Essay: Living in hometown during university.

Many young people who enter higher education choose to move to a different
city to study so that they can experience independent living away from their
parents. However, it is also very common for young people beginning university
to choose to study in their hometown and continue living with their parents
throughout their university years.
Although there are some downsides to living at home while studying at
university, there are also numerous upsides. One of the strongest arguments for
living at home is the amount of money that can be saved. Despite some student
accommodation offering good value for money, it is still likely to be cheaper for
university students to live with their parents. This will make it financially easier for
them to cover the constantly rising cost of tuition. Another benefit of staying at
home is that one does not have to share a bedroom with unfriendly or untidy
roommates, noisy party-goers or heavy snorers. The peace and quiet of their
childhood bedroom will give the students all the privacy they need to study
undisturbed. Yet another plus is the support and comfort that the family so
naturally provides – a home-cooked meal, a hug and lots of reassurance before a
difficult exam or someone to confide in after a stressful day.
Despite these clear advantages, there are also
potential drawbacks. The daily commute is one
of the drawbacks of living a long way from the
university campus. A regular commuter fare on
buses or trams, even at a discount, can still cost
a lot per year. Likewise, one should consider
the time spent commuting. Even a half-hour
commute to and from campus may have quite
an impact on students study and socialization time, especially during exam
periods. Another drawback is the chance they miss to learn to be independent in
their lives. University campuses give students the opportunity to live
autonomously and make mistakes in a relatively safe environment. Living on their
own, students learn to cook and clean for themselves. Similarly, they gain
experience in managing their money and be responsible.
All things considered, there are pros and cons to living at home while studying at
university. While there might be some disadvantages like impaired social campus
life and probably not as many chances to learn to be independent on their own.
Still, students living at home can certainly make good use of social media to
connect with their classmates, so that they don't feel they are missing out on
something. Personally, I think the benefits of living or studying away from home
because it prepares students for the real world nor than just lesson without
practice.
