2008
Kew Engineering was founded in 1952 on
the strength of an order to rebuild and
hard-surface one hundred 26” diameter
Vaughn wire drawing blocks for CF& I, in
Roebling, NJ. In 1953 Kew Engineering
combined with Parkway Welding, a
company whose primary business was the
hard-surfacing and rebuilding of earth-
moving equipment, to form Parkway-Kew
Corporation.

Over the next 46 years Parkway-Kew

Corporation would continue to expand it
products and services, outgrowing, four
separate facilities in the process.
Parkway-Kew Corporation relocated to its
current location in North Brunswick, NJ in
November 1999. Since its inception
Parkway-Kew Corporation has expanded its
products and services into other fields
including: wire drawing, fiber optics,
automotive and pump housings. Today
Parkway-Kew Corporation is a full service supplier and is recognized as a world
leader in the coating, fabrication and repair of wire drawing blocks, and capstans.

The restore and grind process represents a significant advancement in the
reduction of costs associated with the hard surfacing and maintenance of wire
drawing blocks.

In the before picture (right), the block has a .040”

deep groove at the draw line which causes
marking, overlapping, and occasionally wire
breaks. The block had been previously hard
surfaced with our PK-700, a tungsten carbide –
HVOF spray coating, deposited to finished
thickness of .080”. Past procedure would be to
regrind the block with the correct taper until the
.040” deep groove disappeared.

Parkway-Kew has developed a special process

that allows for replacement of material only where BEFORE
needed with the same (original) coating or next
higher grade coating. Minimal stock is removed in restoring the block contour,
while the original coating remains intact. The finish does not exhibit any chipping
or flaking of the hard coating in the grooved area (after picture - lower left).

The restore and grind process can be done

numerous times on blocks that have been
previously hard surfaced. The repaired surface will
last as long as the original surface, but at a
fraction of the original cost. This can greatly
reduce long term maintenance costs. This process
can be utilized on the same block numerous times.
The restore and grind process can be utilized with
most of our coatings including: PK-750, PK-700,
PK-920, PK-675, PK-503, PK-400 and PK-200.

Grit-Blast and Aluminize (aka GB&A) is a two-step process designed to remove rust
and scale on the interior of water-cooled wire drawing blocks and capstans,
followed by a coating of aluminum to minimize future corrosion build up, and
promote better block cooling.

In the before picture (right), the 20” Vaughn

Intermediate water-cooled block has a significant
build up of rust and scale. This build-up can cause
poor water circulation, and results in block
overheating. This scenario can lead to: BEFORE
¾ Reduced production speeds
¾ Wire climbing issues
¾ Wire marking
¾ Possible die wear
Untreated - Can result in leakage and ultimately block replacement.

Step No. 1: The block interior is grit-blasted to clean

and remove rust and scale. Step No. 2: the block
interior is sprayed with a .020” aluminum coating,
which will facilitate heat transfer from the wire to the
water. The control of the wire temperature will
maximize production. (See after photo left and
below).
AFTER

The benefits of GB&A include maximized

production, and increased block life.
The benefits to the modern style two-piece,
narrow gap cooled blocks (ie. Morgan-Koch,
Frigerio, etc) are even more substantial for
maintaining efficient and quality production.

The heart and soul of all ferrous wire drawing is the maintenance of the wire drawing blocks. They control the
surface quality of the wire, drawing speeds, bundle size and method of packaging. Below are a few standard
guidelines worth following.

Taper Control a Must

The taper is the single most important factor in block performance. The industry standard for taper is the
measurement of the angle with a centerline, not the included angle. Example: a 1/2° taper is .0175” on the
diameter; a 1° taper is .035”. Taper tolerance should be +/- .002”. The basic rule of thumb is, if the wire is not
"climbing," increase the taper. If it shoots up, reduce the taper. Small diameter wire requires more taper than
larger diameter wire.

There are two exceptions to the above rules: (1) the need to create a step, and (2) the need to create double or
multiple tapers. A step may be needed to increase the bundle size or relieve the tightness of the wire on the
block. A step may also be required on a single-taper block if the wire initially climbs smoothly, but then falters as
the bundle weight increases. This situation results in the wire backing down and overlapping at the radius prior to
achieving the full bundle size.

Steps are used on many blocks to compensate for the shrinking inside diameter of the coil as the wire cools and
contracts. The wire becomes very tight against the block face making it increasingly difficult to push the wire up
into the accumulated bundle. The step size should be smaller than the smallest wire being drawn to prevent
overlap while approaching full bundle size. Normal steps range from .240” to .125” per side. When adjusting taper
to increase bundle size, each case must be considered separately. Local machine shops or block repair
companies either do not have the capability, or are unwilling to grind double tapers, and usually compromise by
grinding a 1/2° or 3/4° straight taper. This often results in startup problems and the wire jumping on the block.

Troubleshooting

Block performance problems are often blamed on the radius. However, the only function of the radius is to get the
wire to start climbing. A general rule is that the radius should be slightly larger than the largest wire to be drawn.
If you have a wide range of wire diameters, use a 45° ramp 1” to 1.5” long instead of a radius with small radii (ex.
¼”) at both ends. The wire enters about two-thirds up the 45° and creates the lift of the radius over a wider range
of wire sizes.

Cooling - be it air, or water - is critical to block performance, so make sure that clogged water jets are repaired
and leaking water seals are rebuilt. A common practice is to turn off the water at startup to facilitate wire
climbing. That practice can also cause a block to crack, especially narrow gap-cooled blocks. Rust and scale
buildup can also reduce the effectiveness of a water-cooled block. Block interiors should be grit-blasted and
aluminized to minimize future corrosion build-up and promote more efficient block cooling. The larger the wire
and die pull, the more likely it is that gripper damage can occur. There are special gripper heads available to
reduce this problem although you can try wrapping a gripper head with heavy rubber, canvas or old carpet and
secure it with wire. Operators should start the wire slowly, since the point of initial contact is where most
damage occurs.

Another common problem is galling, where some of the wire surface becomes embedded on the block. You can
remove it with an emery paper flap wheel mounted on a disc grinder, but carefully check from the radius up the
face of the block. Wire overlap another potential problem, is often caused by improper die alignment. Most die
boxes can be adjusted so that the wire will enter at the draw line parallel to the floor. A level placed on the wire
can be used to correct this. There are many other potential problem areas that can greatly affect block
performance, but being aware of the more common ones is a good place to start.
