READING (20 MARKS)
1. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow briefly.
Great people are born to produce an influence on society. One such personality, who was so humble
and lived his complete life with determination and purpose to achieve certain aims, was Ishwar Chandra
Vidyasagar. He was a great social reformer, writer, educator and worked endlessly to transform the
society. He strongly protested against polygamy and child marriage. He favoured widow remarriage
and women's education in India. The Widow Remarriage Act was passed in 1856 making the marriage
of widows legal because of his efforts to solve these problems.
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar refined the way Bengali language was written and taught. His book 'Borno
Porichoy' (Introduction to the Alphabet) is still used as the introductory text to teach Bengali alphabet.
Thus, he brought about a revolution in the Bengali Education System. Vidyasagar is credited with the
role of completely changing the old method of teaching which prevailed in Sanskrit College. As a
professor in Sanskrit College, he brought modern outlook into the method of teaching. He included
English and Bengali as mediums of learning, besides Sanskrit. He, also introduced courses in European
History, Philosophy and Science alongside Vedic scriptures. He encouraged students to study these
subjects and make the best of both the worlds.
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was a strong advocate of women education. He rightly viewed education
as the primary way for women to achieve emancipation from the society's oppression they had to face
at that time. He exercised his power to open schools for girls and even outlined suitable curriculum to
educate them. He went from door to door, requesting heads of families to allow their daughters to be
enrolled in schools. Ishwar Chandra was a man who defined his own path of action. He never listened
to what others said about his work and made decisions based on his own judgement. He was famous
for all these qualities. He was also known for his great courage. Vidyasagar had a very soft heart that
sympathised with those in trouble. He was easily moved to tears when he saw someone in pain and
was always the first one to offer his help to colleagues and friends in distress. After his death,
Rabindranath Tagore said, "One wonders how God, in the process of producing forty million Bengalis,
produced a man !"

2. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow briefly.
(1) Humour is infectious. The sound of roaring laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniffle or
sneeze. When laughter is shared, it binds people together and increases happiness and intimacy. In
addition to the domino effect of joy and amusement, laughter also triggers healthy physical changes
in the body. Humour and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain
and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free and
easy to use. Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain and conflict. Nothing works faster or more
dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humour lightens your
burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others and keeps you grounded, focused and alert.
(2) With so much power to heal and renew, the ability to laugh easily and frequently is tremendous resource
for surmounting problems, enhancing your relationship and supporting both physical and emotional
health.
(3) Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving
your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes afterwards. Laughter also boosts the immune system. It
decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving
your resistance to disease. It triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural 'feel-good' chemicals.
Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.
(4) Laughter protects the heart. It improves the functioning of blood vessels and increases blood flow,
which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.
(5) Laughter makes you feel good; and the good feeling that you get when you laugh remains with you
even after the laughter subsides. Humour helps you keep a positive, optimistic outlook through difficult
situation, disappointments and physical or emotional loss.
(6) More than just a respite from sadness and pain, laughter gives you the courage and strength to find
new sources of meaning and hope. Even the most difficult of times, a laugh or even simply a smile can
go a long way toward making you feel better. And laughter really is contagious. Just hearing laughter
primes your brain and readies you to smile and join in on the fun.
On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer of the following questions briefly. (8 marks)
(a) What physical and emotional benefits do humour and laughter together give us?
(b) How does humour beneficially help our mental makeup?

Sir,

Subject : Influence of friends on students

Through the columns of your esteemed daily I wish to express my views on "Influence of friends
on students".

PRE-NURTURE & CAREER FOUNDATION DIVISION ENGLISH
It is no secret that the peer group has a great influence on young minds. Teenagers in school look
up to their friends. They are influenced by their manners, behaviour, fashion modes, etc. Friends
can have both positive and negative impact on the students. If we made a wrong choice, we can
fall a prey to all kinds of bad habits. Smoking, bunking classes, visiting cyber cafes and wasting
money are some of the lesser negative influences. If not checked in time, can lead to greater
dangers – petty crimes, offences, even drugs!
The first step is the home atmosphere where the students can choose good values. Loving care
of parents, proper attention to their growing years and right moral values taught by examples and
not by lectures. Proper guidance at home will have a positive effect. In school the students will
instinctively avoid bad company will not fall a prey to anti-social behaviour. The teachers in
school will have to be vigilant too, set a proper example and engage the students in healthy
sports, and develop interest in studies. Parents and teachers have a great role to play in the proper
development of children. Habits that harm like excessive T.V. watching, playing video or
computer games, should be checked and healthy outdoor games should be encouraged.
I hope my suggestions will be appreciated.

Sub: Delay in delivering books

Sir
I am forced to show my utter displeasure at the undue delay in the delivery of books for our school
library by you. We had placed a bulk order for the purchase of books three months ago. In spite
of several reminders, you have not sent a satisfactory reply for this inordinate delay. This behaviour
defies the norms of business ethics. I may also go against the goodwill that Geeta Publications have
earned in the market. Before we decide otherwise, we would like to enquire you about the reasons
of this inordinate delay. The first term of the academic year is about to end. The students of classes
X and XII, who have to appear at the board exams, are the worst sufferers. If you fail to deliver
the books, particularly for classes X and XII by 27 July 20××, we will be compelled to cancel the
said order.
Yours sincerely

4. Exercise Enhances Momeory
–Dipanshu
It is a fact that the present generation is definitely going to be of couch potatoes and the spectacled.
We see all round us children wearing spectacles and are obese. This all is due to eating rich food including
the junk food and sitting for hours before TV screens, playing video games and no exercise. Such
things do not bode well for human health.
Generally speaking studies and sports are indispensable for a proper growth and a good career. So
physical exercise in the form of workouts, cycling, walking, playing traditional games are as important
for good health as air and water for survival. An hour's daily workout, walking, cycling etc, done for
six months to a year increase the size of crucial parts of the brain.
We need to spread awareness among the children and masses through posters and morning assembly
talks. We must know that a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. So let us go out and exercise for
better performance at academics and live a pleasant and contented life.

Once upon a time there lived a small poor boy whose name was Rama. He loved to play tricks
with animals. One day, Rama held out a piece of bread to a dog. The dog jumped forward to
take it but failed because Rama withdrew his hand at that moment and ran away with the piece
of bread. The dog barked and ran after Rama for the bread. Rama ultimately threw the bread, but
it fell in the drain. As the dog tried to attack Rama in frustration, he hit it with a stick.
A middle aged man was passing by and saw Rama's act of mischief. He called Rama and asked
him. "Why are you hitting the dog?" Rama brushed away the question with laughter. The man
offered Rama a ten rupee coin and advised him not to hurt street dogs. He also asked Rama to
buy some bread and feed the dog himself. Rama then bought another loaf of fresh bread. He
lifted the dog in his arms and fed him the bread. The dog ate the bread quickly as it was
hungry. Then it licked Rama's face to show its gratitude. Rama was now a changed boy.

(b) Glass is breaking as the trees are forcing to come out of it.
(c) The trees are stumbling forward victoriously towards the forest.
(d) The wind rushes out to meet the trees.
9. (a) Robert Frost gives quite a positive message to the readers. Depression and hopelessness do
cloud our hearts, spirits and moods. However, there is a silver-lining beyond every cloud. The
poet had given up all hopes and declared that the whole day would go waste. Suddenly, the
falling of fine dust of snow on him brings a sudden change in his mood. Cheerfulness
replaces the feeling of regret.
(b) Anil hired Hari Singh because Hari Singh himself expressed his desire to work for him. When
Anil told him that he could not pay him, Hari Singh asked him if he could feed him. Anil
replied that if he knew how to cook, then he may work for him.
(c) Valli did not have any playmate of her age. She had a pastime of watching outside in the
street. She used to watch the new passengers boarding the bus. The arrival of the bus was the
most fascinating scene on the street for Valli. She watched the passengers boarding the bus
and to listen to their conversion. The sight of the bus was a source of unending joy for Valli.
(d) Lomov came to Chubukov to request him to allow him to propose to his daughter Natalya.
At that time he was suffering from weakness. His limbs became numb. Whenever he was
excited, his heart started palpitating. His foot often became numb and he was unable to bear
the shock in life.
(e) From this poem, we come to know that animals like to live freely in the forest. The animals
do not want to live in the zoo. Their life is pitiable in it.
(f) Tricki's main problem was his greed for food. For two days, Dr Herriot gave no food but
plenty of water to the dog. On the first day, Tricki lay motionless on the carpet. On the
second day, he started showing some interest in his surroundings. On the third day, he began
to whimper when he heard the dogs in the yard. From then on, his progress was rapid. He
started for his share of food and hunting rats at night.
(g) In the end, Bill stopped a friend of Lutkins. He made him admit that Oliver had gone to his
mother's farm. Bill told the narrator that Oliver Lutkins' mother was a terror. Once, he faced
her anger because she felt that Bill had not handled her trunk with proper care. She almost
took his skin off. She was 9 feet tall and 4 feet thick and quick as a cat.
10. For Children, the very sight of the baker was quite exciting. He was their friend, companion and
guide. The lingling thud of his bamboo put them in rapture. They ran to meet and greet him. It
was not so much for the love of the loaf . What they longed for were the bread-bangles.
Sometime they liked them sweet bread of special make.
The jingling thud of the pader and his musical entry in the morning would wake up the children from
their sleep.
They would run to greet and meet him. They didn't even care to brush their teeth or wash their mouths.
The tiger never brushed their teeth. There was no need of doing any such thing. Hot tea could wash
and clean up everything so nicely, after all.

When a person is trying to come over his grief on his own, he is busy making himself
understand certain things. If then, someone intrudes or disturbs, and his chain of thoughts is
broken, it makes him irritated. Moreover, self-consolation, realization or understanding is more
effective and lasting than when it is done by an external agency or a person. The poet knows it.
So he does not intrude on him.
His offer of money to buy another ball is useless for the boy wants the same ball he is attached

11. In his second year in high school, Ebright's research led to his discovery of an unknown insect
hormone. Indirectly, it led to his new theory on the life of cells. He tried to answer a very simple
question. What is the purpose of the twelve tiny gold spots on a monarch pupa? To prove Ebright
and one other student built a device that showed that the spots were producing a hormone. It was
necessary for the butterfly's full development. This project won Ebright first place in the county

Horace was caught red-handed. The woman in red said that she didn't expect to meet a burglar
there. She added that she knew that it had been a great inconvenience for him to meet her. She
also asked what he was going to do. Horace replied that he was thinking of running away. The
lady threatened that if he did so, she would telephone the police and tell them all about him.
They would get him at once.
The young woman in red was even smarter than Horace Danby. She was a thief and came with
the same purpose as Horace to that house. However, she encountered Horace with an air of
confidence and authority. She didn't allow him to doubt or think about her. She showed that the
dog, Sherry, belonged to her. He told him that she returned 'home' just in time. Her manner of
speaking, gestures and confidence made Horace mistake her to be the lady of the house.
