! WARNING !
This procedure should only be performed by
qualified persons familiar with this equipment.
INTRODUCTION:
This is a procedure generally followed by an authorized LeTourneau technician when called upon
to perform complete electrical checkout and adjustments of the crane hook and swing DC drive
motor control systems.
Although it lengthens the procedure, several steps are repeated often for safety reasons – continual
reminders to open the power circuit breakers before touching terminals that are potentially “live”.
This document shall not be copied or distributed without the consent of the LeTourneau, Inc.

SET UP:
In performing this check-out procedure, the electrician (E) shall be in charge of giving
instructions. The assistant (A) shall ensure that power is off at all times except when
instructed otherwise. The operator (O) shall follow instructions given by the electrician, but
must remain alert to the crane position and advise when it is unsafe to carry out a request.
Step –
1. (O) - Shall position hook over the water and turn off all controls.
2. (E)(A) - Electrician and his assistant - using safety precautions, access the crane machinery house.
3. (A) - Immediately upon entering the machinery house, turn off circuit breakers feeding the boom
motor and the hook and swing M/G sets at the main 480-volt power panel,
4. (E)(O) - Establish reliable communications between the electrician and the operator. If no radios
are available, it may be necessary for the assistant to act as a signalman.

STEPS 16-31: DC Generator Open-Circuit Test & Adjusting Speed/Voltage Limiter VOLTS pot:
Step –
16. (E) - Remove the hook dc motor “B” lead and the “W”-grid lead from hook 4-leaf switch (series
field reversing switch) left rear stud and tape the ends.
17. (E) - Disconnect and tape one of the wires to the brake contactor coil – on the hook control board.
[This will prevent the hook motor brake from releasing while the motor is disabled.]
18. (E) - Connect (or hold) multi-meter POS lead on 55 – one of the front terminal studs, and NEG
lead on 58 – right rear stud on the hook 4-leaf switch.
19. (A) – Turn on hook circuit breaker.
20. (O) – Start hook M/G set, turn hook brake switch to “Release” and move hook control
potentiometer to the full RAISE position. Verify 4 leaf switch contacts are made to the back
contacts. If incorrect reverse wires #41 and #42 at the terminal strip of the 4 leaf switch.
21. (E) - Voltage reading should be 460 to 480 VDC (55 Positive with respect to 58). If the voltage
polarity is correct, proceed to step 25. If the polarity is opposite, instruct the operator to return the
potentiometer to the NEUTRAL position and go to next step. If the voltage is low go to step 25a.
22. (A) – turn off hook circuit breaker.
23. (E) – Cross wires labeled 50H and 51H at the 4 x 4 exciter. These are connected to the two larger
terminals (output) nearest the pulley.
24. (A)(O) - Repeat Step 22 to verify proper polarity with the operator potentiometer in the full RAISE
position.
25a. Adjust the slide clamp of the 50 ohm potentiometer supply resistor until the correct voltage is
achieved. When correct go to the next step.
25. (E) - Watching the meter, turn the VOLTS pot on the speed/voltage limiter CCW until the voltage
is decreased 1-volt. This proves the speed/voltage limiter will go into limiting mode if the
generator-motor dc bus voltage exceeds the adjusted value.
26. (O) – Move the potentiometer to the full LOWER position. The electrician will verify the dc bus
voltage has reversed, e.g., 55 is Negative with respect to 58, and is approximately the same value
as in the RAISE direction. If incorrect refer to potentiometer troubleshooting.
27. (O) – Move the potentiometer repeatedly through the NEUTRAL position while the electrician
observes positive and proper switching of the 4-leaf switch.

28. (O) – Return the potentiometer to the NEUTRAL position; turn the hook brake switch to SET; turn
the hook M/G set off; and, it is good practice to turn the AC Main switch off as well.
29. (A) – Turn the hook circuit breaker off.
31. (E) - Disconnect the multi-meter leads from the 4-leaf switch studs; re-connect the hook motor “B”
lead; the “W”-grid lead; and the brake contactor coil wire.
This concludes the DC Generator Open-Circuit Test & Adjusting Speed/Voltage Limiter VOLTS pot.
STEPS 32-51: DC Hook Motor Rotation Test (Shunt and Series Fields connected proper):
Step –
32. (E) – Remove one lead of the shunt field, either 44 OR 45 from the 4 x 4 exciter output terminals –
end opposite the pulley.
33. (A) – Turn the hook circuit breaker on.
! CAUTION !
Motor over-speeding possible!
• Hook motor may try to over-speed with shunt field open.
• Alert operator to be prepared to stop the motor.
• Operator should move hook potentiometer carefully
when instructed to do so.
34. (O) – Start hook M/G set and release the brake. Carefully give a small command to power the
hook motor in the up direction while observing the hook block movement. When he sees the block
moving, give slightly more command.
Note: The hook motor should rotate CW, or toward the door – observed when facing the
motor from the brake end.
Stop the motor. If the motor rotation is proper, proceed to the Step 39. If the motor rotation was
opposite in that the block lowered with a RAISE command, proceed to the next step.
35. (A) – Turn the hook circuit breaker off.
36. (E) – If the motor rotation was opposite in that the block lowered, cross the motor leads
“C” and “D” connected to the rear (top straps of the two left poles) of the 4-leaf switch.

Note: It will be necessary to check the two leads to the diode reducer as well, if
“C” and “D” needed to be crossed. “C” should connect to the plate, “D” to the
diode pigtails.
37. (A) - Turn the hook circuit breaker on.
38. (O) - Repeat Step 34. Ensure the hook block positively move upward.
39. (O) – Carefully give a small command to lower the hook block. If the motor rotation is proper and
the M/G set responds to change in command, proceed to Step 44. If the M/G set starts to labor and
bog down, it is likely that the diode reducer leads will need to be crossed at the 4-leaf switch.
These leads are connected at the same terminals as the “C” and “D” motor leads.
40. (O) – Turn the brake switch to off, and stop the M/G set.
41. (A) - Turn the hook circuit breaker off.
42. (E) – Cross the diode reducer leads.
43. (O) – Repeat Step 39, e.g., small command to lower block. If lower direction of travel is proper set
hook brake and stop M/G set.
44. (A) – Turn hook circuit breaker off.
45. (E) – Re-connect shunt field wire to 4 x 4 exciter terminal disconnected in Step 32.
46. (A) – Turn hook circuit breaker on.
47. (O) – Start hook M/G set and release hook brake. Move hook potentiometer to the RAISE
direction. The hook block should travel in the UP direction. If the hook block travels DOWN –
contrary to the command, dc motor shunt field wires, 44 and 45, need to be crossed as follows: If
correct go to step 52a
48. (O) – Set hook brake and turn the M/G set off.
49. (A) – Turn the hook circuit breaker off.
50. (E) – Cross the dc motor shunt field wires 44 and 45 at the 4 x 4 exciter terminals. [These are the
two larger studs on the terminal block opposite the pulley end.]
51. (A) – Turn the hook circuit breaker on.
52. (O) – Repeat Step 47, e.g., command the hook block to RAISE. Ensure proper rotation of the hook
motor in the UP direction.
53. Set hook brake, turn off M/G set and turn off hook circuit breaker.

STEPS 52-61: Maximum and Minimum (Diminished) Shunt Field Test [Hook DC Motor]:
Step –
54. (E) – Connect the multi-meter leads to terminals 44 and 45 on the 4 x 4 exciter.
55. (A) – Turn hook circuit breaker on.
56. (O) – Start M/G set and release hook brake. Hook potentiometer must be in NEUTRAL position.
57. (E) - Read multi-meter [140 to 150 VDC]. If incorrect refer to the crane failure analysis chart.
58. (O) – Move hook potentiometer to full command position (either direction, but LOWER direction
is preferred).
59. (E) - Read multi-meter [40 to 50 VDC]. The limiter fail-safe contactor should pull in and the shunt
field voltage should diminish to this value. If it does, proceed to Step 61. If the voltage increases
instead of decreasing, the 26 circuit wires will need to be crossed.
60. (O) – Set hook brake and turn M/G set off.
61. (A) – Turn hook circuit breaker off.
62. (E) – Disconnect, cross and re-connect wires 26 POS-RM and 26 POS-GM at the flags of the two
top right poles of the 4-leaf switch.
This concludes the Maximum and Minimum (Diminished) Shunt Field Test [Hook DC Motor]:
! CAUTION !
Over-speed of equipment possible!
• Do not adjust speed pot on speed/voltage limiter to exceed
20 VDC – tach output, as dc hook motor braking capability
required for full-load lowering may be exceeded.
67. (O) – Set hook brake and turn M/G set off.

86. (E) – Check for proper polarity of 55 and 58. If the polarity is correct and the voltage is low or
high, adjust the slider on resistor with wire labeled 54S.
87. (O) – Move the swing potentiometer to the full SWING LEFT position, while electrician observes
the meter to determine the polarity has reversed and the maximum voltage value is approximately
equal to that of the other polarity.
88. (O) – Return the swing potentiometer to the NEUTRAL position, turn swing brake switch to SET,
and turn the M/G set off.
89. (A) – Turn the swing circuit breaker off.
90. (E) – Re-connect the swing motor “B” lead, the “W”-grid lead and the brake contactor coil wire.
STEPS 89-108: SWING DC Motor Rotation Test [Shunt Field and Series Field connections]:
Step -
91. (E) – Locate the dc motor shunt field wire 198S on the terminal strip at the top of the swing control
board and remove it. (Typically identified as larger [#10 AWG] than the other wires on the
terminal. Make sure all the other wires are replaced and the terminal is tight.
! CAUTION !
Motor over-speeding possible!
• Swing motor may try to over-speed with shunt field open.
• Alert operator to be prepared to stop the motor.
• Operator should move hook potentiometer carefully
when instructed to do so.

This concludes the Swing DC Motor Rotation Test [Shunt Field and Series Field connections].
Step –
110. (A) – Turn all remaining circuit breakers on.
111. (O) – Check all functions of the crane, including the proper operation of the hook/boom Anti-Two-
Block limit, the boom upper and lower limits and the swing right and left limits.
112. (O) - Check Emergency Stop button for proper operation.

Rotation Test
for
LeTourneau Compound Wound DC Motors
(PCM-120AS Marine Cranes)
Major damage can result when these two fields are not connected properly (cumulatively
connected), especially as the load on the motor increases.
When there is only one motor driving a motion the rotation test is made as follows:
1. Make certain there is no load on the motor drive system that can fall and that it is safe to
make the test. For example, there should be no load on the hook.
2. Disconnect the shunt field from its supply. For the hook motor, remove wire 44 (or 45) from
the exciter terminal stud. For the swing motor, remove wire 198S (or 198AS) from the swing
board top terminal strip.
3. With the M/G set running, release the brake and move the operator’s potentiometer off
neutral position slowly until the motor turns. Use caution because a series motor can
overspeed when lightly loaded.
4. Observe the direction of rotation. If the rotation is opposite to that commanded, the series
field leads should be reversed on the 4-leaf switch.
5. Re-connect the shunt field wire and repeat the rotation test. Note: Under light load and at
slow speeds the dc motor will always turn in the direction caused by the current flow in the
shunt field windings.
6. Before assuming that all is well after the rotation test has been carried out, it is important to
continue with another check.
[Check the shunt field operation on the hook motor, by measuring the maximum field
voltage across wires 44 and 45 when the motor is stationary. This should read
approximately 140 to 145 VDC. Then read again when the motor is running at full
speed. The voltage should have diminished to approximately 40 to 45 VDC.]
[The swing motor shunt field is constant and the voltage should read approximately 26 to
27 VDC.]
7. Finally, with a dc clamp and multi-meter, measure for motor armature current flowing
through the braking diodes (diode reducer) during acceleration. There should be no current
flow. The meter should briefly indicate current flow during deceleration – when bringing the
motor and motion to a quick stop.
Reference:
Electrical schematic drawing details show the proper connections for both the hook and
swing 4-leaf switches. Schematic drawing number, 422-8699 rev 02.
For uniformity, LeTourneau’s conventions are for the 4-leaf switch positions to be as
shown relative to the drive motion.
