a drink. Ma’am?”
She looked up at the man with an exhausted, DISTRAUGHT expression across her face and tears welling up in her
eyes "I am dying of thirst," she said, "but there is way too much water here in this lake to drink. No matter what I do, I can't
possibly finish it all.”
The passerby smiled, bent down, scooped some water up with his hands, lifted it to the woman's mouth and said,
"Ma’am, your opportunity right now, and as you move forward throughout the rest of your life, is to understand that you
don’t have to drink the whole lake to quench your thirst. You can simply take one sip just one small sip... and then another if
you choose. Focus only on the mouthful in front of you, and all your anxiety, fear, and overwhelm about the rest will
gradually fade.”

Thousands of egg-shaped balls of ice have covered a beach in Finland, the result of a rare weather phenomenon.
Amateur photographer Risto Mattila was among those who came across the "ice eggs" on Hailuoto Island in the
Gulf of Bothnia between Finland and Sweden.
Experts say it is caused by a rare process in which small pieces of ice are rolled over by wind and water. Mr.
Mattila, from the nearby city of Oulu, told the BBC he had never seen anything like it before.
I was with my wife at Mananiem Beach. The weather was sunny, about -1C and it was quite a windy day." he told
the BBC.
“There we found this amazing phenomenon. There were snow and ice eggs along the beach near the water line."
Mr Mattila said the balls of ice covered an area of about 30 meters. The smallest were the size of eggs and the
biggest were the size of footballs.
That was an amazing view. I have never seen anything like this during 25 years living in the vicinity." Mr. Mattila
said.
“Since I had a camera with me, I decided to preserve this unusual sight for posterity."
BBC weather expert George Good fellow said conditions needed to be cold and a bit windy for the ice balls to
form.
What do you think this news is about?

Tsunamis are giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the sea. The waves travel inland, they
Acceptable
build up to higher and higher heights as the depth of the ocean decreases. The speed of tsunami waves depends on ocean
depth rather than the distance from the source of the wave. Tsunami waves may travel as fast as jet planes over deep
waters, only slowing down when reaching shallow waters.
The tsunami is also often mistaken as a tidal wave. This is because when it reaches the mainland, this wave is more
like a high tide than usual resemble waves that reach the shore naturally by the wind. However, the actual tsunami wave
has nothing to do with the events of the tide. Therefore, to avoid misinterpretation, oceanographers often use the term
seismic sea waves to refer to the tsunami, which is scientifically more accurate.
Tsunamis occur when a major fault under the ocean floor suddenly slips. The displaced rock pushes water above it
like a giant paddle, producing powerful water waves at the ocean surface. The ocean waves spread out from the vicinity of
the earthquake source and move across the ocean until they reach the coastline, where their height increases as they reach
the continental shelf, the part of the Earth’s crust that slopes, or rises, from the ocean floor up to the land.
Tsunamis wash ashore with often disastrous effects such as severe flooding, loss of lives due to drowning, and
damage to property.

Global warming is one of the most serious concerns at present. Due to global warming, the average temperature of
the earth is rising day by day. It is not only affecting the lives of humans on earth but also have an impact on other living
organisms.
The main causes of global warming are deforestation and greenhouse effect. The forests act as the lungs for the
people on earth as they create lots of oxygen which are required by humans for breathing. They capture harmful carbon
dioxide from the air. The deforestation leads to the increase in the level of carbon that consecutively results in increasing
global temperatures.
Greenhouse gases such as methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, water vapor, etc., redirect emission which the
earth releases. In the absence of such gases, earth might become too cold to sustain any life. The human activities like the
burning of fossil fuels, emissions from the vehicles, etc., are increasing greenhouse gases in the air that result in the rise of
the earth’s temperature.
Global warming has impacted the ocean on earth. Due to global warming, the ice and snow worldwide is getting
melted at rapid speed in comparison to the past. Lots of sea ice has also vanished in different parts of the world. Global
warming makes the dry regions drier than earlier. It has affected the pattern of rainfall in a few areas.
Global warming is causing lots of problems for humans on earth but we should not forget that we humans are
responsible for its occurrence. It is our duty to take care of our earth so that our future generation does not get affected by
the problem of global warming.
Long time ago, things on this Earth was bigger and better than they are today. Fruits, Vegetables, grains, even people
animals were bigger and stronger.
Those were the days when people didn’t have to work very hard. When the grains of rice were ripe, they just fell down
on their own and went rolling into the village. There they would offer themselves to be eaten.
Once, an old woman and her daughter were building a storehouse for rice. A big grain of rice came rolling in before
the building was ready. Being already tired of hard work, the old woman became angry when she saw the grain of rice rolling
down to her incomplete storehouse. She kicked the rice and said” Could you not wait in the field till we were ready? Why do
you keep running after us?”
The grain of rice broke into thousands of pieces and said” We have always been kind to you. We give you food to eat.
We make things easy for you so we come to you ourselves and don’t give you trouble of collecting us in field. From now on,
we will not come to you. You will have to come and gather us. You will have to cook and eat a lot of grains of rice to fill your
stomach.”
From that day on wards, rice grains have become smaller in size. They do not come to people as they used to come
earlier. People have to gather grains from the fields and carry them to their stores and homes
19. According to the story, why didn’t people have to work hard to get food at that time?
The grains of rice were ripe enough to eat.
Fruits, vegetables and grains were very big.
The grains fell down and went rolling into the village.
People were bigger and stronger than they are today.
Things on earth were bigger than they are today.
On 26 October 1945, Brigadier A. W. S. Mallaby reached an agreement with Mr Suryo, the Republic of Indonesia’s
governor of East Java, that the British would not ask Indonesian troops/militia to hand over their weapons. An apparent
misunderstanding about the agreement between British troops in Jakarta (lead by Lieutenant General Sir Philip Christison)
and Mallaby’s troops in Surabaya was to have serious ramifications.
The Allied forces arrived at the end of October 1945, and fighting broke out on 30 October after the British
commander, Brigadier A. W. S. Mallaby was killed in a skirmish. The British retaliated with a punitive sweep that began on
10 November, under the cover of air attacks. Bung Tomo spurred thousands of Indonesians to action with his distinctive,
emotional speaking-style of his radio broadcasts. Although the Colonial forces largely captured the city in three days, the
poorly armed Republicans fought for three weeks.
Despite the military defeat suffered by the Republican fighters and a loss of manpower and weaponry that would
severely hamper Republican forces for the rest of the revolution, the battle and defense mounted by the Indonesians roused
the nation in support of independence and helped garner international attention. For the Dutch, it removed any doubt that the
Republic was not simply a gang of collaborators without popular support. It also had the effect of convincing Britain that
wisdom lay on the side of neutrality in the revolution; within a few years, in fact, Britain would support the Republican cause
in the United Nations.
23. What event is the main reason the battle of Surabaya occurred?
The British movement over Indonesia.
Bung Tomo’s provocation to the battle.
The arrival of Allied forces in Surabaya.
The murder of Brigadier A. W. S. Mallaby.

Smartphone manufacturers release their new products every year. These new phones are claimed better than the
previous models. They have a better operating system, storage, cameras, and other features. Thus, it is usual for few people to
change their phones regularly. However, is changing phones that often necessary?
We change our phones regularly for several good reasons. We are on our phones for a longer period of time
nowadays. We spent hours on our phones for works, school projects, entertainment, and sometimes exercises. Thus, our
phones are easily worn out, its battery is running low quickly, and there is no more storage for our data. A new phone can
offer these upgrades.
On the other hand, changing our phones regularly may not be necessary. New smartphones released may only offer
little differences from their predecessors. The new operating system's performance feels similar to the previous products that
we own, the phones offer less extra storage and battery power, and. sometimes, the manufacturers remove previous systems
that we prefer.
Changing our phones too often may leave us with more e-waste. With so many affordable pones released every year,
people tend to buy new phones instead of buying secondhand ones. Thus, we will have a difficulty to get rid of our old
phones. We will end up with a pile of old phones and their boxes lying around our houses or taking spaces in your closet.
Changing a new phone regularly, while proposing several benefits such as having a better battery life and storage,
may not be as necessary as you think Phone updates rarely offer you significant changes to your phones. We may also stack
unnecessary e-waste in our houses. It is best to change our phones not too often.
28. Why may changing phones too often not be the best idea?
29. How does the writer present his/her stance related to the topic?
Once upon a psychology professor walked around on a stage while teaching stress management principles in an
auditorium filled with students. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they'd be asked the typical glass half
empty or glass half full' question. Instead, with a smile on her face, the professor asked. “How heavy is this glass of water
I'm holding?"
Students shouted out answers ranging from eight ounces to a couple of pounds. She replied, "From my perspective,
the absolute weight of this glass doesn't matter. It all depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute or two, it's
fairly light. If I hold it for an hour straight, its weight might make my arm ache a little. If I hold it for a day straight, my arm
will likely cramp up and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing me to drop the glass to the floor. In each case, the
weight of the glass doesn't change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it feels to me."
As the class shook their heads in agreement, she continued, “Your stresses and worries in life are very much like
this glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and you begin to ache
a little. Think about them all day long, and you will feel completely numb and paralyzed—incapable of doing anything else
until you drop them."
31. Why did the professor give such a lesson to her students?
To compare how people have different lives
To give new knowledge about a modern life
To give a clear explanation about problems in life
To encourage the students to see problems wisely
To persuade the students to share the lesson with others
