USING OF TENSES

1.1. Simple Present Tense (Verb1 / Verbs)

Sürekli yaptığımız rutin işlerimizde, alışkanlıklarımızda, doğa olaylarında kullandığımız

zamandır.

Example:

• I play tennis every weekend.

• I do not swim on Saturdays.
• Do you like him?

1.2. Simple Past Tense (Verb2)

Geçmişte olmuş bitmiş işleri anlatmak için kullanılır.

Example:

• We went to cinema last week.

• She did not watch TV yesterday.
• Did you do homework yesterday?

1.3. Simple Future Tense (will+Verb1)

Gelecekte yapılacak olan işleri anlatmak için kullanılır.

Example:

• I will travel next week.

• You will not buy newspaper next week.
• Will they go to school tomorrow?

1.3.1. be going to Future Tense (am/is/are going to + Verb1)

Gelecekle ilgili planlarımızı ve tasarladığımız işleri anlatmak için kullanılan zamandır.

Example:

• I am going to travel to Canada next year.

• She is not going to write a letter to her friend this summer.
• Are you going to kill it?

1.4. Present Continuous Tense (am/is/are+Verbing)

İçinde bulunduğumuz andaki yaptığımız işlerin tümünü anlatmak için kullandığımız

zamandır.

Example:

• I'm playing computer games now.

• It is not raining at the moment.
• Why are you running?

1.5. Past Continuous Tense (was/were+Verbing)

Geçmişte belirli bir süre devam etmiş ve geçmişte bitmiş olayları anlatmak için
kullanılır.

Example:

• He was watching horror film (korku filmi).

• My father was not reading a newspaper last night.
• What was my sister doing last morning?

1.6. Future Continuous Tense (will be+Verbing)

Gelecekte belirli bir sürede devam eden olayları anlatmak için kullanılır. (No body
know the future.)

Example:

• She will be playing tennis when you arrive at home (gelecek zaman).
• Daddy will not be working this time next year.
• What will he be doing this time tomorrow?

1.7. Present Perfect Tense (have/has+Verb3) (Not use in Turkish)

• Geçmişte belirli bir sürede başlamış hala devam etmekte olan olaylar için,
• Geçmişte bitmiş fakat etkisi devam eden olaylar için kullanılır.

Example:

• I have been in Istanbul two times this year.

• He has not gone to Canada.
• How long have you been to in Turkey?

1.8. Past Perfect Tense (had+ Verb3)

Geçmişte başlamış geçmişte belirli bir süreden önce bitmiş (yine geçmişte bitmiş bir
olaydan önce) olaylar için kullanılır.

Example:

• She had already flown (Verb3 of fly) to Rome.

• My sister had not visited Istanbul when she was in Turkey.
• Had you ever ridden (Verb3 of ride-binmek) a horse before?

1.9. Future Perfect Tense (will+have+Verb1)

Gelecekte belirli bir süreden önce tamamlanacak işler için kullanılır.

Example:

• I will have finished my homework by the time my father comes back (gelecek
zaman).
• She will not have lived in Ankara by the end of next summer.
• How long will he have lived in Manchester by the end of next spring?

1.10. Present Perfect Continuous Tense (have/has+been+Verbing)

Geçmişte başlamış ve şu ana kadar süre gelen işleri anlatmak için kullanılan zamandır.

Example:

• They have been studying English for two hours.

• My grandparent has not been watching TV for five hours.
• How long has she been studying Turkish?

1.11. Past Perfect Continuous Tense (had+been+Verbing)

Geçmişte başlayıp geçmişte belirli bir süreden önceye kadar süre gelen işleri
anlatmak için kullanılan zamandır.

Example:

• He had been sleeping for hours when the doorbell rang suddenly
(aniden/birdenbire).
• The party had not been going on for two hours when they began quarrelling
(çekişme/tartışama).
• How long had he been sleeping when we arrived?

1.12. Future Perfect Continuous Tense (will+have+been+Verbing)

Gelecekte belirli bir süreden önceye kadar devam eden zamanı ifade etmek için
kullanılan zamandır.

Example:

• I will have been studying for two hours when you come back.
• They will not have been watching TV for three hours by the time he goes out.
• How long will you have been studying lesson by the time you take the
examination (sınav/inceleme/muayene)?

2. ENGLİSH TENSES MIXTURE EXERCİSE 1

1. When Carol called last night I was watching my favorite TV show.

(Dün gece Carol aradığında ben favori TV gösterimi izliyordum.)

2. I have been working for this company for more than thirty years and I intend to
stay here until I retire.

(Bu şirkette otuz yılı aşkın bir süredir çalışıyorum ve emekli olana kadar burada
kalmaya niyetliyim.)

3. Sharon loves to travel. She goes abroad almost every summer. Next year she plans
to go to Peru.

(Sharon seyahat etmeyi sever. O neredeyse her yıl yurtdışına gider. Gelecek yıl
Peru’ya gitmeyi planlıyor.)

4. Thomas is an author who has been writing since he was a child. Altogether he has
written seven novels and three collections of short stories.

(Thomas çocukluğundan bu yana yazan bir yazardır. Tümüyle/toplamda yedi roman
ve üç kısa öykü yazdı.)

5. We were late because we had some car problems. By the time we go to the train
Susan had been waiting for us for more than two hours.

(Geç kaldık çünkü arabada birkaç problem vardı. Trenle giderken Susan iki saatten
fazladır bizi bekliyordu.)

6. Every day I wake up at six, eat breakfast at seven and leave for work at eight.
However, this morning I get up at 6:30, skipped breakfast and left for work late
because I forgot to set the alarm.

(Her gün 6’da kalkar, 7’de kahvaltıyı yapar ve 8’de iş için ayrılırım. Fakat bu sabah
6:30’da kalktım, işe geç kalmamak için kahvaltıyı atladım çünkü alarmı kurmayı
unuttum.)

7. Right now Jim is preparing dinner and Sandra is bringing the children to bed. Last
night at this time they were doing the same thing.

(Jim şu an akşam yemeği hazırlıyor ve Sandra çocukları yatağa görütüyor. Onlar

geçen gece bu zamanlarda da aynı şeyi yapıyordu.)

8. By this time next summer you will have completed your studies and found a job.
I, on the other hand, will not have accomplished anything. I will still be studying and
you will be working in some new high paying job.

(Siz gelecek yaz bu zamanlarda derslerinizi tam tamamlamış ve bir iş bulmuş

olacaksınız. Bunun yanında ben hiçbir şeyi başarıyla tamamlayamayacağım. Ben hala
ders çalışıyor olacağım ve siz yeni yüksek ücretli işte çalışıyor olacaksınız.)

9. The students are usually taught by Mr. Bingham. However, this week, they are
being taught by the assistant teacher.

(Öğrenciler genellikle Bay Bingham tarafından öğretilir. Fakat bu hafta asistan

öğretmen tarafından öğretiliyorlar.)

10. Bob has been on the phone for over an hour. I wonder when he’s finished.

(Bob bir saati aşkın bir süredir telefonda. Ben ne zaman bittiğini merak ediyorum.)

11. Mary always takes the children to football training at this time.

(Mary her zaman bu zamanlarda çocukları futbol kursundan alır.)

12. While we were waiting for the bus we saw two children flashing by with their roller
skates.

(Biz otobüsü beklerken iki çocuğun patenlerinin yanıp söndüğünü gördük.)

13. When we finally go to the village we had been travelling for over five hours. We
were exhausted.

(Biz sonunda köye gittiğimizde beş saati aşkın bir süredir seyahat ediyorduk. Çok
yorulduk.)
