About Aquatic Animals ( Some Facts )


1. Some giant jellyfish have tentacles that can stretch one-third the length of a football field.
2. The world's smallest seahorse is smaller than a postage stamp.
3. Sea otters stash food between rolls of skin.
4. An octopus can have nearly 2,000 suckers on its arms.
5. Blue whales are the largest animals and have evolved from the hippopotamus. They can swim up to
eight km an hour, but on sensing danger, they can speed up to 48 km an hour. The best part about
blue whales is that they can sleep while swimming with half its brain functioning.
6. Electric eels are one of the 500 fishes that can produce electricity. The skin of the eel protects it from
its electric attack, but if the eel is wounded it could shock itself. The electric shock of an eel is
powerful enough to knock down a horse and can prove dangerous to a human. Some eels produce
enough electricity to light ten bulbs!
7. Jellyfish do not have bones, brain, heart, and head. Some species possess light-sensitive organs and
can glow in the dark.
8. Piranha have extremely sensitive organs that help them detect blood in oceans just like the sharks.
Piranhas are not only omnivorous but also cannibals.
9. Cuttlefish releases ink to escape from shark and large fishes. Cuttlefish was widely used as source of
ink in ancient times.
10. Walrus, being mammals, can easily stay under water for 30 minutes without having to come to the
surface to breathe. They are incredibly protective of one another and would rush to help any
walrus under attack.

About Insects
1. Grasshopper is a plant-eating insect and has ears on its knees. It sings by rubbing its powerful back
legs.
2. Ladybird makes nasty chemicals on its knees. When attacked, it oozes chemicals and hits its
attacker with them.
3. Goliath beetle is the heaviest flying insect, weighing over 100 grams and growing to as much as 13
cm long. It is mainly found in Africa.
4. Housefly has only one pair of proper wings. It flies at over 7 km per hour.
5. Bee makes ten trips a day and visits 1000 flowers on each trip to collect nectar from the flowers. It
then changes the nectar into honey.
6. Queen Alexandra is the biggest butterfly, with 25 cm wide wings. It lives in the forests of New
Guinea.
7. Dragonflies are the fastest flying insects. They are known to travel at the speed of 35 miles an
hour.
8. Ants leave trails and communicate with each other using pheromones as chemical signals.
9. Some insects, such as gerridae (water striders), are able to walk on the surface of water.

10. An Ant has two stomachs. One of their stomachs is for holding food for their own consumption,
and the second one is to hold food to be shared with other ants. This process is known as
trophallaxis.

United Nations
• The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. It is currently made up of 193
Member States.
• The name ‘United Nations’, was coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt who was
the 32nd President of the United States.
• UN headquarters are in New York city. Regional offices are in Geneva, Vienna, and Nairobi.
• Official languages of UN are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.
• The main organs of the UN are

All were established in 1945 when the UN was founded.
• The General Assembly is formed of the 193 Member States of the United Nations. They discuss

security. It has 15 Members, and each Member has one vote.
• The Economic and Social Council works towards development in the fields of – economic, social
and environmental.
• The Trusteeship Council is made up of the five permanent members of the Security Council --
China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States.
• The International Court of Justice is set in The Hague, Netherlands.
• The Secretariat carries out the day to day work of the UN in offices and duty stations around the
world. The head of the United Nations Secretariat is the Secretary-General.
• The current Secretary-General of the UN is Mr. AntónioGuterres of Portugal.
