PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Inhibits protein synthesis at the level of the 50s bacterial ribosome. Indication for use: tx of the following infections due to susceptible
Effective against many gram positive and gram negative bacteria, as organisms- upper resp tract infections, lower resp infections, acute
well as mycobacteria otitis media, skin and skin structure infections, gu infections, PUD
and ophth prophylaxis in the neonate

Complications Medication Administration


Side effects: dizzy, seizures, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, chest pain, 250mg of erythromycin base or
hypotension, palpitations, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, stearate
cholestatic jaundice, elevated liver enzymes, vaginitis, anemia, 400mg of erythromycin ethylsuccinate
leukopenia, hyperkalemia, ototoxicity, angioedema,
pseudomembranous

Contraindications/Precautions
Contraindicated in hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, hr less than 50,
known alcohol intolerance
Nursing Interventions
Caution in- liver and renal disease, myasthenia gravis
Nursing assessment:
-culture sensitivity test should be
performed prior to therapy
-observe for s/s of anaphylaxis
-monitor CBC
Interactions
Drug to drug: pimozide, diltiazem, verapamil, ketoconazole,
itraconazole, nefazodone, verapamil, sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil,
rifampin, rifabutin

Client Education
Take the entire perscribtion as directed with food

Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Report blood in stool

Resolution of s/s of infection


Notify hcp if fever or diarrhea occurs
