ART APPRECIATION

This painting is made by the famous painter and Dutch post- impressionist Vincent
van Gough, he painted the STARRY NIGTH in June 1889. According to him, it described the
view from the east- facing window of his asylum room just before sunrise, with the addition
of an ideal village.

About the contoured forms of this painting, means of expression and they are used to
convey emotions.
While the color of it was, if you can see part of the village, it was painted with dark
colors but the brightly lit windows create a sense of comfort. This part is peaceful in
comparison to the dramatic night sky and the silence of the night can almost felt in the starry
night. The steeple dominates the village and symbolizes unity in the town that can be seen
throughout the painting itself.
In terms of composition, the church that can be seen at the down part in the middle of
this piece of art gives an impression of size and isolation.
In the left foreground is a curvy cypress tree which is typically associated with
mourning. It is painted in the same way as the sky in the upper part with fluid lines which
enhances the flow of the starry night painting well as its easiness on the eye.
In short, the painting STARRY NIGHT means, the powerful sky sits above the quit
town. It seems that it is about contrasting life and death with luminous stars and a gloomy,
peaceful village. The main lights sources are the bright stars and crescent moon in the night
sky.

This painting portrayed about loneliness and on how dramatic the life is, at the same
time you can feel the peacefulness of our life. I can relate this to myself and in my whole life
because, most of the time, I prefer to be alone in a peaceful place because at this kind of
situation I felt more relaxed than socializing with someone else, together with hearing a sad
and classic music. I am the person who are not fond of socializing with the people around me.
Also, I felt more the peacefulness of life at night seeing the scenery above, I thought of how
beautiful the shine of the moon and the stars above. Upon doing sightseeing in the night sky I
also thinking about life and death of a person, on how I will survive my challenges in life and
on how’s future until my last day in this world.
