1. Define ‘Unconscious Bias’;


- learned stereotypes that are automatic, unintentional, deeply ingrained, universal and
able to influence behavior

think exists in the classroom.
- grading

3. Why do you think teachers have/practice unconscious bias?


- teachers need to practice unconscious bias so they don’t use it in the classroom
- unconscious bias can be used to negatively view students, could possibly hurt them

4. Describe a time when you experienced unconscious bias.


- there have been multiple instances in my classes where teachers have either favored or
disfavored students based on their backgrounds
- these instances have negatively impacted other students opportunities

5. Do you think unconscious bias really affects the way a teacher grades or
treats students? Explain.
Yes, a gut feeling ultimately maximises unconscious bias and can be used specifically in
the grading process. It is important teachers question first impressions and justify decisions.

6. How can a teacher avoid practicing unconscious bias? List multiple ways.
1) Recognize that everyone uses unconscious bias
2) Identify your bias
3) Avoid snap decisions and consider assessment criteria carefully
4) Incorporate examples which question stereotypes and value diversity
5) Encourage participation of under-represented groups in class
