General Comments

Chapter 6

1.  Discuss how position power, task structure of the group, and leader-

member personal relationships interact to influence the choice of leadership
style. Can generalizations be drawn confidently in this regard? Discuss!

2.  What expectations, interests, and behavior patterns might be said to

characterize newly installed political appointees in formal positions of leadership
in executive agencies? How do many, if not most, appointees interact with the
senior career officials in their respective agencies? With the chief executive who
appointed them? Discuss.

3. What did you think of the two videos on Servant Leadership? How effective
would this type of leadership be in today's government?

I enjoyed watching both videos on Servant Leadership. Being a Servant Leader is not
something that I take lightly or for granted. I am thankful that God granted me a servant
heart to recognize the good in others and help make a difference in their lives and the
occupation that I’m in. I connected with both of these videos and saved them to my list.

4. What did you learn from the article, "How Cities Work?"

Peer responses to DF 2

 Read Ch 10 – 13 in OPP

Individual Assessment Paper (5 – 7 pages):  The nine power tactics used mostly by
individuals toward peers are:  quid pro quo, allocating resources, forming coalitions, co-
opting opposition members, incurring obligation, using a surrogate, controlling the
agenda, brinkmanship, and building a favorable image. Select one tactic and describe in
detail how you used this tactic in a recent power interaction. What was the background
of the situation? Why did you choose this tactic and not another? How did the peer react
to the tactic? Was this tactic successful? If you were in a similar situation today, would
you choose the same tactic or try a different one? Explain your reasonings. Include a
minimum of two scholarly references.
